Here's the crux of the problem:

Some elderly people revert in dementia to the prejudices they grew up with.

You can't really blame an elderly patient for thinking they're back in a time before the civil rights movement.

However, holding the nursing home and caregiver legally responsible for that racism is the real problem. If a dementia patient wants to prefer white caregivers... well, that's terrible, but achievable. I know many sane and healthy women prefer female doctors (especially OB-GYN) for reasons that are, in essense, prejudicial. But few will deny they have a right (and sometimes, good reason) to make that choice.

Ok...now that was funny.

It's true...I was at Larry's in Port Arthur last month and tried to cut a Cajun two step...Eyewitness reports vary from "epileptic seizure" to "fish out of water". I am proud to say however that during the entire ordeal, I did NOT do the white man's overbite.

what_now: Heh. The Patients' right to chose the type of caregiver. Not really sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, you have racists idiots like this old lady.

On the other hand, do you want to a woman she has to see a male gynecologist? Do you want to tell a man he has to see a female urologist? If the point is patient care, shouldn't the patient be as comfortable as possible?

But only if it is politically correct to do so.

You know this didn't happen in the South, or the old lady would be used to the "help" being black, and would have had no problem with it.

Let's see...The old lady specified no black caregivers. When she fell there was a black care giver nearby who could help due to her instructions...Right?

Well, who could NOT help her. Because she is legally prohibited from doing so.

Your little schtick there made it sound like you thought the nurse had a choice.

Also, I notice you failed to address my allegations -- some may call them scurrilous -- about your dance moves. I will take that as an admission.

I will throw in this story:
I worked for a place where we saw all sorts of racism. There was this one dude who insisted that he wanted no black people in his room when the doctor needed an assistant. His main assistant was a black girl and then there was me, a messican. One day he called in complaining that he needed to talk to the doc's nurse and when he found out she was black, he would hang up on her. Finally, the black chick would talk and act like a white girl name "Stacey".He called in for "Stacey" and every time we would put the black chick on the phone for hilarity to play "Stacey". He would stay on the phone with her and even flirted with her. One day he came in and he wanted to meet "Stacey" for helping him out so much. The black girl came in with a big ole smile on her face and the guy never returned back to the office. Ain't THAT somethin'?

Yeah, my grandmother is one of those old extremely racist white ladies who hates all black people. Except of course, for the ones she has gotten to know personally, those ones are ok, but just those.

Back in high school she asked me who I was going to homecoming with and I told her Barin Sultani (sp? I dunno). There was a quiet moment over the phone before she said hesitantly "She doesn't sound... white".

I know it's not nice to taunt old people for the preconceptions they were raised with, but it is heartening to see how race is becoming much less of an issue these days. Of course, moving from a town of 60k to a city of 6 million may have had a lot to do with that.

2010-08-24 11:14:00 AM
But the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, ruling in Chaney's case last month, said applying that accommodation to race goes too far.

"The privacy interest that is offended when one undresses in front of a doctor or nurse of the opposite sex does not apply to race," the ruling said.

Quickly, summon Rand Paul.

Because she was not allowed to interact with someone for the sole reason of her race, while someone in the exact same position as her who was white would have no problem. That cannot be legally upheld as it's a violation of her civil rights.

What do I win?

It's "Airplane," and it should be required viewing for anyone signing up for Fark. I bet you find eveery thread ever posted about airplanes very confusing.

Airplanes are very confusing. Flaps? Wind shear? Why does pulling down on the steering make you go up? How does air moving over a curved piece of steel keep you from falling out of the sky? How is something that weighs hundreds of tons able to just effortlessly travel through clouds and storms, turbulence and come to a safe landing?
