A man in a Ford-150 pickup truck drove by, extended his arm and sprayed with a large can, police said. His vehicle was stopped a few minutes later.

"Initial indications are he was probably targeting the Westboro Baptist Church" protesters, said officer Michael Pecha, a spokesman for Omaha police.

George Vogel, 62, who lives just north of Omaha, was booked for 16 counts of misdemeanor assault and one count of felony assault on a police officer for the pepper-spray exposure, police said. Vogel also faces one count of child neglect because his child was in the truck, Pecha told CNN.

if there is any justice in the world, this guy's sentence will be commuted to community service already served. because honestly, good on him.

Oh fark.... this isn't good. It's exactly what these Westboro trolls want.

Expect a massive round of lawsuits against the man, the town, and anyone else they can think of for assaulting their (unfortunately legal) protest. This is why they do it: to get exposure and to provoke someone into attacking them.

Goddamn Christian trouble makers.

Jesus people. This is really a case of ignoring them for a few years and they'll go away. Did anyone else read in another article where Westboro blaming the police for not adequately protecting them? Deeper pockets to sue!

" Shirley Phelps-Roper, a member of Westboro Baptist Church, said Omaha police did not adequately control roughly 30 counter-protesters, who she said jostled with church members. "

I'm pretty sure that other high profile groups don't rely on the police. If they are going to holding events, they should be paying out of pocket for security.

Actually, what really works to make them go away are the counterprotests. Especially the absurd ones. I had the joy of listening to Shirley Phelps-Roper whine for almost an hour about it before she and her half a dozen brood ran away.

But aren't Mr. Vogel's actions just all part of God's plan? You can't punish him for acting on behalf of God, right? Right?

Why? What do they believe in that's different from what Christians believe in? Both of them believe that homosexuality is a sin and that gay marriage is a travesty... The only difference is that the Phelps clan protests at military funerals, while Christians merely sign ballot initiatives and vote for constitutional amendments. But that's just different actions they take based on their beliefs, which seem to be the exact same.
Can you name a difference in their beliefs?

See, I don't believe we have to ignore them. Ignoring trolls doesn't make them go away (I should know). Yes, a lot of people "put them on ignore" and "hide" them, but they still indirectly hear about them, or indirectly hear them.

Well, a caveat... Christ certainly wouldn't be anti-gay marriage, nor would he be running around trying to get signatures on a ballot to deny other people the right to marry.
But what do the WBC believe that is different than what Evangelicals believe?

They are coming to my town in October. I posted a discussion on TF Discussion to ask ideas for counter-protests and got some great ideas, but after all the main idea was to ignore them and I have to agree with this.

I fully expect them to start strapping bombs to the chests of their young and blowing up these funerals and churches they protest. They are one step away from being a christian terrorist organization.

OK, first you said "Christians", and now you said "evangelicals". If you keep following that trend, by your next post you'll be right back at the WBC, which we can all agree do share a lot of beliefs with the WBC.

No, get some 1x2 planks, sand them and wrap them with medical tape to make them comfortable to hold. Then get old sheets at Goodwill (not Salvation Army - crazy xtian stonghold). Nail or staple the sheets to the planks to form a long screen and encircle them while holding this screen. Get a boombox and play soothing music as loud as legally allowed by local sound ordinances.

Out of sight, out of mind.

Shirley Phelps-Roper, a member of Westboro Baptist Church, said Omaha police did not adequately control roughly 30 counter-protesters, who she said jostled with church members. She also challenged Knudsen's and Pecha's account, saying a few Patriot Guard members were among the counter-protesters.

The group was about 1,000 feet from the church when the driver came by. "Of course it was directed at us," Phelps-Roper, who is Fred Phelps' daughter, said of the pepper spray.

Yup. Here come the lawsuits.

thomps: if there is any justice in the world, this guy's sentence will be commuted to community service already served. because honestly, good on him.

Seriously? He indiscriminately sprayed an entire group of people with pepper spray. Was it OK that he sprayed a cop, as well? Or that some of the folks exposed weren't Westboro Baptist Church members? Or that the moron had his kid in the car while spraying pepper spray out the damn window?

Drive-by cowardice. If he didn't like what they were doing, he should've joined the counter-protestors, not try to anonymously soak Phelps-derper and counter-derper alike in OC.

2010-08-29 03:59:07 PM
An interesting counter-protest idea I've seen is to have the counter-protesters pledge a certain amount (e.g. 25 cents) per minute the Westboro "Baptist" "Church" is there. Take the proceeds and donate it to the very cause they hate.

Sure, but do you really think that he deserves the slew of charges that they're pressing against him? 16 separate counts of assault? Felony assault? Child endangerment (WTF)? It's a little over the top, don't you think?

2010-08-29 04:09:29 PM
I believe that Westboro Baptists have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country. That includes the right to practice their religion at funerals in accordance with local laws and ordinances. So shut up, bigots. This is America, damn it.

And besides, they're not really at the funeral itself. They're two blocks away.
