Came for this, thanks.

DjangoStonereaver: I think JESSICA (aka The TOP GEAR theme) is a better driving song. (new window)

came here to say this. i will put money on the fact that if this song comes on while you're driving down the highway, by the time it is over, you will be going at least 10mph faster.

imagine how bad ass it would have been if duane had been alive to play a solo on that tune....

Jesus Built My Hotrod.

I can't listen to Motorhead while driving, most likely would rob a quickie mart and end up getting shot to death by the cops after the high speed chase.

I like "Honky Tonk Women" by the Stones for driving. The beginning just sounds "road-trippy" to me. Not so good for driving fast, but nice for cruising on an open road in the middle of nowhere. Yeah, man.

Excellent choice

Personally, Deep Purple's Hush is the song that causes my foot to get heavy on the pedal.

that is because the Brits have never lived in alabama.

its a nice idea, but the reality is a bit different.

Ringshadow: I got a speeding ticket for nineteen over while listening to the theme song of this.

I would worry more if you DIDN'T speed while listening to that song. Arguably the best intro music to anything ever.

My faves:

Fuel - Metallica
Cool the Engines - Boston
Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses

Nelly's Ridin' Dirty is a fun song to drive to, but it gets a huge knock for including freakin' police sirens. Scares the shiat out of me every time.

I Nth this.

Yeah. The first song I think of when I think of a "driving song". Sweet Home Alabama isn't bad though, didn't realise you needed to be an American southerner to like it.

/well, I suppose I am a southerner

No worries, we'll accept pretty much anyone except damn yankees.

Hey, come on. Sure "High Enough" and "Come Again" were too mellow to speed to, but "Coming of Age" was pretty good.

/Great vocals and Uncle Ted on guitar . . .

I know it's a classic Fark stereotype, but we're not all ignorant, broke, bible thumpers.

And it's only that hot 5 months/year.

Leather!: To be fair, there are some hot women in Alabama.

This is true.

Little shiat was reading over my shoulder, now on the other computer looking up these other songs. -- lol be nice guys. If she likes it I have to live with it.

I'm impressed your 10 year old knows who ZZ Top is. You are a good parent.

Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top has a recurring role in the TV show Bones. We pointed it out and see went to youtube. She taunts her brother and sister with them now. My husband and I like them but not nearly as much as she does.

You know that dance scene in Silence of the Lambs? That song reminds me so much of it for some reason.

/not sure what the real song used was

I'm still confused as to why they used that song in the Kentucky Fried Chicken commercials.....must have something to do with our wonderful sense of geographies and such as.

I'm a little surprised no one has thrown Spacegrass into the mix yet; I know there are some Clutch fans around here. I like to hear White Zombies Electric head part 1, but only when I'm driving. It bothers me any other time.

SirEattonHogg: From my limited experience, Brits I run into seem to have a fascination for is southern redneck culture. I've been asked about the South/KKK/racism a few times by British people here lviing in the Far East (so maybe not the best sample, but there is a lot of them living here). Like do you get hassled when you go to the south part of the US (I'm Asian)? It's like they have this 1960's image of the southern states.

Case in point: Top Gear episode where they go to the South.

Don't the Top Gear guys get hassled and chased by a bunch of rednecks in that episode?

IF you go WAAAAY out in BFE like 100 mi from the nearest city with 100K+ people or 50mi from the nearest interstate there are some hick towns that you might find some shiat like that but for the most part NO.

The easiest way to find the safe/potential klan areas would be to look at 2000/2004 election maps then look at a 2008 election map. The counties that was blue in 00/04 but red in 08 are THOSE areas. The areas red in both, blue in both, or red in 00/04 but blue in 08 are NOT

Oldiron_79: East Bound and Down is a better Jerry Reed drivin song.

This!

groak: Johnny Cash Big River

This!

dittybopper: Jesus was an architect previous to his career as a prophet
All of a sudden I found myself in love with the World,
so there was only one thing I could do
Was ding-a-dang-dong my dang-a-long-ling-long....

And this!

I'd also toss out a few

Kashmir and Travelling Riverside Blues by Zeppelin
Midnight Rider by the Allmans
Any track off the Jesus and Mary Chain album Automatic
You Know You're Right by Nirvana
Dominion/Mother Russia by The Sisters of Mercy

My driving music, as you may have noticed, is either long and semi orchestral or fast and dissonant.

First, Radar Love (and anything else by Golden Earring) sucks.

Second, take all of your lists and add Driving While Blind by ZZ Top and possibly Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers.

Dingleberry_Pie: I'm a little surprised no one has thrown Spacegrass into the mix yet; I know there are some Clutch fans around here. I like to hear White Zombies Electric head part 1, but only when I'm driving. It bothers me any other time.

My favorite Clutch driving tune is "Walking in the Great Shining Path of Monster Trucks". White Zombie is awesome driving music. Another good one from a newish band - "California Crossing" or "The Mongoose" by Fu Manchu. As I said though, the best is either "Take in the Money and Run" by the Steve Miller Band or "Rock & Me" by the Steve Miller Band.

And from waaay up the thread, "My Brain is Hanging Upside Down (Bonzo goes to Bitburg)" by Ramones is one of my favorite walking songs. Really puts stuff in perspective.

2010-08-19 07:15:55 PM
My 5 favorite driving albums (in no particular order):

Iron Maiden- Powerslave
Queen- Greatest Hits
Sleater-Kinney- Dig Me Out
Banner Pilot- Collapser
Arcade Fire- Funeral (great for long drives at night)

2010-08-19 08:13:36 PM
Poe-Haunted on repeat

dittybopper: rattchett: "Bonzo Goes to Bitburg" by The Ramones. Actually, most of The Ramones' songs are great driving songs.

Blitzkreig Bop is the best of theirs for that purpose, I think.

My three year old son loves that song. Any time it comes up on the playlist, he runs around for half an hour yelling "A! O! Let's Go!" in his slightly lispy way. It sounds more like "A! O! Wets Dough!"

/yes, he gets speech therapy

Also, Belly (Tanya Donelly, not the fat dude) - "Super Connected". "Gepetto"is also a cool cruising tune.
