The essence of National Socialism was that the "NATION" ie: the "real" German people (much like the "real" American people but with longer history of living in the "homeland") owned all the resources of the country.

Resources like Air and Water.

So when the "other" non-homelanders were living off those resources, say Jews (or Mexicans -- Mexicans would have worked if there had been any in Germany), they were stealing from the "Homeland" and thus inherently criminals simply by living there.

well that settles it. not really. some facts would be nice.

Isn't right or left untimatly decided by what domestic policy they implement (economic and social)? I'd like to get a look at what their domestic policies were like before the war. because when war starts everything goes to hell, our nice president threw our Japanese and German citizens into concentration camps that thought enough about this country that they were willing to die for it after all. maybe we were more alike than we care to remember. at the same time we had a whole race of humans we called blacks living a caste below us. so where were we on this wiki ideological scale? almost as far right as the nazi's but not quite as right since we didn't gas our problems away? but how can social social stratification and division and subjugation be a form of right wing politics? socialists practice that as well?

I don't say Hitler is a Lefty because Time wrote about him. I just mentioned the Time thing to point out that, until the war started, he wasn't viewed as a maniac.

I say Hitler was a typical Socialist, because he was. Read the Time interview with him. Read his own writings on politics and capitalism.

I have to laugh when I hear people try to switch Hitler and Mao and Stalin to the Religious Right. It's laughable. (Like when Democrats fawn over JFK; who was politically Right of Reagan. They wouldn't let him in their convention today.)

Hitler and Stalin were both committed socialists: that's why they became allies against the 'Capitalist West'. The disagreement was over the Soviet invasion of Finland and Romanian Oil, and Hitler's dream of re-enacting World War One. On Socialism: Hitler and Stalin agreed.

The term "national socialist" is a explicit rejection of the Soviet "International Socialist movement" -which Hitler saw as submitting to becoming a satellite of Moscow (like Cuba.) humm a few bars of "the Internationale" and you'll get the idea. Hitler wanted a Socialist movement that left Germany politically independent - a National Socialist Party.

Hitler spent the years before WWI painting postcards, and selling them to tourists on the streets of Munich. Exactly like the guys you see in San Francisco today. "Brown Shirts" refers to factory workers, just like "Blue collar" does in America today. The point being that you can't wear white if you do manual labor. A street artist, who gets involved with the labor movement, and has his political meetings in beer halls: hardly a Rich Capitalist.

1930 politics don't align very well with politics today, so it's a little hard to draw direct comparisons. What we call the Political Right really didn't exist. The entire politcal spectrum was shifting Left, away from Capitalism -which was seen as a gross failure during the Great Depression. Few people were demanding smaller government in 1934. And there was certainly no idea that Socialist countries couldn't make war on other socialists: that's a idea that didn't surface until the Cold War. (Although China and the USSR had a number of skirmishes on their border.)
