Wow, the hatred on this thread should be awesome. Sadly, I like Rand Paul. I like new ideas. It's not as if the older ones are working out very well.

Actually, Rand Paul pretty much says he IS a libertarian, but that he doesn't use the word to describe himself because most folks don't actually know what the word means.

Which is true.

The federal government should not do what the states can do for themselves, the states should not do what local governments can do for themselves, and local governments should not do what families, faith groups and individuals can do for themselves.

I can never stop laughing at the new, self-labeled "constitutional conservative". Simple translation: I'm a life-long Republican who self-identified as neoconservative until I (very recently) became ashamed of voting Bush/Cheney twice.

This new breed also:

-- claims to be fiscally conservative (but supported $3 trillion dollars in war spending).
-- thinks the US Constitution should remain unchanged for the next eleventy billion years, until someone proposes changing the 14th amendment.

I don't know how they survive the mental gymnastics they perform each election cycle.

Rand Paul the "constitutional conservative" on abortion:

I would strongly support legislation restricting federal courts from hearing cases like Roe v. Wade. Such legislation would only require a majority vote, making it more likely to pass than a pro-life constitutional amendment.

I suppose the followup constitutional gymnastics trick would be having congress passing a law restricting federal courts from finding the previous law unconstitutional.

Pollexabator: I can never stop laughing at the new, self-labeled "constitutional conservative". Simple translation: I'm a life-long Republican who self-identified as neoconservative until I (very recently) became ashamed of voting Bush/Cheney twice.

Pretty much this. The label is for people who are too stupid to be actual Libertarians, who themselves are too stupid to be actually intellectually superficial.

2010-08-10 11:49:31 AM
Rand Paul stands firmly for your liberty to keep the darkies out of your store, and to destroy the environment with your mountain top coal mines. What other liberties could you need beyond that?

As a republican, my stance on those issues is this: leave it up to the states. Is Massachusetts wants abo-abos and gays marrying, knock yourselves out.

Its that whole federalism thing.

But what happens if the courts disallow the legislative branch entirely? What then? Ha HA!

FTFA

Our Founding Fathers were clearly libertarians, and constructed a Republic with strict limits on government power designed to protect the rights and freedom of the citizens above all else.

Our founding fathers were clearly politicians with very different visions about the proper role of government, about which they fought for decades.

Several changed their opinons over time, usually in the direction of greater government authority.

Read a damn book, Rand.

wraithmare: How's that keeping the government out of the lives of real Americans working out for ya?

You see, it all depends on how you define "real Americans" and to many of the neoconservativesnew-libertarians, it doesn't include heathen fornicating baby killers or teh gheys.

So, sadly, they apparently suffer little to no cognitive dissonance.

That's fine. What bugs me is when people who call themselves "libertarians" still think the state governments should have the right to interfere with your lives. And that includes much of Paul's "vast coalition of Americans" that "share many libertarian beliefs".

Of cou4rse, as a god constitutional conservative you want states that don't allow gay marriage to legally recognize the gay marriages of the states that do, right?

Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State. And the Congress may by general Laws prescribe the Manner in which such Acts, Records and Proceedings shall be proved, and the Effect thereof.

As a Republican, you must not understand what the 14th Amendment to the Constitution is...

Sure he does - it's what makes anchor babies. Oh wait, that's just the first sentence. Oh well, I'm sure there's nothing important in the rest of it.
