Yeah, I can see that.

I usually, lacking obvious clues, guess E I O U S A N Y T M R P and then wing it from there...

Easy to remember:

(A) E I O U [the vowels]

(U) S A [Olympic chant]

N Y T [New York Times]

M R P [everbody loves Mister Pee!]

//do good at Hangman tho

Huh? I would guess that without picking any letters... the length of the word gives it away off the bat!

if you get that q, then you automatically have the u, that leaves 2 more letters, doesn't seem too hard.

Not to mention that there are very few letters you could choose that would be incorrect guesses.

Nah, once you have the vowels and rule out taboo with the lack of a t, that's pretty much all you have left.

I made that sort of mistake once in hangman--I chose a term out of physics I knew they had no hope of guessing. It didn't matter--long words have too many letters in them. A reasonably sensible opponent will get them even if they don't know the word. Consider yours, it uses the letters: aceilmnoprstuv and most of the ones it doesn't use are the rare ones. In the 13-segment version of the game you can't lose other than by forgetting what you have played.

I was stumped on a song title that someone had used for Hangman. After guessing all the vowels and the letter Y, and not getting a single one, I had blown 6 out of 8 incorrect guesses. I was stumped and couldn't figure it out. Then I slapped my forehead when the answer was revealed.

"hymn"

Sure a computer will guess it because the "y" as the second letter narrows it down, but people will usually guess the true vowels before getting the "y". At that point they're 5 letters in the hole and tend to not think clearly.

I would've said Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, but I don't remember if you're allowed to use proper names or not. It wouldn't work in Scrabble.

The five I always go with:

Syzygy
Promulgate (to summon)
Asphyxial (that which causes choking)
Corpulence (morbid obesity)
Pederast (duh)

I've never had anyone get Syzygy - Def: Three stars in alignment.

His algorithm is incomplete. Notice how so many of them have ZZ? That's because (if I'm reading the article right) the algorithm guesses Z with low probability. So having it guess Z twice is very unlikely. Humans, however, aren't dumb.. and would realize that if there is one Z in a word, chances are that it comes in pairs.

Silly researcher!
