That is awesome. How could it have taken so long to invent this?

Or if you were just too damn big to show jumping horses in the first place? (Reeve was 6'4" and 220 lbs... yeah, I'm sure the horse liked it, too.)

How could it have taken so long to invent this?

Even the article says they've been sold in Japan for over ten years. Actually, I saw ads in the early 90s for Japanese motorcycle vests with airbag collars that stabilized the helmet.

Shoulder-stabilized helmets with proper padding (inflated or foam) transfer impacts to the shoulders instead of to the neck. That's why they use them in the NFL. So, yes, a properly designed one will afford a lot of protection if you land straight down on the top of your head.

Regular riding helmets aren't sufficient, though. You need more of a standard motorcycle-type helmet, oddly enough. A shorty bike helmet or bicycle helmet doesn't come down far enough to be easily shoulder-stabilized.

It's still not invincible protection, though, and your protection diminishes after the first moments, so try not to bounce into a lot of different dangerous surfaces. Also, these things are kind of like life jackets -- not everyone feels comfortable wearing one, so not everyone will.

...At least 13 riders in the past four years were killed and several others were seriously injured in such tumbles...

Holy crap, that's a lot.

Seriously. Some sport nobody has heard of ("eventing") kills three people a year?

:-D I loved equestrian in college!

Not everyone can really get into the whole riding scene, but it's a lot of fun. If this kind of thing can make it safer for beginners, that's really cool.

I'm sporting about a 2 inch scar on my head from a fall off a horse. No, I wasn't wearing a helmet (durh). We came to a little wooden bridge on a road where you could see the water running underneath through the planks. We stopped, I let him check it out and then he proceeds to jump the damn thing flat footed. I came off the side, hit a chert road headfirst. He was 3, then. He'll be 20 next week and STILL hates those things.

This is one of those places where I just wind up ungodly sad at a joke. Everyone's got their weird thing where suddenly bad taste bothers them, and this is mine.

But it's funny, and I applaud you for the humor. I'll just be in the corner, being sad, and maybe cutting myself a bit.

I should say this to you though there is the Supreme Court ruling in the Commonwealth of the State of Pennsylvania that says to you that you cannot receive the DUI under intoxication while riding the horseback. And also the dissenting judge in this case made the rhyme from the television show that was about the horse that could do the talking named Mister Edmund.

Watching This (new window) makes me sick to my stomach, seriously.

The pony in my profile fell on me once. I managed to bail so she just smushed me into the next jump instead of squishing me totally. No way I'd want to go against big jumps that don't break when you hit em.

Eventing has gotten significantly more deadly in recent years, the reasons for which are very hotly debated among horse people. Personally I blame the increased emphasis on dressage.

So yeah, this is a frickin brilliant concept.

I forgot how many horses were in my profile, I meant the little white one in the jumping picture. She was just fine, though she did get a bloody nose.

You do know that most airbags employ some form of an explosive device to operate quickly. Dare I introduce you to Newton's Third Law of Motion?

Yeah the 144 mph or whatever it is would not be testicle-friendly. However, the look on her face would be priceless as her foot bounced off of my now bulging crotch.
So no introductions are necessary, we are very well acquainted, Mr. Newton and his fancy Laws of Motion. I used to regularly suffer from SDS.

If you haven't been thrown a few times, you aren't a real equestrian.

I've been thrown 2 1/2 times. Half because when I realized the horse was going to buck me off, I jumped and landed on my feet.

As the husband of an equestrian, I hate to agree with you, but you are correct. This product is going on top of my wife's Christmas gift list this year. Right after a new pair of black Dublin Paddock Boots. (Her old ones have holes in them.)
