Don't speak for us.

Gates has been saying this for a while, and I agree with him.

Of course, the extent of the spending cuts I'd like to see doesn't end with defense funding....

I'm in agreement. Cut spending, and cutting out leftover cold war spending from the defense budget is a good place to start.

I don't get the bootstrappy reference but cutting military spending is a good thing.

I have a two point plan for cutting DOD spending:

1: Get the fark out of iraq

2: Get the fark out of afghanistan

How about cut the really wasteful spending.
Start with how much we fund the useless U.N.

Just the other day, I was thinking about lowering the level of the Mississippi River to prevent it from flooding this year.

I brought 2 straws. Will that be enough?

Why not just go ahead and mention the Department of Education while you're trolling?

It's funny how the militant types tend to be the ones who say that war is good for the economy.

Gato Negro: What's wrong with cutting spending... EVERYWHERE?

Does the word "Depression" ring a bell? Because if the Federal government slashed spending today, that's what we'd have tomorrow. And by tomorrow, I don't mean next week, I mean the day after today.

I don't like military spending, I don't like wasteful spending, I don't like medicine that tastes bad, but sometimes the disease can only be checked by unpleasant measures.

Well then, let's keep those african, mugabe-style printing presses churnin'.

Another few TRILLION, freshly printed dollars, should solve everything... liberal style!

Yes, because adding a federal administration to education at a local level is a brilliant idea. Education should be a state function.

It is a state/local function. Less than 10% of your school district's funding is from federal sources. If you don't take that money, you don't have to follow the federal rules.

Do the bootstrappy thing and get your district to refuse that money. Show us how it's done!

You can cut public spending even on payrolls but if it is going to be done it should be done in a gradual, planned manner. Radical changes are often inefficient.

Nice theory. Someone will seize on the "amurica will be defenseless if we cut defense spending thread" and you can kiss goodbye to any cutting of the incredibly bloated military. As it is you have to replace all the equipment worn out by losing in afghanistan and iraq. Face it boys and girls the republican economics have caught up to you and the bills have come due. Either print money or raise taxes.

That and the military aid we give Israel, which they use to buy weapons from us, is a truer form of "stimulus" than most other ways the government spends money. They buy F-16s from us, which keeps the F-16 production line open and keeps people employed. And once they're built, Israel pays for the crew, fuel, etc. It's a good deal for everyone.

2010-08-29 02:12:29 PM
I'm bootstrappy. I think we should get wasteful spending anywhere we can. If you don't take the money from us, we can spend it and help the recovery. As has been said, it must be gradual, not a quick shock to the system or we are all farked.

That said, at least military spending has provided some useful benefits, technologically... computers, cell phones, GPS. Still no damn hovercars though.

2010-08-29 02:12:57 PM
I'm guessing every Congressman and Senator thinks defense funding should be cut. It just shouldn't be cut in my district. Telling the people of your district that the jobs they're losing are for the greater good isn't a very good campaign slogan.

The problem is that "they" is a very broad brush.

I'm a "live by the sword, die by the sword" pacifist. If two bloodthirsty people are hell bent on killing each-other I won't stand in their way.

Except that a lot of the people around them who have no intention of killing anybody are getting killed too.

I'm completely in agreement with this. I would much rather we fund military R&D and industrial production, which yield new technologies and keep people employed, than fund $150K a year government administrators who retire at 50 with full benefits and 95% highest-salary pensions.

Yes and not selling them weapons won't do anything about it one way or the other. If we won't sell to Israel, then France will, or Russia, or they'll bite the bullet and make their own. The only way you're going to stop the collateral casualties is if we go in there and forcibly disarm and occupy both sides. That should work out great.

For some reason i don't think any Republican would dare cut military spending... If anyone i think Obama would take a stab at it if he can get some "bipartisan" support or at least some credible experts in agreement... Republicans would never take that risk to reelection and would likely use it to attack dems on being weak on security...
