This campaign urges each American, upon encountering someone in the military, to publicly but silently thank them, using a modified gesture from American Sign Language. It involves first placing your hand on your heart, and then moving it down toward your belly button and outward toward the soldier. With all due respect, Mr. Truitt, I will decline.

Clearly this is just a plot to help identify the Socialist Fartbama supporters. You've just fallen into their trap Mr. McGrath.

*makes awkward troop gesture*

I am not the Socialist you're looking for.

You're not truly patriotic unless you perform the Modified Russian Squat Dance of American Supremacy, WITH the ceremonial headgear, anytime a flag is shown on TV or referenced in conversation.

Really? To me it reeked of sleazy marketers capitalizing on a tragedy to bolster their revenue with cheap, Chinese-made trinkets that they could sell for enormous profit playing on people's emotions.

These farking empty gestures make me so mad. People think that making some hand gesture means they support troops? They think wearing one flag pin means anything? Here's a hint, bucko...those things by themselves don't mean SHIAT. SHIAT, I tell you. Yee-haw, you got you a bumper sticker. You're a regular-ass hero.

You wanna know what you'll see when you come to my house? I'll tell you what you'll see. I got me a flag pole, and from it flies an American flag. Old Glory herself. But it's not just an American flag, it's a Patriot Flag. Because I'm a patriot. See, I take all those stupid little meaningless things people do on their own and think they're doing enough because of it, and I pull 'em all together. That's right. You think one flag pin's enough? You think one flag pin means JACK SHIAT? Hell. On my patriot flag, I've got 100 flag pins, two on each star. And over every third stripe I've pasted a line of Support The Troops bumper stickers. Yeah, you think you're special 'cause you slapped one on your car. I got like 60 of 'em. AND THEY'RE ON THE FLAG, WHICH IS WAY MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR STUPID CAR. And you know that fringe that some flags have? Well the fringe on mine is made up entirely of yellow ribbons. There's like 250 of those suckers on there. I fly that puppy from dawn 'til dusk and sometimes use it as a blanket when I sleep, too. What do you think of your patriotic little gesture now, you commie?

What's funny is that I can imagine some douchebag doing this gesture at a group of soldiers in a bar somewhere and then getting his ass kicked.

2010-08-17 12:02:56 PM
Yeah, why do something that involves effort like volunteer at the VA hospital or send care packages.

2010-08-17 12:03:38 PM
So they want me to grab my left tit, gesture down my abs and then finish with a flourishy wave at a soldier?

Sold.

/maybe this should be a way to signal lesbians under DADT
//"I want you to touch my left boob and then go down on me... yes YOU."

The article leaves a part out. While doing the described hand motion, you must also tell the soldier "Fi dolla. Me love you long time."

2010-08-17 12:05:15 PM
What ever happened to a firm hand shake, look 'em in the eye and say "thanks"?

There's a house on my commute route that was flying the "Don't Tread on Me" flag for a while, in addition to the US. Every time I saw it, I didn't know whether to laugh, or cry.

This was submitted a while ago.

I have to say, whenever someone identifies me as a troop, and thanks me for my service, I always feel embarassed and awkward. Personally, I prefer it when someone I lock eyes with (while in uniform) simply nods his head or something. Coming up and trying to start a conversation is just ...weird.

Want to show your appreciation for troops? Get us home.

Isn't this the same topic from a video a while back, except all the comments were along the lines of 'Excellent! Now I actually have something I can use to show my respect to the soldiers I see in uniform in the airport.'?

Pretty much says it all. Another whining libtard professor snowflake who thinks war is icky and thus we shouldn't show appreciation to those who fight it for the rest of us. "Sends the wrong message", eh, loser?

Suck it, professor. Generations of American soldiers made sacrifices that made it possible for you to whine in comfort and safety. Suck it.

The original salute to the flag -not the hand-over-heart thing, but the one used before that- would have much more potential for lulz.

A Famous Mortimer Production: Ok, things are just getting bizarre now. A hand signal to thank troops? Really?

And is it really to thank the troops or to identify as Un-American anyone who doesn't do it or didn't get the chain e-mail?

My wife just spent a return flight from her mid0west relatives sitting next to KS girl who was headed back to Walter Reed for Her fourth leg surgery to try to save the limb at least somewhat. The girl noted how lonely she was being that far away from home and how rarely the soldiers there got visitors.

Speaking only for myself I think it is high time I started supporting the troops a bit more, and it won't farking involve buying a goddamned ribbon.

"Most American adults can distinguish the concept of support for the military from blind endorsement of a foreign war.

"Children, however, may not."

Well, yeah, but in a few years they GROW UP and they're not children anymore.

I don't think the writer's sandy vagina approach gets him anywhere. I'll agree that the gesture thingie is kind of silly, but the healthy response is bemusement, not panic.

Yeah I just thank them verbally. Hell if it weren't for failing the hearing test I'd probably be off somewhere fighting now. I can understand though, sometimes you have to be quiet and me needing to be on the left side of everyone and saying "Huh?" would be detrimental.

But I think that the biggest thing you can do to support the troops is insist upon your rights. If a police officer wants to search something ask for a warrant, remain silent, get a lawyer. Buy a gun, keep it safely away from your children and teach them that it is not a toy, but have it. Protest something that your government does that you don't agree with. No one has time really to go to a rally, but send an e-mail or something to your governor, school board director, whoever is not looking out for your own interests but is representing you. These kids are dying so that we can do these things, and they have been doing so for a long time.

You want to support our troops? Use the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

2010-08-17 12:28:10 PM
Why not just offer 'em up the brown eye, like our more submissive simian cousins do?

2010-08-17 12:31:11 PM
You know what, take your stupid yellow-ribbon decals, gaudy car flags, and meaningless bumper stickers and shove them up your ass. You don't need some overt "LOOK AT HOW PATRIOTIC I AM" displays to say you support something. Why is it that most people I see with such articles always seem to try to tie their disingenuous message in with that of their xenophobic beliefs.

I'm in the military. I've been to Iraq, Afghanistan, and several points in between. I'm going back to Afghanistan in the not too distant future. Guess how many decals or flags I have on my vehicles? None.

You want to support the troops? Hop on something like anysoldier or anymarine.com and send them basic toiletries, socks, and other amenities that are hard to come by over there. Lobby your representatives to get us the gear, missions, and metrics we need to finish the job so we can lessen the deployment demand and stop wrecking relationships as much. Yellow ribbons and flag-waving rednecks do not booster morale, and usually just make 'the troops' more cynical from what I've seen. Silly ass hand gestures aren't the solution either - there's nothing wrong with handshakes or hugs. I haven't met a single service member who does this for "thanks," so please don't patronize us.

Barring all that, ladies, EIP.

Whenever I fly, I try to anonymously buy lunch for the young soldier/marine/airman I inevitably see on the plane, and ask the Flight Attendant to tell them it's from a Senior NCO on the flight. I never fly in uniform and they never guess it's me because I'm a female with long bushy hair whose usually dressed somewhat hippie-like. I get a kick out watching them try to figure out who sent it.

The most meaningful support I can think of is ensuring that the VA and the American people are prepared to provide for the many thousands of (emotionally and physically) damaged young men and women that we are already seeing and will continue to see for years to come.
