BobSoccamono: Maybe in Australia not in Georgia

In Australia the phrase is merely a slightly cruder form of G'day Mate.

Well, I don't know so much about the "legitimately" part. "Technically", maybe, but there isn't much that goes on that is legit.

I'm sure you've had extensive run-ins with the law, right?

I have, and I can tell you that cops can and will do whatever the fark they want to. And very likely get away with it.

And I don't even hate them especially. I'd never tell one to fark off, unless he was beating me up or something.

Stanfan114: Hacker_X: Stanfan114: Sometimes there is an episode of COPS in England or Russia. I am amazed what cops in those places put up with. If that kind of behavior happened in the States, those suspects would be on the ground soaking up the taser amps.

Amps? As in plural? I hope you mean volts because .1 amp can kill you, 1 most certainly will kill you, and several amps can make a rather disgusting mess.

Yeah thats what I meant. I've been meaning to learn that stuff for years but never got around to it.

It's easy

V = I * R

Like

8 = 2 * 4

Then the math is easy too.

I = V / R or 2 = * / 4

V = Voltage
I = Current
R = Resistance

Heck, even he knows it.

clyph: myinternetname: Foreign news. Yawn.

That won't fly here, may not be specifically illegal but it violates other crap.

Actually, there is a significant body of case law saying that flipping off cops is protected speech under the First Amendment. Not a smart thing to do, and you're more than likely going to go to jail, but you could very well get a nice paycheck at the end.

Don't forget the all around, catch-all offense known as "Contempt of Cop." You don't even need to confront a cop, or even say a word to him/her. A cop yells at you to do something and if you don't do it fast enough to please them, that's an arrestin'! Standing 50 feet away taking a video of a cop trying to arrest someone else? Well, they'll arrest you for "obstruction" even though you are in no way in violation of the law.

Nearly all of these bogus arrests will have charges dropped, but you will still have an arrest record. Cops can fark up your life over this kind of stuff and there's nothing you can do about it unless you've got 3 or more videos with sound and a platoon of lawyers to litigate it.

Mere rudeness shouldn't be a crime, period.

FTFA: However, police prosecutor Sergeant Richard Scholl argued Mr Kaitira's code of conduct was offensive and stinging towards the policewoman.

"He displayed behaviour and made jibes with the intention to insult. Police should be shielded from this type of language and the community cannot accept it's OK for a private citizen to tell police to f*** off," he said.

Queensland Police Union President Ian Leavers agreed and called for an urgent appeal of the case, which could set a precedent in Queensland law.

"It is a sad day when the courts and government say it is OK to use four letter words at police," he said.

"To say it's OK to use offensive language at police in the street, who are just doing their job makes, no sense at all."

This is about whether police have the right to criminalize behavior towards them that isn't a crime when done to anyone else at work. Somehow, the average non-police person manages to survive relatively unscathed when someone gets away with saying "f**k off" to him. There's no reason the police alone should be privileged with the ability to press charges against someone simply for being rude to them.

What about prosecutors? Their sole occupation is to put you IN jail.

True but in my experience the lawyer hate is usually pointed at the defenders. Maybe because for most cases the accused doesn't really deal with the DA's.

Some people just need someone other than themselves to blame for their predicament. Every time I was arrested, I was guilty of the crime I was charged with, of course I didn't tell anyone that and I tried my damnedest to get away with it.

Haha, I realize these posts make me sound like a degenerate criminal and maybe I was but it has been 11 years and my record has since been expunged so I am not ashamed to talk about it.

TFA: "Really the word has lost its affect due to its use in books, films, and general speech."

Really? The word no longer feels emotions?

"Affect" (noun): emotion (e.g., "One symptom of this psychological disorder is flattened affect.")
"Affect" (verb): to cause a change (e.g., "Your insults did not affect him.")
"Effect" (noun): a change in something (e.g., "Your insults had no effect.")
"Effect" (verb): to bring something about (kinda outdated, e.g., "The board members effected a change in policy.")

What you want is "Really the word has lost its effect due to its use in books, films, and general speech."

I think it probably is a bad idea to let people speak towards a cop in a significantly disrespectful manner in front of a crowd.

One drunk is pissed you're pouring his beer down the sewer, his buddy starts cursing you out... it might encourage others to escalate behaviour.

Now, two people without any danger of riling up a crowd should be able to say pretty much anything up to (but not including) credible death threats without the cop bothering to reach for a ticket book.
