Those people are all fairly well supported now.

That is most certainly a list of people who, without the support of an ardent minority, will undoubtedly end as failures.

/there was only one I hadn't heard of
//that being said, Brick was awesome

Swap out Jet Li for Michael Ironside + Rosario Dawson for Julianne Moore, and I'll call it a flawless list.

I like the author's point on Michael Caine, but I think he's in the top 20, somewhere.

Morgan Freeman invokes an aura of legitimacy. Even when he does absolute shiat like Evan Almighty, it never really tarnishes his ability, probably because he never stoops or panders, grovels or lowers himself to embarrassment. All the greats, Joe Dimaggio, Ted Williams, they struck out too, but they did so with class, with a confident, I'll-get-you-next-time grin. Don't believe me? Then go ahead and stamp your forms, sonny. I doubt Morgan Freeman gives a shiat.

Because you just read that in his voice.

By the way, the guy who wrote this column just offered the best defense of Tom Hanks I've read in a long time. I'm giving this link a +1 just for that.

2010-08-23 03:06:13 PM
Forest Whitaker
Gary Oldman

In before some dickhead posts a pic of that retard tween singer, I heart Ellen Page.

List wins for JGL alone, bonus for Viggo, DDL, and Mr. Bob Harris

2010-08-23 03:39:37 PM
I love Ricky Gervais but his movies suck. Invention of Lying was a cool idea that fell apart in the third act. Tom Hanks is a fine actor, but some time in the last few years his taste in scripts appears to have gone haywire. I mean, sure he'd have the occasional stinker in the 90s, but the last six years has been mostly stinkers.

2010-08-23 03:59:39 PM
That list needs Aaron Eckhart.

2010-08-23 04:21:11 PM
List fails without Sam Rockwell. And if you don't believe me, watch Moon.

Jason Patric

I'm assuming that subby's "he" is JGL. Who's the "she"? Kate Winslet? Before clicking I thought it'd be Helen Mirren. Dunno why.

I'd pay $10 to watch Ed Norton and Tom Hanks argue for 2 hours over anything.

At least half those guys don't need our support.

We should be supporting guys like, say, David Morse, who consistently delivers the good but somehow evades notice.

I don't get the point of the article.

I think all the people mentioned are doing just fine - with or without my 'support'.

People like Bruce Campbell, Michael Jai White and other B, C, D listers deserve my support by actively going to see their movies, or buying their dvds. The A-listers in the article? Not so much. Formuliac crap is crap.

By the way, go and watch 'World's Greatest Dad' by Bobcat Goldwaite, and starring Robin Williams. That film deserves a bigger audience and media recognition.

I liked this list a lot. That said, being a huge Jackie Chan fan I have to strongly disagree with the comment about him being a 'sellout'.

Besides the fact that mentioning a Robin Williams movie after your disdain for "A" listers needing support seems a bit hypocritical, I would also recommend this movie.

I was watching Back to the Future with the kids this past weekend. I finally got around to listening to the commentary tracks and (according to Bob Zemeckis) Crispin Glover would have absolutely ruined the ending to the movie if he'd had his way. He was obsessed with turning George McFly into some kind of sweatpants-wearing weirdo instead of a successful writer/dad/man after the intervention of his son in the past. Glover sulked about the lot and tried to persuade the crew to force Zemeckis to change the character's ending into something that didn't fit into the narrative. From what I've seen of him and read about him I think he skews toward the psychotic savant who can hit a mark and really deliver a line when he's not veering off into some delusional version of the world everyone else lives in.

All of this and a little of that.

I'm pretty sure there is a youtube clip of Letterman interviewing him and he is seriously tripping balls.

Ok, I understand your point, and yeah, I actually like a lot of the actors on the list. I just think the article should be more precisely titled 'Actors and actresses I like' rather than deserving of support. They clearly don't need any.

Having said that, most of the people on that list are A-listers, and their films do get a relatively wide audience anyway. We're not talking about obscure. As for Robin Williams and 'World's Gretaest Dad', yes, he's one of those A-listers, but the film isn't really a 'Hollywood' type film, and certainly wouldn't get the public knowledge it deserves despite Williams being in it. This is unfortunate as I think it's a very good film and would appeal to a lot of Farkers, and others who aren't Hollywood fixated in their film going. I enjoyed it immensely. Best (black) comedy I've seen in a long while. I'm sure if the general cinenam going public gave it a go they would enjoy it too.

Actors on this list that I like, and I would support:
Viggo Mortensen - Steals the screen in every movie he's in
Bill Murray - Best comedic timing & delivery ever
Crispin Glover - Never know what to expect from him, plus he looks like me!
Morgan Freeman - Makes me feel all warm inside
Tom Hanks - The go-to guy for a solid performance
Edward Norton - He embodies actor versatility
Daniel Day-Lewis - Best. Actor. In. Hollywood.
Julianne Moore - Powerful on-screen presence.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt - He was even impressing me as the "wise old mentor" trapped in a young boy's body on 3rd Rock
Jeff Bridges - Gifted actor, always brings his A-game
Meryl Streep - The go-to woman for evil biatches
Adrien Brody - Intense! Acting! Style!
Ellen Page - I love her comedic delivery witty & charming & lovely.

Actors that I dislike:
Leonardo DiCaprio - He's not that great an actor, and his fake accents all suck
Russell Crowe - How can an actor DESPISE all of his fans; the very people whose opinions his job rests upon

The rest of them I'm not familiar enough with to form an opinion on.

Did party down get good after the first few episodes?

Yes, I thought the first episode kinda sucked actually but I stuck it out and it got really good IMO. The orgy episode from season 2 with Thomas Lennon sticks out(no pun intended) as well as the episode with Steve Guttenberg's birthday.

I support this list and his reasons for each actor. It may not be a perfect list, but the reasons were cogent (mostly). I too wish Crowe would make another amazing movie.

William Forsythe deserves to be on there, but I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it; it's a purely subjective list.

sotua: We should be supporting guys like, say, David Morse, who consistently delivers the good but somehow evades notice.

Agree 100%. The asshole(no pun intended) cop character on "House" was great, and it made me appreciate him even more as an actor.

He'll be big when Game of Thrones hits HBO next spring. He plays a great part. Although he's going to have to stick his neck out a bit. Hopefully it will help him get ahead though. It's a good opertunity to show his chops though.

How about all these rich celebrities get off their asses and support ME for once? I'm sitting here as a poor grad student, working to some day get a degree and scrape by as a research scientist trying to cure cancer, and somehow these millionaires need MY support?
