I Read Phantoms and suddenly remembered that silly 90's movie and how silly it was.

/And how Billy Zane made it work

You know how I know he's a good actor? When you see him you don't even think about how he killed all those hookers in his movie star trailer.

I think he's a better writer than he is actor. I'll agree with the main point of the article though. He went down with the whole Bennifer thing, but has worked hard to bring himself back, instead of complaining about life being unfair or anything like that, which sounds ridiculous when other celebrities with millions do it.

I wish him luck, and I'll probably watch things he writes/directs, but I doubt I'll go to anything to see him act.

Hey, Phantoms showed us an early Liev Schreiber and how creepy he could be.

Agree with the article. But "depth-defying"? Really? This is why old-media is shaking their fists (their emaciated, unemployed fists) in rage at the crap that passes for writing these days.

I thought we were supposed to respect him because he's killed so many hookers that the studio cops have their own radio code for it?

Affleck's okay. He kept doing Kevin Smith films and DVD commentaries even after he briefly became a big star.

I started to like Affleck after the Jimmy Kimmel bit responding to Sarah Silverman f**king Matt Damon.

He should leave the drama and stick with comedy. His last SNL appearance was epic. His Olberman bit was hilarious.

Gone Baby Gone was a really, really good flick. Setting, maintaining and adjusting a movie's tone is difficult, and Affleck NAILED it.

+5 for that scene of terror when Casey Aff confronted the Hol(e)y Bartender.

I've had a soft spot for Affleck ever since I saw a clip of him doing his Regis impression on Regis and Kelly. I think he's one of those actors who is really a character actor stuck with a leading man face.

Ben Affleck making fun of his own role in Good Will Hunting was hilarious.

Affleck's contribution to the DVD commentary for Armageddon is epic. Basically, he makes fun of the entire premise of the movie the whole way through it.

'Why do you need the best oil driller in the world? How hard could it be? Point the drill at the ground and turn it on'

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I didn't start hating Ben Affleck just because the gossip magazines plastered his face all over the place. It's not like he was going out of his way for that attention. All he was doing was trying to date Jennifer Lopez. Of course most people are too dumb to separate what a person actually does from the constant media attention they might receive just because they're famous.

2010-08-13 12:22:45 PM
Every time he does an accent in one of his movies I laugh. I consider him more of a clown than an actor.

WideStance: Gone Baby Gone was a really, really good flick. Setting, maintaining and adjusting a movie's tone is difficult, and Affleck NAILED it.

The only problem with the film was that the ending was weak and obvious, but I suspect that was Dennis Lehane's fault as the author of the story and not Affleck's. And Lehane's gets some slack from me as that was the first thing he wrote, and he's done much better since.

I'm really looking forward to the Boston boyo robbery movie that Affleck directed; seen the previews and it looks awesome.

Um...you've got your Lehane mixed up:

Bibliography
The Kenzie-Gennaro novels
A Drink Before the War (1994)
Darkness, Take My Hand (1996)
Sacred (1997)
Gone, Baby, Gone (1998)
Prayers for Rain (1999)
Moonlight Mile (2010)

Other works
Mystic River (2001)
Shutter Island (2003)
Coronado: Stories (2006)
The Given Day (2008)

So, yeah...it was his fourth book, also fourth in its series. Not saying he hasn't done a lot since then, but...yeah, your timeline's off.

I never lost respect for Affleck, even after the crappy roles and the whole Bennifer thing. Dude is good people.

And I still like Jersey Girl dammit.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd pick Matt Damon.

Otherwise, meh ...

Sorry, I thought Gone Baby Gone was the first book in the Kenzie-Gennaro series. My mistake.

This. He's a decent enough actor but a really good director. I'll be in line early for The Town.

/not really early
/that sounds better than when I'm not on call and the sitter is available.
