I wish they had specified which course he was trying to attend. If it was something that was mostly classroom with some light field work, then yeah, that's kind of a dick move, but not entirely unreasonable. If it was something like the Warrior Leaders Course (an enlisted leadership course) it requires a physical fitness test as soon as you begin the course to stay enrolled, and another PT test at the end to graduate.

If it was something like Ranger, Reconnaissance & Surveillance Leaders Course, Air Assault, etc. then yeah, I can see why. There is no way in hell anyone is going to be physically fit enough to pass those courses if they're just barely making the minimum fitness standards.

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Holy Jesus! What is that? What the fark is that? WHAT IS THAT, PRIVATE PYLE?
Private Gomer Pyle: Sir, a jelly doughnut, sir!
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: A jelly doughnut?
Private Gomer Pyle: Sir, yes, sir!
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: How did it get here?
Private Gomer Pyle: Sir, I took it from the mess hall, sir!
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Is chow allowed in the barracks, Private Pyle?
Private Gomer Pyle: Sir, no, sir!
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Are you allowed to eat jelly doughnuts, Private Pyle?
Private Gomer Pyle: Sir, no, sir!
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: And why not, Private Pyle?
Private Gomer Pyle: Sir, because I'm too heavy, sir!
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Because you are a disgusting fat body, Private Pyle!
Private Gomer Pyle: Sir, yes, sir!
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Then why did you try to sneak a jelly doughnut in your footlocker, Private Pyle?
Private Gomer Pyle: Sir, because I was hungry, sir!
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Because you were hungry...
[turns and addresses rest of platoon]
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Private Pyle has dishonored himself and dishonored the platoon. I have tried to help him. But I have failed. I have failed because YOU have not helped me. YOU people, have not given Private Pyle the proper motivation! So, from now on, whenever Private Pyle farks up, I will not punish him! I will punish all of YOU! And the way I see it ladies, you owe me for ONE JELLY DOUGHNUT! NOW, GET DOWN ON YOUR FACES!
[rest of recruits get in front-leaning-rest position, Hartman turns to Pyle]
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Open your mouth!
[shoves jelly doughnut into PYLE's mouth]
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: They're payin' for it; YOU eat it! Ready! Exercise!

HA!

When you hear gunshots, you have three options:
Drop, Cover or Run

THEN you assess the situation - This prevents friendly fire and allows more correct target assessments.

was there a tight deadline for the course? I am thinking he didn't want to exercise...If he was meeting the minimum already wouldn't a few weeks of a good diet and exercise put him in the zone?

And you don't know much. I used to work with cadets back in the day, if you sent them to a training class with a physical standard that they just barely met right before departure, it was pretty likely that they would wash out and be sent back. Yes, it's the standard, but you don't want to set someone up to fail. We had it happen a bunch of times before we changed our practice to require everyone to exceed the standards by 10%. The next summer we didn't have anyone wash out on day 1 due to body weight/inability to pass PT test. Yes, it seemed mean, but trust me, it's a lot better than putting them through the process of washing out. That's a LOT more embarrassing and mentally crushing.

There is nothing worse for a commander than having troops fail PT or not make weight on the first day of a school. The guy must have been way out of shape if he had to starve himself down to standard.

2010-08-31 06:51:22 AM
I'm sure he was in bad shape, but that's no excuse for shooting his supervisor. People cut weight all the time without going nuts.

If he was known for fluxuating weight and was getting his weight down with "saunas" and "wraps" some extra loss probably wasn't a bad thing.

2010-08-31 07:05:02 AM
I hope they put him on the firing squad quick weight loss plan now.

Sounds like he should have been running more and laying in a sauna less.

2010-08-31 07:15:04 AM
Somehow, I have a feeling that nobody told him to starve himself. Too lazy to do cardio, too dumb to eat right.

Despite all the "Hoah" crap info floating around, not ALL military members are really "warriors". In this example, with no other info provided except that the low ranking murderer had oft gotten away with showing up late to work and it seems his duties involved sitting indoors staring at a computer screen, I'm going to guess he, and therefore his superiors (including the runing away female MSG), are not in a combat career field, but some kind of admin unit.

/Admin folks are nessasary, but trying to compare their actions to combat teams is just silly.

Example:

www.army.mil

2010-08-31 07:55:30 AM
He said his client spent weeks trying body wraps and sauna treatments and starving himself to meet the standards.

"He showed some form of diminished capacity, some sort of delirium in the days and hours leading up to this incident,"

The diminished capacity defense explains why a military member would try saunas and body wraps to lose weight instead of eating good food and going to the gym. You mean to tell me this guy knows NOBODY in good shape with regular PT habits?

And they are ARMY, not marines.

Eh...the BMI system is extremely flawed as it fails to take in to account folks who spend some time in the gym putting on good weight. I'm willing to bet that you know at least one soldier who regularly busts tape but still knocks out 300's on the APFT.

That being said, the guy doesn't exactly look like a PT stud.

His problem is that he wasn't eating anything, I just recently dropped 15 pounds in a week so I could pass weight and join the Army.

Eat about 500 calories of soup a day, lots of water, then work out and burn 1800-2400 calories a day. Take some laxatives to clean out your system and you are golden. But he is probably different, I was a disgusting fatbody and needed to loose weight.

What sort of ate up military unit was he in where they allowed him to regularly show up late for work?

I mean, in the four years I was in the army, I missed PT formation only once, and PT formation is an hour and a half before the work day starts. And I wasn't even in a combat role, rather a combat support role doing commo (maintaining radios and such).

I guess this goes to show what a joke the army reserve is, if he was in the regular army he would probably be looking at getting discharged for his conduct for failure to adapt even before he thought about pulling a gun on anyone. I just don't understand why they were even considering sending him to any school.

2010-08-31 08:35:56 AM
The Army will not send a FAT-BODY into combat. They wanted to deploy this guy to Afghanistan. He knew that as long as he stayed fat he would not go. They continued to try and make the guy lose weight. Now, his lawyer is trying to blame the shooting on his diet.

2010-08-31 08:42:09 AM

2010-08-31 08:49:18 AM
His problem was he's a dirtbag. He's a murderer and they've concocted up a crappy sob story for his defense. Life without parole, off to leavenworth, he'll have plenty of time to get in shape in prison. Or put on extra pounds in case his prison hubby likes them big.

It's horribly flawed in both directions. According to my BMI when I graduated bootcamp lean and ripped, I was "underweight". To the point I was warned about it. Peak of health and I was being told I better gain weight by my next PT or be referred to medical for anorexia.
