J.Garcia'sRightMiddleFinger: Barakku: If something is wrong with your country, you CHANGE it, you don't just whine.

So people are supposed to change things without verbally expressing their points of view or concerns?

biatching that America needs to fall to China and calling it a 'failing empire' isn't really helping at all, that's just saying you hate America, and you probably don't want it to ever recover. Being angry that America isn't being smart about internet access, net neutrality, ect is valid and those opinions should be expressed. But saying America needs to change policy is different from saying America should die, Hail China, which is more or less what I see around my university.

TypoFlyspray: OK, you have my vote. So long as you run against Cucchinelli, Palin, Bachman, De Mint, or another Nuance imparied mouthbreathing moral cripple.

Is Palin even running for anything? She seems entirely happy to be more or less a media correspondent, I think the attention and money matters much more to her than the actual politics. This is the problem with many/most pundits...

/Political office should not be a 'privileged' position, it should not pay well and it should not come with kick backs, and politicians committing crimes should face the maximum sentence in any case. Being a politician should not be a position of farking celerity, that's how we get assholes like this.

I remember one trip to [b[America we took. This was 10 or so years ago, so I was still in high school. The mountains were so beautiful.

It's such a beautiful country. It makes me sad to think that it's been overrun with religious zelots.

I hear the food and hotels are cheap as hell, and we can take pictures of all the starving kids. After that, we are flying to Rwanda for the running of the Hutus. Terrific genocide photo opportunity. Final stop, we are going to hike the jungles of Columbia. I hear there are some real good tour guides out there, with phones for calling relatives, computers for accessing bank accounts, and they video tape us everyday."

alltandubh: Not as scary as false equivalence. I get the sense from reading some of the posts on this thread that the US would have to be perfect in every respect before Americans would have any right to object to atrocities committed in foreign countries. I wonder how this kind of thinking would have played out in 1941? "OK, so the Japanese raped half of Asia and suprise- bombed our fleet, but who are we to complain? We have segregated lunch counters."

It's fashionable, like wearing a Che t-shirt. People in their late teens and early twenties picked up on the popular "Opposition Party" mentality that was all the rage during the Bush II years, and now they view everything through that lens of cynicism.

Okay, Rwanda is getting better and Columbia has done a complete 180.

Rwanda info: Link (new window)

In December 2009, small explosive devices were detonated on three occasions in commercial establishments in Huye (Butare), Southern Province, injuring several people. At least 4 people were killed and 52 injured in a hand grenade attack in rural Nyanza District, Southern Province, on September 26, 2009. In July 2009, December 2008, April 2008 and April 2007, unknown assailants detonated small explosive devices in Kigali, twice at genocide memorial sites. Most recently, two grenades were detonated in downtown Kigali on February 19, 2010, and a third was detonated later that day near the Nyabugogo taxi station. All caused considerable damage and one death was reported.

Colombia's back. After decades of civil conflict, Colombia is now safe to visit and travelers are discovering what they've been missing. The diversity of the country may astonish you. Modern cities with skyscrapers and nightclubs? Check. Gorgeous Caribbean beaches? Check. Jungle walks and Amazon safaris? Check.

Thanks for the correction. I learned something today. Peace!

Np.It's like people avoiding Bosnia or any of the former Yugoslav republics. You're missing some really beautiful areas, and they are largely tourist-free because people continue to stay away. Things change, situations improve over decades.

One cs,b. My cousin was in Rwanda about a month and a half ago and got the feeling that all is not settled there. There were also mixed reports about openness of the election there a few weeks ago, with some charges of voter intimidation. The guy ended up winning by 90% or more. You can visit there, but there are probably better choices in east Africa
