Maybe they can use it as a air-refueling tanker, unless they lose the competitive bid again.

But then, they'll whine like the last time they lost and get a third shot at the bid.

/Or isn't that a fourth shot?

If the article is right and Dubai represents a big part of those cancellations, then I'm sure this cancellation was no real surprise to anyone inside Boeing.

A few years ago The Economist had a feature on Dubai, highlighting how they were building a financial services oriented economy out there in the desert. I was like, yeah, that won't work.

Hey, they have extravagantly expensive living spaces too! in the middle of the desert! Who among the rich and famous wouldn't just die to live out in the desert in the middle of nowhere?

In a country where pretty much everything fun is illegal. Sure, they look the other way, but you only have to piss off the wrong person and suddenly that shiat becomes enforceable.

I thought they were building a luxury tourism-based economy.

Because that works so well for Egypt.

I dunno. Michael jackson lasted quite a while in those parts..And he was on the edge of flat broke at that point..

You're forgetting what a tourist destination Dubai is, if you flip off a driver for nearly killing you (and one almost certainly will), or kiss your wife in public, you'll go to jail.

Clearly they're on solid economic footing.

I assume this is th exact same bullshiat story as the ones boeing shills put out about airbus, but in reverse?

Times are hard selling planes, but the new ones from these companies will be the dominant planes in the sky for many years to come. Both of them.

It has huge reserves, around ~100 billion barrels.

Even if the UAE continued current production levels, they have proven reserves expected to last ~150 years.

Ha! If it is Boeing it ain't going!

2010-08-06 06:09:15 PM
Yeah.

Middle Eastern airlines continue to cancel "me too!" orders. Boeing still has well in excess of 800 orders for the 787, which will take years to build.

They still have orders equal to more than 50% of the number of deliveries they are making this year with an enormous backlog of orders.

Dude, you're supposed to hate Boeing in a Boeing thread, and Airbus becomes Scarebus if it's about them.

I wouldn't say a cancellation of 15 787s (along with orders for 2 other models) constitutes: "customers are falling over themselves to cancel orders".

That's just me though. I'm a fanboy.

The cancellations are from Dubai Aerospace Enterprise and Airbus just had 25 cancellations from them too. There is a much better article on this here (new window), which isn't linked in TFA.

Not going to do it.

Boeing has a great plane in the 787 and a very strong lineup. They may be outsourcing, but they are building another factory in SC to make the 787. And a lot of the planes are sold overseas. Boeing is one of the few bright stars in our exports portfolio.

We have to ship something to China don't we?

Dubai is actually full of hookers from all over the world. Lots of them have bought apartments there too, so they got that going for them.

ze_foster: I'm looking forward to hearing how it won't cost a dime to bail out Boeing.

Boeing's fine. They've got a couple senators and some congress-critters helping to funnel business their way. They still have 255 orders on track across their fleet for this year.

alzahra: Even if the UAE continued current production levels, they have proven reserves expected to last ~150 years.

They're talking bout Dubai, which is only a small part of the UAE.

From what I heard Abu Dhabi controls the lion's share of the UAE's oil reserves.

As for oil, the UAE has big reserves, but Dubai itself has little. And being that it's got a port, it's not exactly in the middle of the desert...

The Dreamliner was supposed to be entering service two years ago. I remember Boeing promising one customer, Cathay Pacific I think, they'd have their first Dreamliner in time for the Olympis in Beijing. Oh well, maybe they'll have it in time for London in '12.

It'll be a long time until Boeing needs a bail-out. As has already been pointed out in this thread, they're still making money hand over fist.

Dubai was built on borrowed money, oil profits, foreign technical expertise and foreign labor. Take away any one of those legs and the stool collapses.

I understand Dubai is broke right now.

No surprise.
