(Yahoo)   The bad news is that the floods have left hundreds of thousands of Pakistanis without access to food and drinking water. The good news is that Ramadan just started so they're supposed to be fasting anyway   (news.yahoo.com ) divider line

That's not how Ramadan works!

My other comment was something about a hotel chain.

If only it was localized to Pakistan's ruling class, but shiat rolls downhill and I feel bad for those affected.

Wow. I don't know what it is that makes the suffering of people on the other side of the planet so funny, but someone should bottle it and sell it in the Hamptons and on The Vineyard. That's at least a novemdecillion peso business model.

Bravo subby!

I know I am probably going to Hell for asking this but....Is there any way we could use this as propoganda saying it is Allah's revenge for the public's support of the Taliban?

Unfortunately I have a strange feeling the reverse will happen if not already. Or the U.S. did it with our "weather machine".

Don't get me wrong, it is a tragedy. This scale of death and suffering should not be suffered by any people. Just the past few years have left me with a synical view of a lot of things.

Well, at least they'll be getting their reward in paradise. It seems that ol' Allah grants the magical pixie dust to enter heaven when his subjects "offer it up", just like the "grace" Christian God gives.

I have never seen such carnage as when I went to an all-you-can-eat buffet with Muslims after dark during Ramadan.

About a decade ago, the school I was attending was the "host" for the opening round of the men's NCAA tournament at the Super Dome and I got to work the tournament for the weekend as a liason for the teams and the coaches. I had access to everything except closed practices. That included the press room. You have not seen carnage until you see what low-paid sports reporters who have blown their per diem on booze the night before do to the spread that is put out in the press room in the morning. It's destroyed in minutes.

Actually, when I was escorting Rick Majerus to the press room and he stopped at a snack machine - that may have topped it. Funny thing was, he stopped at the machine because he said the sportswriters would have destroyed the buffet table by the time he got there.

Start dating a Muslim chick about a two months prior to Ramadan. Take things nice and easy. By day 20 of Ramadan she will have the tightest, most fit body you can imagine and pretty much rip the clothing off your body.

Bullshiat, anecdotal evidence at best. NPR just did a report last week how Muslims get fatter during Ramadan. Sure, they fast during the day but once it gets dark Muslims pig out on feasting and sweets for hours.

Egyptian Muslims were documented eating 3x the amount of calories than what they normally consume each regular day in other months, and they're even bigger gluttons on particular celebrations during the month of Ramadan.

They only have to fast during the day. Kind of like vampires.

/they don't like that comparison
//they also don't appreciate it if you flip the light switch on and yell "Everyone fast!" then off and yell "Ok, chow time" over and over again
///they ALSO don't appreciate it if you get them a carry out box from the chow hall during Ramadan, and when they open it, there's nothing but "Happy Ramadan!" written inside
////Iraq was fun

LOL. I wouldn't be at all surprised if someone did manage to spread a conspiracy theory (one of the fave nat'l pastimes of Pakistan) that this is somehow the U.S.'s fault.

Actually a lot of people gain weight during Ramadan b/c they eat so freaking much the second they're allowed to. And then eat all night, mostly greasy, carb-heavy foods.

Are there some Muslims who don't eat at all during Ramadan? Because I thought it was just a sun-up to sun-down thing (I thought there was a "break-fast" before sun-up and again at dusk), but then someone I know who is fasting made it sound like he wasn't eating a single thing all lunar month long. Wikipedia says people can eat at night, but are there some sects that are more strict in their observance?

/just curious

No, I'm pretty sure you'd die of dehydration if you tried something like that. I can't speak for what everyone does, but I've never heard of anyone not eating at all for the month.

The rule is no eating/drinking/sex from sunrise to sunset. But you're expected to eat during the non-fasting hours. You don't get extra points or anything if you choose not to.

Yeah, that seemed pretty extreme, even for someone ultra-religious (which this person by no means is). I think my friend is just full of it and/or looking for sympathy. ;)

Thanks for clarifying my doubts.
