I really wasn't planning on making any comment on the new version of Digg, but enough people have asked me about it so here it is. As it so happens, botched site relaunches are something I know a thing or two about.

Back when we were doing Fark TV, someone emailed in a complaint that I've never forgotten. They said they didn't like the show because it was a sketch comedy show that had the name Fark stamped on top. There wasn't really anything Fark about it. You can't just stick the Fark name in there and expect the Fark community to just adopt it as their own, they said. Whoever sent that in was right.

Digg just made the same mistake. They just scrapped their existing site, replaced it with a new one, and told everyone it was Digg. That's what everyone's angry about: it's not Digg, and they really resent being repeatedly told that it is.

As for the actual Diggv4 site concept, I have no idea if it's genius or stupid. I can't tell, maybe it's the next Twitter, maybe it's the next MySpace. Time will tell.

IXI Jim IXI: Xanthobilly: All of the submitted links are syndicated highly polished webpages such as engadget, national geographic, mashable, etc.

As opposed to here, where there are routinely links to some random guy's blog, as long as he pushes the PITA in the right direction...

Maybe it's nostalgia, but at least there's amateur pizazz here at Fark. It reminds me of Dunder Mifflin Infinity. "Two-Point-Oooh!" The success of Facebook doesn't mean everything should become a Facebook knockoff.

Digg4 is simply a web page with links to reddit.

2010-08-31 03:01:39 PM
I visited Digg daily before the V4 switchover. Now I'm trying to fit in on Reddit, but it just doesn't feel right. I've been a Farker for a decent amount of time, but for some reason I seem to need another social news site to visit. I started on Slashdot, until I couldn't put up with the smugness. I wandered over to Digg when it launched and enjoyed the decent variety of content. The users are definitely a little more rough around the edges (like /b/ on Adderall) than users on other sites, but they provide enjoyable "discussions" from time to time. It's also nice to be able to watch your comments and continue conversing well after the thread drops from the front page. Then V4 dropped like a hot turd in a cold bowl and I fled to Reddit with many others. The news is decent, but it's mostly self-inflating bullshiat and half of the comments are about how they're so much smarter than Diggers. I know they're mostly joking, but it's a bit off-putting.

Thankfully Fark has been the one true constant over the years and I can always rely on you guys for lulz and intelligent convo (and trolling).

Kravis Fupnobble: I went to look at this so-called "Digg" page, and all I got was this...

That's probably the best thing ever posted on Digg.

Silenced is foo: ColSanders: Call me stupid, but other than the layout what is different with digg? The submission and/or rating system? Are people upset because their little group of digghounds can't force their stories to the top every time?

I liked Digg when it first started but it quickly devolved into a link of top 10 lists and cat pictures.

They've completely changed up the voting system and made it into more of a personal news-aggregator site. Basically, you pick which news sources to follow and their diggs and submissions are now your main page.

Also, they've gutted out numerous features, like being able to quickly see responses to your own coversations, bury articles as spam, etc.

Basically, where Digg used to be just a user-driven news site like Reddit or Fark-with-voting, now it's a completely new Facebookish concept.

So now it looks like I'm going through Google Reader to access a Dig RSS feed that is essentially linking to three hour old Reddit articles?

This thing just got entirely too meta.

I was chosen to be a FarkTV writer about one week before it was "canceled".

Sorry folks. I was going to make it funny, but it didn't work out.

ColSanders: Silenced is foo: Basically, where Digg used to be just a user-driven news site like Reddit or Fark-with-voting, now it's a completely new Facebookish concept.

So you choose the content instead of having a small group of power-users pick the content? How is that a bad thing?

Simple, the default follow-set of people available to follow are all corporations that are publishing their own stuff. They set you up to follow HuffPo, Engagdget, etc. So unless you go and seek out MrBabyMan, you're stuck with the listing of a bunch of magazines. It's basically an RSS aggregator with comments.

Because of that, corporate content has utterly taken over the main-page of the site instead of user-driven content.

As annoying as the power-users were, they had good taste. Now they've been replaced with corporate feeds.

That is the same thing that happened to the Audi World forums and everyone left and joined the new one.

Came in to echo the Facebook comparison...in fact, I thought I had clicked the wrong bookmark at first. the new digg is way too similar to facebook.

People still go to Digg?

Oh look, the site's broken. LOL

2010-08-31 04:25:01 PM
FARK's redesign was not as big of a deal as people made it out to be. Sure it looks different, and the layout was tweaked for ads, but the basic layout of the home page and the threads is pretty much the same.

I never understood digg anyway. It was impossible to track conversations because they were all over the place thanks to the digging system.

I don't get what the difference between the new and old diggs are. Is the new one less based around vote-spamming up comments you like and down comments you don't like to destroy coherent conversation?

Barakku: I don't get what the difference between the new and old diggs are. Is the new one less based around vote-spamming up comments you like and down comments you don't like to destroy coherent conversation?

I don't know. Evidently people are upset that content creators can submit their own content. You know, normally it had to get submitted by one user, then voted up by 200 other users to make their front page. Now it only has to get voted up by 199 users, and that's a tragedy.

Really people just wanted to be attention whores by being the first to submit something to digg.

Most, if not all, top Digg stories were from something like fifty users. So really, the place was run by a small cabal of users.

I don't know anything about that - I never submitted stories and didn't really know how they got on to the front page. All I know is I liked the old Digg and I don't like the new one. Not sure how much of that is due to users spamming Reddit links, but I don't really like the re-design much.
Unfortunately I don't like Reddit's design either, so I'm betwixt rock and hard place at the moment.

Shazam999: Most, if not all, top Digg stories were from something like fifty users. So really, the place was run by a small cabal of users.

What nobody wants to admit is that MrBabyMan et al actually submitted good stuff. Replacing them with corporate feeds is not an improvement.

Ultimately, scrape away the ego and all that, and most Digg users go to Digg to see a front-page full of interesting news and good user commentary. Same as Fark. Only a small number of vocal users care where the news comes from.

And right now, that front page sucks. In fact, it's pushed off to the side, and instead defaults you to show a page of stuff you're following. And that stuff you're following is even worse, because unless you've gone hardcore and tracked down all the best contributors, it's full of the corporate stuff they suggested you follow when you signed up.

Oh and might as well discuss the headlines a bit in this headline of the week thread. The recession-proof, inflation-friendly headline wins my vote :)

Oh yeah, that was just one whine that I didn't get. I thought it was stupid that they tried to emphasize stories from your "friends". I have like 3 friends on there for no real reason, so it's not such a useful feature for me. I just like to look at funny pictures of cats and make sarcastic comments that get misunderstood by people with no sense of humor. All that will still be there once all the real content stops being drowned out by whiners.

Barakku: I don't get what the difference between the new and old diggs are. Is the new one less based around vote-spamming up comments you like and down comments you don't like to destroy coherent conversation?

For a certain time, Mashable spammed Digg v4's front page. I never once submitted stories and I didn't care about the power-users. That was the beauty of Digg, the exposure of minor but thoughtful web contents for the connected people who cared. Yeah, yeah, I used to use Digg very passionately. Most of the Digg users hate to see non-mainstream contents being rejected and that's all right now.

There is but one thing emblazoned into my mind about FarkTV. If I'm in a goofy enough (read: sleep-deprived) mood, I always end up saying "Pepperoni!" like the girl in the porn sketch.

I can't even use the digg iphone app anymore. Can't log in via my facebook account. These are 2 features I use just to login that don't even work anymore. I went to reddit for the first time this week and checked it out and it seems like a better place to go for the time being.

After I couldn't get the new digg page to work right for me 3 days in a row, I found a thread where there was tons of digg bashing and they mentioned reddit. I had heard about it over the years, but never bothered with it. well I went over there. HOLY CRAP. Its 1000x better than digg ever was. You get to swear, you get to talk about adult themes. Unless I hear about some fantastic changes to digg again, I'll probably never go back.

Fark and reddit biatches ftw ;)
