Ron T Davenport: I like how he threatens the kid shooting the video then whines that you didn't get to see the end of the encounter where he and the kid supposedly shake hands.

By the way: I slapped around Officer Nozzle's mom, but I kissed her after.

Yeah I'm sure after his cigarette he went back out of Youtube fear and offered the kid his cummy hand. Sick. Deny him his pension? You bet, and I'd like to see him do prison time as well for abusing publicly granted authority on a normal teenager.

I work hard, abuse no one, and I don't get no damn pension. Fark that noise.

jnoel:

The officer just taught this kid a life lesson.

Denying a Baltimore police officer powertripping douche of 19 years a pension is bullshiat awesome.

Good lesson. I agree. The ubiquity of cameras will only make this more common. Thus many PDs trying desperately to make it illegal to film in public. Pity that would cast a net too wide for them to support making it happen.

They can try, but it's a really tough one, since they have dashcams and can only "lose" so many recordings that make them look bad.

Mykeru: Walter's Vietnam References: it is always better to shut up and comply, then seek legal recourse later. My parents taught me don't talk back to ANYONE with a gun, but as you could hear in this video, the kid said he doesn't have a dad.

I didn't see the kid "talking back". He's a douchey kid. He said first that he didn't hear the cop (although yeah, he probably knew full well skateboarding wasn't permitted there) and corrected the cop after the cop made a comment about not being his father.

The problem with the cop is that it's obvious that nothing was going to stop him escalating: If the kid answers, that's "talking back", if he stays silent, that's a vacuum for the cop to rant in getting angrier and angrier.

I've been in the same "escalate regardless" situations with cops and they are difficult to navigate even as an adult. You're pretty helpless to stop the cop from going off, which is the essence of being bullied.

Someone in a completely lop-sided power relationship like that that still can't keep it together has no right being a cop.

And now he isn't. Mission accomplished.

Honestly, this is the first good story about a douchy abusive cop getting what he deserves that I've heard in, what, months? It's disgusting.

US citizens are honestly terrified of cops (well, the ones that aren't badge-lickers, obviously), and the abuse of power has gotten way out of hand. I'm glad to see SOMEONE in "Baltimore's Finest" is doing his job by firing this douchebag, but it's only one step on the path to fixing this power-grab.

I totally agree. This kid wasn't even acting out very much like a lot of farkers in this thread seem to think. From the cops reaction you would think he was swearing and acting violently.

Unfortunately, "talking back" is in the eyes of the man with the gun, not the kid with the board. And for most police that I have met, "talking back" is saying anything but yes sir, and no sir, and I will suck your dick sir.

I've met plenty of cops and never had a problem. Sure there's plenty of douches who take on that profession to boss around others but so what. Don't break the law and speak politely when dealing with cops. Only people I hear complaining about cops are those who break the law and/or are generally disrespectful to authority. First off, the kid was lipping off to police after doing wrong.
Stupid kid.

Secondly, thats not a headlock.
Thats the officer gently taking the kid down after he refused to give up his skateboard.

I also like that, even if it were true, a hand-shake is supposed to make some kind of difference. So you accosted a child, took his property, detained him, indirectly threatened him an-- oh, you shook hands? Well, case dismissed!

After I was done assaulting Mr. Wilcox with a pipe, I threatened to continue turning his kneecaps into gravel until he shook my hand! I even made him tell me there were no hard feelings!

Shut the fark up, badgelicker. You've obviously got your blinders on. Or did the chick in the video somehow deserve to get beaten around by a drunken cop?

Go on, defend people "having a problem" with that and the fact that he got probation when your average joe would be in jail. Should be amusing.

Happily, in this case it was in the eyes of his boss watching YouTube.

Which is why, of course, why most cops treat photographing them as a criminal activity regardless of what laws are on the books.

viperdriver: Just out of interest, why do you equate the two? I see this all the time on Fark.
The police are civilians surely?

In most realistic reckonings, police are usually counted as a paramilitary outfit. They sacrifice certain rights in exchange for limited privileges and blah blah blah.

But no, essentially, the police are not civilians. It's why Canada, for example, created the Canadian Security and Intelligence Service, because before when it was a part of the RCMP, there was growing discomfort with a police service, with the power of arrest and whatnot, also having intelligence-gathering privileges. It was felt that this role should be filled by a civilian agency, etc. and so forth.

Hahaha, fark you, Porkins.

"I'm not 'man.' I'm not 'dude,' I am Officer Rivieri," he told the teen. "The sooner you learn that, the longer you are going to live in this world. Because you go around doing this kind of stuff and somebody is going to kill you."

Typical power tripping pig.

Bob Cherry, head of the Baltimore Fraternal Order of Police, said Wednesday that the union is outraged by the firing. Cherry said the officers in the FOP have supported Rivieri's actions.

Well of course they have. They don't like the idea of that sweet pension they earned by sitting on their ass for 20 years can be taken away for roughing up some kid. They won't even have to opportunity to fake an injury to collect disability pay on top of it.

One down, many, many thousands more to go.

The rate of police acting like complete asshats coupled with the ubiquity of video capture technology in the hands of the citizenry will, hopefully, lead to more and more cases like this.

(In states that aren't pushing to make filming cops illegal, that is. Isn't Maryland one of those states, btw?)

That aside, cops are routinely caught on their OWN cameras (dash cams, wall-mounted cams inside police stations, etc) abusing citizens, planting drugs and guns on them, etc, and - EVEN THEN - they are very infrequently punished let alone fired.

This being the case, anyone interested in fundamentally changing the cart-blanch to be a bully mindset that has over taken most cops in this country has to be pleased by this.

Next, we need to se our sights on the para-military style tactics and raids being so overused all over the country where cops in full riopt gear will knock down a door and shoot people and dogs while looking for a bag of weed, etc.

Seriously? You're a cop on the urban streets and you don't understand that "dude" is a harmless term especially coming from a teenager? You wrestle him into a fearful submission while you refer to farm hands? You are completely out of touch with the city, and you are about to have a farking heart attack. Take some time off and deal with your issues. How dare you use your authority to go off on a kid who is probably just trying to escape an already abusive home life. You pathetic, suck, abusive piece of shiat. You give every police force a bad rap. Go hang your head in shame. Go join a BDSM dungeon and learn to suck dick and call someone daddy. Whatever it takes to deal with your stupid issues before you die.

Well, y'know, I can't agree here, Miss. A cop tells you to do something, just plain do it. And no back-sass neither.

The cop does really repugnant things every day, often with guys like that. He was right when he said that his father had not taught him proper respect, but that does not take it away from the kid. He should know. And punishing the cop for just doing his job.. ? Not right. Not right at all.

So, in your opinion the cop was right in throwing the 14 year-old to the ground?

RammaLamma,

Respectfully disagree.

When a cop stopped me walking on foot, and told me to take off my underwear so he could make sure I had no drugs, I just plain did it. Later went to court and had him fired and prosecuted.

I have never taken drugs in my life. I was someone's teenaged daughter at the time. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and I was accosted by the wrong cop.

Would you want an officer to have that kind of power over your daughter, and fark her up for life?

How about shooting your boy's head off? Maybe your boy was disrespectful and deserved it?

Baryogenesis
Yep, I know, right? It was 20 years ago and he did it also to multiple other girls who were also subpoenaed to the hearing. You think it's not still happening? Here's the thing: Police officers frequently abuse their authority (SHOCK), especially with teenagers, because they figure they can get away with it. And they think they are badass demigods deserving of all kinds of respect.

In this video we saw a seasoned officer abusing his authority on a teenager. We saw the teenager mouth off only quietly and for a moment, compared to that windbag, and then succumb to it and sit numbly in a stupor and shock, waiting for the threat to just go away.

Total abuse of power. This is not what we pay public servants to do. I am mad as hell about this. Most of the people in my family are cops or military and they do their jobs responsibly. This dude in TFA was out of control and abusive. Learn to recognize it, learn to stop it. They are your servants, not vice versa.

Oh, and you Freudian slipped yourself with "The cop does really repugnant things every day".

I wouldn't be surprised if he did.

Wow! I have been out of this thread for too long.

Hi again, Miss. Excellent to see that because of your family you have a legitimate basis and perspective for your views and opinions. I myself am ex-military and currently work for a police force (not a cop.. an IT guy). My earlier point that police do repugnant things every day means just this.. they deal with the worst members of society, and also deal with the best members when they are at their worst. Drug addicts, muggers, and all sorts of shiat (literally, sometimes)..It is a job I would not want.

And of course there are police officers that act irresponsibly and even abusively. This is also true of school teachers, lawyers, doctors, priests and vehicle mechanics. But ya know what? I'm still pretty happy with my society as a whole. I can walk down the street safely, get good service at my shop, and when my doctor tells me to do something (or not to do..) I follow his instructions. And I am seldom disappointed. Of course sometimes I am, like when my ISP overcharges me or something, but by and large, things are good.

Been to Egypt? Afghanistan? Lebanon? Kurdistan? I could go on...

But I really do mean.. good on you and your family for serving honourably.

And of course, by the way I spell, you can see I am Canadian.

And Yulien, bad guess. I am neither.

I believe that any encounter with the police on-duty is a bad one.

These guys are busy and deal with bullshait all day. If you're interacting with the police, you're either getting their attention by causing the bullshiat or you're the victim of the bullshiat. Either way, you're not better for it.

This is a case of wrong kid, wrong cop, bad day, etc. The denial of a pension earned for years of service should be based on the cop's record, which could be missing many relevant incidents.

What has sufficient deterrent value to keep this from happening again? Different things work for different people. Having a legendary story about how one guy lost his pension would keep some in line. Another story about getting jail time for assault could work for others.

So why has the cop not been charged with any offense?

I don't know the details in this story, but I wish more cops would beat down the retard skateboarders here. They have two skate parks, yet insist on skateboarding anywhere, but in the skate parks. So far this year skateboarders have caused 16 vehicle accidents (by their skateboards shooting out into the street and them running after them without looking for cars like idiots), broke one woman's arm, have broken around 14 windows of local businesses, and are constantly running people over. They always decide lunch hour is the time to go tooling around on their skateboards and they don't car if the knock people over doing it.

I had one awhile ago run full force into me and then start yelling that I got in his way. On the sidewalk a pedestrian ALWAYS has the right away, even over skateboarders. I got tired of him using every curse word in the book towards me (he was maybe four years younger than me), so I threw his skateboard against a wall and a few wheels broke off. I've never seen an adult throw such a tantrum in my life after that. He kept threatening to sue, so I gave him my business cards and told him to go for it. It has been four years and still no lawsuit, so I'm pretty sure he was all talk.

Denying a Baltimore police officer of 19 years a pension is bullshiat.

Either you're a troll or an anus. There are ways to handle a situation like this that don't involve roughing up a kid for no real reason. Cops don't have carte blanche to assault people - even they have rules to follow - and as enforcers of the people, should be held accountable by the people.

I understand the need to keep skateboarders from tearin up the inner harbor, but there are real problems in Baltimore. Most of the cops there are really laid back as long as you're not being a flagrant idiot. This guy was so far out of line for the status quo, it's asinine.
