Not even the NFL is immune to the economic downturn, he said, but the league is still in much better shape than many other properties that have plummeted in value. Revenues aren't a problem, but the NFL needs to get costs under control, he said.

Aaaaand now we know why they're pushing for two more games so hard.

The NFL used to be interesting. Now it's just a bunch of roided up meatheads and future ex-cons with more kids than brain cells.

I'd guess 15 to 20 years ago.

So, if I cannot afford the entire team and franchise, how much would it cost to buy one or two players?

I hope Albert Haynesworth eats Daniel Snyder, and then has a massive heart attack.

You can't do that in the NFL, but college football is wide open.

The Rams or the Raiders (or both!) should be moved back to LA. That is all.

I can see where a town could lose a baseball, hockey, or basketball team because of the number of games but what the hell Jacksonville? You can't sell out 8 games? Move the Rams back to LA, the Cardinals back to St. Louis, and put the Jaguars in Arizona.

OK. I need someone to paint my house, so how much would a runnning back from a low-ranking college cost? And do I have to buy him, or can I just rent one for a few days?

Indeed. Spending the day in bumfark Maryland surrounded by thugs from PG County and rednecks from Stafford who are shiatfaced on $9 beers?

I'll stay home or watch it at pub.

Personally I liked the idea of moving the ownership and players of the Washington Redskins to LA, but keeping the name here and then giving them an expansion team (or Jacksonville when they fold). Snyder would be ideal as the owner of a flashy LA counter to the Jets.

Oh, so before the modern day 24/7 sports media saturation made every indiscretion public knowledge?

Steroids, illegitimate children and criminal behavior among NFL players isn't a recent phenomenon.

Ask LT. Or Lyle Alzado. Or any number of ex players.

Not a cool story bro:

My last roommate immigrated to the U.S. (Los Angeles) about five years ago. He's not much of a sports fan, but when I told him that the Raiders used to play in L.A., his jaw hit the floor.

/He knew about the Rams, though.

In the '50s, all the players had jobs. It was impossible to live off an NFL salary.

Big Al: sports stopped being fun entertainment when players were making more than everyone in the audience combined

"I can see they feel a certain connection with you as players. Baseketball, we can start fresh. Not allow teams to change cities or... players to be traded. And everybody will get paid the same! Just like when I was a kid, and players were treated like, like..."

"Indentured servants? "

The audience pays them. They're entertainers. They command those salaries because no one would buy a jersey or a giant sticker with their names on it.

Kinda tough to ask Lyle Alzado these days.

I will say this; Snyder's done a better job with the Redskins than he did with Six Flags.

The team valuations really depend on stadium ownership to go along with it. Of course the Cowboys are number one -- probably the biggest fan base, and the Jerry Dome. While I like FedEx, it's not nearly on that scale.

/Really don't mind "The Dan" Snyder, or Jerry Jones, or Tom Benson, or even Al Davis.
//Fark the Rooneys. Fark Jim Irsay. Fark the guy who owns the Iggls.

I think Snyder runs the Redskins like an amusement park. His own personal amusement park. Where he can ride whatever ride he likes whenever he likes and the other people that go to the park can fark themselves. And the people that work for the park are scared he's going to fire them if they even question his self absorbed micromanaging ass. And treats the managers of the park like prostitutes. He is a terrible owner and should be drug by his pinkies into fedex field, tied to the goal post, pissed on by the hoggettes, and made to toss Joe Gibbs salad.

Let's see subby.
Jerry Jones paid $70 million for the Cowboys in '89. Now worth $1.8 billion.
Daniel Snyder paid $700 million for the Redskins in '99. Now worth $1.5 billion.

Maybe subby no good at the math?

part of the problem is that, while Jacksonville is a large city, it doesn't have a very large metropolitan area (the city itself is about 913,000 people while the area around it only brings that total up to 1,313,200). so it's not a huge market and a lot of the areas within driving distance care more about college football than pro, so a lot of people don't travel for the games. I always thought it a bit weird when Jacksonville first got the Jags, would have made more sense to start a team in Orlando even with Tampa so close by.

//in this part of the state (North FL), it seems like everyone only cares about college football, pro takes a seat in the back.

Been to Jacksonville many times - I believe it's the largest city in the US in total square miles (it's like the LA of the south). I'm just saying there's no need for the NFL to be in such a market.
