I'm convinced that anyone who compares Arcade Fire to Bruce Springsteen beyond Win's vocal stylings on some of the songs on Neon Bible have never actually listened to Bruce Springsteen.

that was absolutely worth downloading chrome for.

The video will only work if you've got a strong Internet connection, and it doesn't play on Firefox. To watch it, you'll need a compatible browser (it's designed for Google Chrome, but Safari works too), and there's at least a decent chance you'll get a crash or two while you watch.

We're so hip, we made a video that's almost impossible to watch, even if you wanted to!

I don't understand the hype for Arcade Fire. I have their first record and have heard this latest one.

One would think the assemblage of seven musicians would produce a fuller sound instead of the ethereal crap they make. It's just not...good. Sort of Meh.

the video is a series of windows that pop up in a coordinated fashion. i'm sure it was a biatch to program and probably not worth doing in other browsers. also it pulls a bunch of views from google maps, which is probably easier to do in chrome. anyway, it was worth the extra download, imho.

You know, up until about 5 minutes ago I had no interest at all in Arcade Fire. That was f*cking cool.

They're way better live than on CD.

Seriously. I only think they're a little above "meh" in the recording studio myself.

That was cool, even though it was kind of a pain if your primary browser isn't Chrome and you come from a podunk little town without enough streetview.

If I can get free tickets sometime, sure. I saw them on Palladia and I think on Colbert. Not impressed.

They are different than most garbage out there, and for that deserve props though. I just haven't figured them out, inasmuch as I know people who farking worship this band. It's probably just me.

No, you're not alone. I've heard them name-dropped all over the radio recently and saw them on Colbert or TDS the other night. Like you I was not impressed, especially given the hype they've been receiving.

I'm willing to admit I'm just not "into it" so I don't care that much, but I wish people could go into more detail about why they're so worshiped and what makes them unique.

Worked relatively well in FF3.6 on my 3 year old Lappy.

Although that hill looked much steeper when I was coming home from school* than it did on Streetview.

Add me to that list. The singer's voice annoys me to no end and I think his singing usually doesn't go with the song. Although I freely admit that I only know two or three of their songs (the ones that get radio airplay on the classic rock station around here).

Sometimes when I see a link about a TV show or movie or band or sport that I find uninteresting, I stop by to let everyone know.

well, for one "Funeral" listened to in its entirety is amazing.

couple that with how amazing they are live (with an actual crowd that you are a part of, not on a damn talk show).

finally, they actually care about music, and creating an "album" that goes together, not just a single. their passion onstage is unmistakable and never just going through the motions. it's an experience.

if you just like singles or something you can get high to and say "wow that guitarist is amazing" then yeah, not for you. if you like a full sound with engaging lyrics, then give em a second shot.

i would post youtube links, but meh. i'll let anyone else pick that up.

I like Arcade Fire enough to buy their music. They had a neat "video" for Neon Bible that was similar to the Street View thing in TFA that got me hooked on their music..

Link (new window)

Also, I swore I'd never listen to "Wake Up" again after it was played about a jillion times during the Super Bowl and the Where the Wild Things Are trailers, but I listened to that album not long ago and found myself singing along with it anyway. Dammit.

I've asked the same thing and all I ever receive in response is something about how their sound is just like, you know, unique and different. Not to generalize, but among my friends, most of the people who worship bands in this way can never explain in detail why they like them without overusing broad adjectives. I think it's just that they enjoy feeling like they discovered a particular band 'first' in our group. If the band does end up getting any substantial amount of mainstream exposure, they lose interest. But I digress...the video was very cool.

They should release this as a music video. It might make it big.

Arcade Fire deserves a #1 hit.

You can be all MEH about them. But they are 100 times better than any band that has ever had a #1 hit. Period.

i guess they're going to have to settle for being nothing while selling out MSG, the Greek, and every other venue they play, and even having Terry Gilliam direct and webcast one of their shows?

Crappy JavaScript speed. Might work better in the 4.0 beta, but it's pretty slow on 3.6.8. Tried in Safari, too. Didn't get the warning message, but it was using as much CPU power as I could throw at it before I got bored and closed the browser.

Personally, I'm looking for things like their use of sounds, instrument choices, if those instruments are played by members of the band or are just pre-recorded, arrangements, whether there is just one singer on most of the tracks or if other members sing and how they harmonize and blend, if they sample, how long their songs are, whether or not songs run together on the album, the overall themes of the album(s) and if they differ and evolve, who helped produce the album and master it, etc.

I guess for me, if somebody is telling me about a great band that I should listen to, I'd rather hear things like, "So-and-so produced this album and he also produced albums for band X, so you might like the style" rather than hear, "They're like a trip-hop, prog rock, grindcore folk band with a little bit of jazz and world influences. It's just so clear that they love what they do."

what if they don't like the band because of who produced it and the other technical reasons you listed? what if it's as simple as "they're just really f*cking good to me, you should check them out" ... you have unreasonable expectations for the way people should decide they like music. have you ever liked music just because you listened to it and enjoyed it? or did you need to technically deconstruct it all first to make sure it passed your various tests?
