Y'all best show some respect for the law, boy.

2003-06-13 03:18:20 PM
that same thing has happened here in high point, NC, resulting in many, many cases getting thrown out, and, i believe, money being returned to folks who had paid their fines during a certain period... i think these bozos need to return the money as well- that seems more dishonest than the usual dishonesty we get from our governments...
i've got mixed feelings for those cameras. the fine is a civil one, not criminal (at least here in NC, anyway), and, because of that, a person accused has to prove themself innocent. top that off with rigged cameras such as those mentioned, and something just smells fishy...
i've also read claims that these cameras actually cause more accidents than they prevent, as folks slam on the brakes, causing a rear-end collision...
2 cents tendered, thanks.

They're doing it here. Mostly in the semi-rural areas. Several places we have a nice 4-lane divided road, 55 mph limit and miles between lights. About a year ago they took some of them down to 15 second yellows. Theoretically you have plenty of stopping time. But...everyone runs 60+, some decide to try to make it, some want to stop, and there are skids marks for 100 yards in front of every light.

Revenue is the primary driving factor behind most traffic laws. Speed limits, seat belt laws, red light traffic cameras, various parking laws. Because lord knows the government doesn't steal enough of our money through taxes in the first place.

Studies show that increasing yellow times by a second or two reduces accidents, which I would think would save more money than the tickets produce.

Of course, those studies are always short-term. They don't prove that people don't readjust to longer yellow times and get just as bad again.

"Revenue is the primary driving factor behind most traffic laws."

Damn straight, cause there's no evidence these laws save lives.

BrotherAlpha there isn't any evidence to support that these save lives. They really are revenue generators. It goes along with anti-lock brakes, which haven't given us the dramatic increase in saved lives they were supposed to. In fact, the death rate per mile traveled in the us has been on a slow, steady decline for a long time, even after air bags and ABS were introduced. The common belief is that people don't know how to use ABS, so that when it's activated and the pedal pulses, people let off of the brake pedal, which in turn shuts the ABS off. Also, a lot of the time when people are trying to avoid an accident, they nail the brakes, but there's nowhere to swerve to (the benefit of ABS isn't shorter braking times, it's the ability to steer while braking).

I like the idea of shaving time. Weird, man. Wild. Outtasight!

2003-06-13 07:55:27 PM
Don't forget that at a lot of these places accidents from collisions in the intersections have gone down but rear-end collisions (from people panic braking to avoid a ticket) have greatly increased.

2003-06-13 07:56:42 PM
arseholes.

2003-06-13 08:01:13 PM
Bin_jammin anti-lock brakes are also good for limited traction situations, such as ice. At least for most people. Unless you spend a lot of time driving on ice most people won't pump their brakes properly.

Awful. Can you say "Class Action Lawsuit?"

Hey, anyone care to to refute/back this up?

I've heard verbally from people on several occasions that lights with cameras have rear-end collisions increase exponentially, especially on rainy days.

Also, cops...have you any experience with the observation that people cause accidents when they see cops because they automatically panic and slow down and people don't see it?

I find myself almost slamming into some moron who is going the speed limit, sees a cop, then slams on the brakes automatically...

2003-06-13 08:18:05 PM
AWWwWWWww KRAP. Hytes is here. It is kinda spooky to know that he somewhere in this town. Ask him how he feels about putting in cameras and the answe very interesting.

2003-06-13 08:18:28 PM
Legally, you're stupposed to start stopping when you see the yellow light, and not enter tne intersection unless it is not possible for you to stop safely before entering the intersection.

2003-06-13 08:19:29 PM
"I find myself almost slamming into some moron who is going the speed limit, sees a cop, then slams on the brakes automatically..."

That would be called an assured clear distance violation on your part if you did hit him.

2003-06-13 08:20:01 PM
CommanderApaul legally you're supposed to signal, too.

*warms up the EMP device for people who don't signal*

2003-06-13 08:21:55 PM
Which is why we can pull people over for not using their turn signals.

Your point behind that comment being what, exactly?

2003-06-13 08:23:11 PM
CommanderApaul mainly that I hate people who don't signal.

But I know people who've been pulled over for going through an intersection on yellow when they could have stopped also. Neither recieved a ticket, but they were pulled over.

2003-06-13 08:23:59 PM
And also that there are a lot of things people are supposed to do while driving that 90% of drivers ignore, such as yellow lights, turn signals, proper following distance, etc.

2003-06-13 08:24:49 PM
Ok, sorry. Bad day at work, little on the defensive. :0)

This winter I got my first speeding ticket (on the interstate, speed went from 70 down to 55 about 15 miles out of town and I was clocked at 68 just a ways past the sign). I contested it because the stupid officer had written the ticket out for 23 mph over the limit, making it a $162 ticket.

Anyway, talking to the other people contesting their tickets that day was pretty ridiculous. Half the people were there because their window tint had supposedly been too dark. One of them had even had a police officer friend approve her tint just a while before she got the ticket. Another guy had an officer say the exhaust on his motorcycle wasn't legal because it was too loud, but it had been tested and passed as ok.

2003-06-13 08:41:18 PM
If you are doing the speed limit and a light turns yellow then you are supposed to stop if you will safely be able to. If not, then you can keep going. If the speed limit is, say 40, then you would need probably 5 seconds to safely stop. It takes at least one second for your foot to hit the brake pedal. At 40 mph you travel about 44 feet during that one second. The law doesn't say that you can't still be in the intersection when the light turns red.

Amen and amen. I am changing lanes, deal.

What the hell is a "blicker?"

There are few really short yellows round here, one of which is so short that it is almost non-existent... well... I never remember about it until afterwards and driving becomes a lot less enjoyable for a few moments.

As for directionals, I like them. It is nice to signal before changing lanes. I can't stand folks (mostly blokes) who change lanes and then slow down after cutting me off. It pisses me off.

/the man is always trying to put me down.

The best people are the ones who are in the left turning lane, and when the light turns green, they realize they don't really want to turn, so they just step on it and jump in front of you. Great people, those.

While that is pretty bad, I cannot believe how many times I have seen in the last few months, people who turn right from the left or center lane, and people who turn left from the middle or right lane.

People are getting exponentially suicidal and homicidal.

If this sounds like you, please do us all a favor and kill yourself. Today.

Agreed. And people who don't have working lights should have their car towed away. About a year ago I was driving at night and the car in front of me had only one backlight and no break lights, so I couldn't see him at all, only this single red dot and only one light makes it hard to judge the distance. Anyhow, he braked really quickly because the car in front of him turned. I almost rearended him because I couldn't see him. Really, it is his fault for not having the proper lights, but if I had run into him, it would have been my fault since I rearended him and I wouldn't be able to prove that his lights weren't working since I would have smashed them. I was so pissed

I also hate the people who are in the left lane (not turning lane) then realize they want to turn on a green light and do so without getting into the turning lane. Geeze, there are so many stupid drivers.

Sometimes I want to become a cop just so I can punish these stupid people. I don't mind people who speed (as long as they're driving safely). But I hate it when drivers pull stupid stunts like not using signals, running stop signs, etc.

2003-06-13 09:53:53 PM
whoops, Garanimal beat me to ranting about stupid left turn makers

If this sounds like you, please do us all a favor and kill yourself. Today.

Sad thing is, people like that are probably going to kill us good drivers. It like stupid drunk drivers who kill some innocent person and live.

We all need to have a mutal respect for eachother while driving(elsewhere as well, but I'll not get into that)...for the sake of safety and the refusal of taking part in the general decline in civility. By using my turn signals, I let other people know what I'm doing...even if simply out of courtesy.

I try to stay coolheaded, I have enough things to stress about in my life, why allow my daily commute to add to the burden? It's not easy though...people really irk me sometimes...San Diego traffic sucks...

If that's even true, it would just be stupid. If you watch any light that has any traffic at all, someone runs it every couple of minutes or so. There is no need to screw with the system.

2003-06-14 12:49:55 AM
People who use their blinker as an announcement should be pummeled. A request is exactly what it is for. If there is not quite enough room to get into a lane, put on your blinker and wait until there is room. Only asshats sort of force their way in and then use their signal at the last moment before they make their move.
Even worse are those who make turns and hit the signal as they turn the wheel. Why bother.

2003-06-14 01:00:43 AM
I was pulled over by an arsehole cop last year because I went through a yellow light. Not red. Yellow.

I was going south. He was headed east, and wanted to turn left to go south. He pulled me over, but couldn't give me a ticket because I hadn't broken the law.

He still insisted on yelling at me anyway. If he'd hit me, he would have been at fault.

Farking cop.

Rather than tick off the cop and see what kind of trouble he could make for me, I wussed out and apologized. These cops around here can be pricks. Some can be great, but this guy was a prick.

how about the people that go to make a left, but pull further right prior to doing so and vice-versa?

they must see something they have to pull around...

I think it's a law. And some people link to be courteous when they be driving their automobile.

Eh, I've accepted the fact that most drivers are asshats, plain and simple. I've come to terms with the fact that some inner instinct to be dominant comes out when people sit behind the wheel of a car. But if you want to talk about a complete lack of respect for other people (and their property), lets talk about the asshats that squeeze their '71 lincoln coupe into a parking spot big enough for a ford fiesta and then open the door with zero regard for the car next to them. It's these ass hats that usually put me into the kind of mood where I just want to kill someone for cutting me off. Once the car stops, what possible excuse can you have for putting a nice ding in the side of someone elses car?

Next time you drive by the mall in the middle of July and see that really nice car parked out in the middle of the parking lot that only fills up at Christmas, just know it's probably my car trying to avoid the jackasses.

I say we have Senior Citizens get an annual driving test... I know that the AARP is too strong to allow that to happen, But I'd rather be driving on a road full of 14 year olds (Hey! they actually have reflexes!) than some 90 year old granny, who can't see over the dashboard, cruising along at 30mph on a freeway. That crap is more dangerous than speeding!

What he was getting at is people who signal as they turn. The law is to signal 100 feet before a lane change/turn. If your hitting the signal as you turn the wheel, you are neither courteous nor following the law.
