I find it odd that I, as a resident of Southern California, should find out about a couple of Mexican fisherman being eaten by a squid from a British news outlet.

As soon as I started the article I thought "Humbolts? It's Humbolts, isn't it?"

Yep. Used to live in Santa Cruz, went to Monterey Bay a fair bit. Apparently they are aggressive suckers.

FTFA:
"Within five minutes my right shoulder had been pulled out of its socket. I had 30 big marks on my head and throat and one squid hit me so hard I saw stars. They then grabbed on to me and pulled me down so fast that I could not equalise and I ruptured my eardrum."

Man, you got your ass kicked by that calamari.

They're about as smart as an octopus, I think, which should give anyone who spends anytime on the ocean the heebies (cuz octopi are pretty smart. Add the aggressiveness and size of a carnivorous giant squid and you have a problem).

"You go out and you try and kill it. But just so you understand exactly what it is you're dealing with: besides its eight huge tentacles, this thing has two whips. Each one is probably as long as this room and three or four feet thick. Those whips are covered with suction cups as big as this notepad. In the center of each cup is a claw as big as my fist and razor sharp. The squid grabs and impales his pray with those whips and drags it towards its beak, shredding the flesh as it goes, and these things can shred a one hundred pound tuna in five seconds. Its beak is like an eagle's, only it's about fifty times bigger and can bite through steel. Now, you make a mistake trying to kill this thing, and it gets you first - like it did the Griffins and those two divers - you pray to God those whips kill you before you get to that beak." - The Beast (1996 TV)

Article: Millions of killer giant squid are not only devouring vast amounts of fish they have even started attacking humans.

Wikipedia: Although Humboldt squid have a reputation of being aggressive, the only reports of aggression towards humans have occurred when reflective diving gear or flashing lights have been present as a provocation. Roger Uzun, a veteran scuba diver and amateur underwater videographer who swam with a swarm of the animals for about 20 minutes, said they seemed to be more curious than aggressive.[5] In reality, there is very likely little danger to humans.[6][7] In circumstances where these animals are not feeding or being hunted, they exhibit curious and intelligent behavior.[8]
