They gotta do something now that there are no more bombs to defuse.

Actually, since traffic jams require constantly having to roll forward and stop, roll forward and stop, it's more likely that the sort of brainless halfwit lemming idiot who needs to text his inanities at every waking moment *will* roll into something in a traffic jam than he would on open road. So maybe the penalty for open road texting should just be the ticket, and the penalty for traffic jam texting should involve bamboo canes in some fashion or another.

what pocket said. you're still texting and driving dumb-mitter, even if you're in a traffic jam.

Yep. Traffic jam != motionless.

People think they're the exception... that even though texting while driving is worse than drinking and driving, it doesn't hinder them... they can text and drive just fine.

The police are doing this for the safety of those texting. Boston drivers, in general, are not a patient lot and you can get hurt for less.

What if traffic is so backed up you shut off your engine to conserve fuel and be environmentally responsible by not increasing to localized emissions?

What if you drive a hybrid that doesn't even use an engine at those speeds?

WHAT NOW?!

We must enact a law that car manufacturers must install jamming devices in their autos that will not allow cell phones to be used while in operation. To help offset the costs, we will require a large pool of customers for the new product. We can simply mandate that every car be fitted with the new device. This way we can be sure the auto manufacturer will be able to profit and continue to provide this valuable product which will save billions of people

CSB tiem!

First weeks i got my new and first car, i was stopped at a redlight and i got a text message. I started to make a "quick" response, but then realised i was still in the middle of the street, on a light that was now green. By the time i decided to move it turned yellow already; so i was stuck for one more cycle. Thankfully i was alone on the street at the time.

Now, if i get a message or call at most i will check who sent it, but I'll just find somewhere to stop on the side of the road, like i should be doing :)

But yeah, the law is pretty much the same everywhere - if you're in a situation where you need to retain control of the vehicle and awareness of surroundings, you should not be handling a comm device. Now people are arguing whether truck CB counts as well.

You'll also get a ticket if you don't have your seat belt on in a traffic jam, or if you take your helmet off while your motorcycle is idle, or if you remove your sacred daffodil from his car seat*

When I was a young drunkard, a friend got hammered and decided to pass out in his back seat instead of driving home. Even though the keys were in his pocket, he still was convicted of DUI. Perhaps this is what we have to look forward to from the thugs in blue, texting within 20 feet of a car will get you a citation.

Is texting worse than talking?

Is talking while hands-free worse than talking not hands-free?

If talking while hands-free is legal, is it not legal to text while hands-free?

Heck in some places, electronic communication while driving is against the law.

Take turn signals -- a no no. Veteran drivers even disconnect the brake lights.

I had a friend busted for DUI on his bicycle.
So now it's on his record and his drivers license is suspended so he can't drive a car.
But if he had gotten the DUI while driving a car he would still be able to ride his bicycle.
How is this fair?

Definitions within Mass. law:
"Mobile electronic device", any hand-held or portable electronic equipment capable of providing data communication between 2 or more persons including, without limitation, a mobile telephone, a text messaging device, a paging device, a personal digital assistant, a laptop computer, electronic equipment that is capable of playing a video game or digital video disk or equipment on which digital photographs are taken or transmitted, or any combination thereof, or equipment that is capable of visually receiving a television broadcast; provided, however, that mobile electronic device shall not include any audio equipment or any equipment installed or affixed, either temporarily or permanently, in a motor vehicle for the purpose of providing navigation or emergency assistance to the operator of such motor vehicle or video entertainment to the passengers in the rear seats of such motor vehicle.

"Electronic message", a self-contained piece of digital communication that is designed or intended to be transmitted between mobile electronic devices; provided, however, that the term electronic message shall include, but shall not be limited to, electronic mail, a text message, an instant message, a command or request to access an internet site or any message that includes a keystroke entry sent between mobile electronic devices.

Actual Law:
No operator of a motor vehicle shall use a mobile telephone, mobile electronic device or other device capable of accessing the internet to compose, send or read an electronic message while operating such vehicle. For the purposes of this section, an operator shall not be considered to be operating a motor vehicle if the vehicle is stationary and not located in a part of the roadway intended for travel.

Conclusion:
Operating your electronic radio in your car is illegal. As is using your GPS, as is reading your dashboard and/or any other electronic display within your vehicle, presuming such electronic display is connected to a microprocessor and a communication interface (which they all are).

Yeah, that's kind of weird. I mean, you don't need a driver's license to ride a bike... so why should infractions on your bike effect your license? Doesn't make sense.
