God, my old hometown built a mosque a few years back...thankfully before it became popular to hate on Muslims during this political season. They didn't really advertise it much, but it was a small building out in the sprawl that had Arabesque architecture and faced the road in an odd direction... Today that building would have been torched to the ground.

The people working at that site were Americans. Americans with jobs. In struggling economy those jobs are especially precious. This setback in construction doesn't help these men put food on the table, and they're likely to look for alternative employment. A risky but lucrative form of employment for these men may be dealing drugs. And you know what illegal drug sales funds, don't you? That's right: Islamic terrorism. Good going, Patriots.

My grandfather, god rest his soul until my father gets up there, served in WWII. Obviously, sentiments toward Japanese people weren't exactly warm and fuzzy. When he came home after the war ended, my grandmother told him about this Japanese family that lived not far from where they did (I'm from Chicago) getting harassed and bothered from neighbors accusing them of being spies or knowing about Pearl Harbor and leading to the deaths of their loved ones, so forth and so on. Well, my grandpappy was not a man to let something like that slide, so he walked over to their apartment IN UNIFORM and told them that if they ever had any problems from that day further, to send the jackasses to him and he'd deal with it.

My grandfather was a big guy, and in uniform he sort of resembled Patton. That family never had any problems after that. My dad would tell that story to anyone he could find growing up -- he was so proud of him. Being Germans, they had to put up with enough of crap of their own with people thinking they were Nazi sympathizers or worse. So my grandfather understood what it was like to be suspected of things like that with absolutely nothing to back any of it up.

If my grandfather was still alive, he'd put that uniform on, march over to Ground Zero and tell those bigoted pussies to shut the fark up and let them build the mosque and worship in peace.
