I've always given Pitchfork a slight (very) benefit of the doubt for any of their opinions on music from the 2000's, because there really isn't the stand-out mega-superstar model any more.

But go look at their top albums from the 1970's. Ugh. No comment.

I am guessing it reads like this:

1. Nirvana song
2. Nirvana song
3. Nirvana song

etc etc etc

It's got Motownphilly by Boyz II Men on it.

//Boyz II Men, ABC, BBD
//The East Coast family

This guess is based on your familiarity with Pitchfork, I bet.

Glad to see Refused get in the top 200. I think they have some of the best albums of the 90's so it is good to see them on the list.

Nice to see Digable Planets on the list (and surprisingly not "Rebirth of Slick").

Goddamnit, "Flagpole Sitta" is nowhere near Harvey Danger's best song. Such a criminally underrated band.
/Thumbs up for including "Virginia Reel Around the Fountain," though

"Hipster" has replaced "emo" as the word unoriginal cretins use to bash anybody who likes any sort of popular music that doesn't involve long haired white men with Les Pauls and 100 watt stacks. It's beyond worn-out.

And it is especially popular to bash online music review sites that one has identified as "hipster" and yet, has never read.

/Not sticking up for Pitchfork's occasionally overly-pedantic and intellectualized critics, but they're not as hipster as people on these threads make them out to be, nor do they only promote obscure bands

Well if Les Pauls and 100 watt stacks would stop being so awesome, I'd find time to listen to other kinds of music.

Seems like any half-decent list so far; some known ones, some curveballs. Can't complain. Hopefully someone will post a link when it's all done, since I'll probably forget to check later.

I was thinking of all the '90s bands that I like that I figured wouldn't get mentioned on the list, and the Boo Radleys were one of them. Then, whaddaya know, there they are at 174.

/They remain the loudest band I've ever seen
//No, I never saw My Bloody Valentine

Besides Faith No More's Epic, I can't think of a more played out song than Flagpole Sitta by Harvey Danger. I'm so tired of that song I can't turn my radio dial fast enough when that song comes on...which is at least once a day.

/I know get satellite or pandora.

Mrs. Tantrum can't stand that song either. I never understood why. I always thought it was a light, quirky tune. Of course, I don't listen to the radio much. Maybe I gave it a pass since the lead singer was the lead film critic in a local rag and I agreed with him 100% on nearly every review I ever read by him. It's hard to put down someone's art who has the exact same taste as you in another artistic medium.

That's probably because it's not too hard, and not too soft.

Black Box: You know how it goes: house fiends employ supermodel girl as the lip-syncing face for their new band; said boys also recruit American plus-sized girl (disco diva Martha Wash) to record uncredited vocal tracks for said band under false pretenses; boys realize international pop-crossover success with tunes featuring those vocals; girl successfully sues boys and boys' record label for due recognition and compensation.

Wait; I thought that was C+C Music Factory.

outside of a few tracks, I really can't imagine Mogwai being very loud, though I've heard they are. MBV was basically sustained noise for 75 minutes. It was great.

I bet Only Shallow makes the top 10.

183. Mercury Rev "Holes"

175. Stone Temple Pilots "Interstate Love Song"
174. The Boo Radleys "Lazarus"
172. Gang Starr "Mass Appeal"
171. Black Box "Everybody Everybody"

168. Alice in Chains "Would?"

With my Boo Radleys show, I think it was partly because they were deliberately loud and noisy to begin with and partly because I swear they were in a small American club with all the amps they'd use at outdoor festivals in England. It was ungodly loud. It was great, mind you, but it was also preposterous. If you went anywhere near the stage, the amps provided a weird breeze, and you could almost see the smoke in the air vibrating. And when the trumpets(!!) would get going on top of the wall of guitar distortion, sensible people would flee. Not me, though. I wish I had a link to their version of Love's "Alone Again Or"...it gives the best hint of what they were capable of.

Thinking about the dynamics/loudness on the recorded version of "Leaves and Sand" makes me think they probably did really want it that loud.

Never got to see them. Would love to have.

I wanna here some guesses for the top song

my guess is Pavement summer babe, that or trigger cut they usually put pavement near the top.

2010-08-31 01:45:31 AM
"Summer Babe" would have been a good guess before big Pitchfork show this summer. I suspect that the love won't be there any longer. What will it be, though? I suspect that it won't be a hiphop/R&B entry, but if it is, I'll bet it's Public Enemy's "Welcome to the Terrordome". I have plenty of choices for what number one should be, but I know they'll never even make the list. Songs like the Feelies' "Time For a Witness" and the Chills' "Oncoming Day" just aren't going to happen. Nothing like Freakwater's "Crazy Man" or the Scud Mountain Boys' "Freight of Fire" don't stand a chance, either. I'll have to think more about what might win.
