CaptainWes: Why is this being treated like it is revolutionary or something. Luther Vandross already invented this, it's called the Luther Burger, and shut the fark up you Indiana morons.

I'm shocked that a guy who died at 54 invented something like this.

We tried the deep fried butter at another local fair a couple weeks ago, and it's pretty much exactly what you'd expect. I managed to down two before I couldn't stand it anymore and passed along the rest of my order to some fellow curious attendees.

/need to try chocolate covered bacon sometime
//why yes I am a hoosier

Is there a way to prepare my butter so that it makes me drunk? Can we deep fry that?

2010-08-08 11:24:33 AM
I went to this fair the other day. Donut burger wasn't to bad if you like savory and sweet together. The bacon was the best. The chocolate one was a little weird. Kind of like how skyline chili is sweet chili. But fried pickles are not unusual. I have had those everytime I go to N'orleans. They need to try deep fried coca-cola

Nice! But do you know what the queers are doing to the soil?

monkeyman3875: Deep fried butter? I'm having diarrhea just thinking about it.

We've had deep fried butter here at the Texas State Fair for at least 2-3 years, so I'm not sure how they invented it or popularized it. And, for the record, it's disgusting.

This was around at the State Fair of Texas.. in September of *last* year.

/Old news is so exciting!.jpg

Deep fried butter was served at the Iowa State Fair, about 4 years ago. Old news is getting older.

Evil Canadian: Ick Ick Ick. I can't stand the mix of salty and sweet, and that just looks disgusting. So does chocolate covered bacon. Sweet things go with sweet things and salty things go with salty things, and keep the 2 separate, thanks very much.

Meh, I love chocolate covered pretzels so I have to disagree with you.

I hate to say it but I really don't even like bacon. I'll eat it if it is there but not out of choice really.

You've gotta find better friends if the ones you have are forcing you to eat bacon at gunpoint.

But, they have bacon!!! How can you have better friends than that?

My delicious stash of Payday bars might disagree with you.

Try Fleur de Sel Caramels- they'll change your mind!

Meh, chocolate covered bacon is old hat. Vosges has been making a bacon chocolate bar for years - first saw it in a Whole Foods around 5-6 years ago. Many candy/chocolate boutiques have chocolate covered bacon, as well.

I need something new and exciting in the world of bacon.

Deep-fried butter... didn't the guy think of adding some lard in the butter perhaps? it's the sort of food you sweat profusely while eating, and maybe have to take a nap after.

Evil Canadian: I can't stand the mix of salty and sweet, and that just looks disgusting.

You shouldn't, it tastes really good when it's done right. A place nearby does a really great apple tart with flower of salt as a garnish, and it tastes great. The trick is to keep both the sweet and the salty flavors subtle.

I saw various deep-fried crappola at The O.C. Fair yesterday. People were lined up for it.

Yeah, this stuff has been around for years:

http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/408019

That article is from 2007. And the writer is saying that he's not even surprised to see fried Coke anymore.

It's a pretty interesting situation. You have people who started to compete with each other at State Fairs. They'd see what the other guys were doing and then try to top it the next year. They experiment, try out different batters, different ways to keep the items intact, etc. Supposedly they're done well enough that enough people can take it seriously and give it a try, which is something you can't really get in an article.

I have to agree with crw308 on this one - I remember reading something about burgers with donuts for the buns, at least three or four years ago.
And the guys who did that probably got the idea from somebody else.

None of this, I want to put in my mouth. Ever.

2010-08-08 12:38:11 PM
So basically they just added eggs to the Luther burger and dropped a piece of butter in the deep fryer.

/not impressed

Could someone post some pics of the actual people waiting to get these taste treats? First thought was of a wall to wall spandex clad line rolls of fat, and I'm not talking about what was being served....but who was being served.

the minor league ball team around here has deep fried Pepsi.

I have to agree that sweet and savory together is just awesome. I love a grilled cheese and jelly sandwich. Or pork chops with apples. Oh, and poached eggs on top of pancakes then topped with orange marmalade. Yummy.

The husband doesn't like sweet and savory though, so our dinners are usually pretty blah to my taste buds.

2010-08-08 12:56:35 PM
I'm gonna open up a booth at the next fair... we'll have two items on the menu: sugar, and salt. Take your pic, they come in a 32 oz cup with a spoon. You can even do "swirl", half sugar half salt.

Oh goody! Yet another bacon thread.

I certainly do admire the pro-bacon contingent. They certainly are brave and original with their in-your-face-holier-than-thou approach to the heath food nuts. Take that you dirt-eating hippies! Somebody disagrees with you and is proud of their perfectly cromulent lifestyle. Their world view is more correct than yours, you maggot-infested FM types.

Isn't this the same state fair where 140 people got trapped on one of the rides when it stopped for some unknown reason? I think we may have solved the mystery...

I like to eat sandwiches with bacon AND a tomato from my garden. What am I? A dirty hippy or part of the pro-bacon contingent? I feel so confused. I hate myself a little, and I also feel superior to myself.

Deep fried pickles are the only of the deep fried foods that I eat. They are delicious. The first time I had them was at a restaurant in Starkville, MS and have yet to find any that were as good.

/They should be made with hamburger dills, not dill spears :(
