How do you practice for that shiat without breaking your neck?

Mugato: How do you practice for that shiat without breaking your neck?

Trampolines, big pits full of foam blocks, giant soft building blocks to simulate landscape...

As for the video, not bad. I liked some of the time-stretching they used. However, I noticed a lot of his drops included shoulder rolls...which I've heard is what you do when you don't finish your landing well (so you don't kill yourself).

What I'm most impressed with are the jumps he does that end with catching a ledge with his fingertips and then pulling himself up in one smooth motion. Looks like a damn videogame.

Using "cool" in this headline just doesn't seem right.

2010-08-24 12:40:32 PM
That one was pretty good...the first video I ever saw of this stuff was this guy. (new window) What I liked about it was how you sort of follow him through the neighborhood.

2010-08-24 12:49:49 PM
Good stuff, but a significant amount of it wasn't Parkour, but rather freerunning and gymnastics.

2010-08-24 01:19:10 PM
I bet cops hate trying to chase people that can do that.

2010-08-24 01:30:43 PM
Why do all these videos start this way?

Cool stuff, but I wish somebody would break the mold.

Those guys should fight crime. Or commit crime. Whichever, just make it look cool.

catchpenny: I bet cops hate trying to chase people that can do that.

James Bond certainly did in Casino Royale. I remember people saying the chase scene was too over the top with the fake stunts even though it was real parkour. Some of Daniel Craig's stuff was obviously stunt work but the jumping and hopping dude was real.

Yeah, Sébastien Foucan^, one of the founders of Parkour.

It's sick how easy he makes that look.

I recall the one posted last year. It seems like they've only gotten better and better.

Mugato: How do you practice for that shiat without breaking your neck?

Step 1: Don't be taller than 5'6".

2010-08-24 02:14:42 PM
The first time I saw this stuff was in Banlieue 13(District B-13). Any time a guy runs and dives through a tiny window that's higher up than he is tall is awesome.

It's the other way around. You do the shoulder rolls because a "real landing" would likely break your legs. The fact that he finished with shoulder rolls means he values the ability to walk.

Parkour *is* freerunning and gymnastics.

Wait, a 'sport' where being short is an advantage? Where do I sign up?

I think jockeys have to be short and there's less of a chance of breaking your neck riding a...whoops, sorry Christopher.

Impressive skill and admirable discipline, but compression after compression ...

Parkour is about the flow, getting from point a to point b as efficiently as possible and without letting obstacles stop you.

Freerunning allows you to incorporate other unnecessary movements, like flips.

Doing back handsprings across a mat is not Parkour, though it will help you train, it's gymnastics.

Thing is... when you stack points in your dexterity like that, your charisma is usually the first stat to suffer.

I agree that once Hollywood got involved it became as overused as the "bullet-time" effect from The Matrix, but I think that fad has passed for the most part.

Freerunning is Parkour. Just the English name for it.

ninjakirby: Freerunning is Parkour. Just the English name for it.

No, not really. Parkour is about being efficient in your movements, freerunning allows for more expression, doing things like flips, which are unnecessary, but cool to watch.

Parkour or as we've been calling it for years, gymnastics.

Just because you take off the uniform and put on a hoodie doesn't change the fact that it's just gymastics.

Not true, some landings are simply too much for the ankles and knees to take, and you will be doing damage if you don't spread the energy out over the roll. It's simply good survival.

If you are falling more than about 6' you are going to eventually do damage to your joints.

Not exactly. Parkour is distinct from free-running and precedes it. Outside of France, Parkour is considered synonymous many times, but Parkour is about efficiency and not necessarily aesthetic.

My eldest daughter has been taking gymnastic for a few years and is pretty good at it. It is really amazing to watch someone who really has excellent gross motor control.
We were at my sisters house a few weeks ago, and she tripped at the head of the stairs from the deck. I watched her fall face first, and everything moved in slow motion for me, I immediately thought of how I would explain this to her mother, how much pain and disfigurement there would be, and how would I afford all the needed reconstructive surgery. Kind of like an impending car crash, I was a long half second for me.
But the kid didn't flinch a bit. She instinctively turned her fall into a perfect cartwheel, hands hitting about halfway down, with a Nadia Cominici landing at the base. Didn't flinch or miss a step and she continued on as if nothing unusual happened. All us grown-ups were stunned.
So I guess gymnastics training helps alot if you want to do stuff like this. That, and being a 4 foot tall, 70 pound ball of muscle.

Meh. Sequence of flip shots. The best parkour videos aren't a series of interesting 3 second clips of flips, but a continuous video of someone negotiating some rather difficult obstacles.

Yeah, it's hard to fault someone for rolling out of a two-story drop.
