IF i was running the German intelligence service...(and i am not, for variety of really god reasons) i would probably try to put the place under surveillance, and all the people who came and went from there, and i would probably try and get a couple of people in there to penetrate the place... As opposed to shutting it down outright and driving anyone of interest further underground or away from meeting with their contacts/further plotting.

Why not be smart about it, avoid further alienation of the rest of the community that had nothing to do with the plot and maybe just maybe pick up on some other/follow on plans...

Agreed, i was more responding to those suggesting it ought to have been boarded up immediately.

The German government also collects a church tax and portions are given out to various "public law official" churches (Catholic, Protestant, Jewish), in addition to having something like tax-exempt status for churches.

The article doesn't say what status the mosque had before, and what it is now.

In some German states, Othodox Jewish congregations are "official" in others, Reform congregations. The offical ones get the tax money. It may be the same with moslem congregations.

But the article doesn't say whether it's a tax issue, like the IRS lifting the Christian Coalition's exemption for its political activity, or whether the mosque became so dangerous it was closed.

Usually in collecting intelligence it's better to keep things open and heavily observed. Closing that peephole is serious.

Suicide bombing wouldn't have been as effective in that era, Muslim warriors never killed civilians until they learned to from watching Christians bomb Dresden and Hiroshima. By then it too late for the Germans.
