I got a hotel in Brockton once while visiting Boston.

It's pretty run down.

Jimmy's Donuts was awesome

Hard to think of a 49-0 Heavyweight champ being underrated, but I think he is. Not saying he was one of the top 5 heavys of all time (per era), but maybe top 10. He really did throw hard.

I do, however, think that he wouldn't last very long against the likes of the Klitschkos or Lennox Lewis's of the world.

Oh, there they go. There they go, every time I start talkin 'bout boxing, a white man got to pull Rocky Marciano out their ass. That's their one, that's their one. Rocky Marciano. Rocky Marciano. Let me tell you something once and for all. Rocky Marciano was good, but compared to Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano ain't shiat.

Joe Lewis was 137 years old.

Good lord...look at some of those haymaker uppercuts that guy threw.

He might not be fast by today's standards, but look at how hard he hit. I doubt he ever aimed for an opponent's face - more likely he was aiming at the back of the guy's skull through his face.

Hagler-Hearns is still my favorite fight of all time. Short, sweet, and action-packed.

Louis wasn't all THAT old (37), but he was certainly pretty beat by then. Tends to happen after 27 championship fights. Marciano was a great fighter but it's intellectually bankrupt to suggest the Joe Louis he fought was THE Joe Louis... and Marciano would tell you as much himself. It was Louis's last fight after having already retired two years earlier. He came back only because of IRS tax troubles that left him broke. Marciano - to his credit, knew Louis was out of shape and past his prime and participated reluctantly.

He took out many of those guys with one shot. Louis stood there and took a series of them. Imagine you or I withstanding any of that for a second.

Seems weird now to see a "Heavyweight" who doesn't look like much over 180 pounds.

I'm from Brockton. Used to work the beer stands at the fair. Was definitely entertaining.

If you meet his nephews they are built like him, stocky as all hell.

If he connected cleanly with that uppercut at :35, he would have killed the guy.

Yeah, he's a slow-handed 175-pounder by today's standards.

And Joe Louis was his hero. He cried and apologized after beating him.

I came here to say something like this. They were all slower back then. Slower to punch, slower to dodge... but holy crap did he land some wicked weight on those punches.

Back then 37 was pretty damned old to be boxing. Add to the fact that the man boxed for a living without the benefit of today's medical, training and nutritional advances, he would have been in pretty rough shape.

I always thought it was interesting watching Marciano's crouching style. A lot of people just kind of class him as a slugger who would eat what you could give to give you one of his, but if you watch a lot of his fights, he's actually pretty hard to get a clean hit on. Because of the way he crouches, his shoulder makes it hard to get a clean shot off at his face without positioning yourself where you're open to a retaliation. He was not fast but was deceptively hard to hit. Most of the shots that I've seen Marciano take were ones that coincided with him readying a big right. He didn't eat a bunch of shots to get in close like most people seem to assume.
