Let go of the paranoid bullshait. They're going to be like every other group of immigrants that have come into this country. We'll absorb part of their culture and they'll absorb part of ours. In 50 years, they'll join us in complaining about the newest group of immigrants. It's the same tired old arguements made about every group that ever immigrated to this country since the early 1800's.

and I agree with you that we should have some kind of sane immigration policy. I just think we should make it easier and more practical to get a work permit than to sneak across the border. That way we could get our tax dollars from their labor. But I'm in awe of most Mexican migrant workers. Those guys are the hardest working SOBs I have ever seen in my life.

Pman: A good point about the Quebec separatists, but it certainly did some amazing stuff for language ability there. My wife and I went up there (Montral) and were hard-pressed to find anyone who wasn't fluent in both languages. It was odd talking to many of them, especially the younger ones, because they figured everyone was multi-lingual. My favorite line: "But... I thought all Americans spoke English and Spanish? Don't they teach it in the schools?"

No I am someone who takes great pride in my Scottish and Irish heritage yet can still remain American. I have no right to do that and at the same time expect someone else to abandon their heritage in an attempt to "assimilate". Until you also demand an end to celebrations such as St. Patrick's Day and Octoberfest, all your spouting is a lot of hypocritical bullshait.

American culture is a blend of the cultures that have fed into it. One more immigrant group into the group is just another drop in the bucket.

You think if I could form a practical plan for helping to bring all of Mexico into the 21st century that I would be on Fark ignoring my filing and paper-pushing duties? I just know that doing it would reduce the number of people sneaking across the (very pouros) Mexican/US border, which would reduce the workload on Immigrations, which would allow them to spend more time tracking down people who might have come here looking to blow something up, not to make enough dough to feed their family.

States that were onces Mexican are:
Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, California, Nevada. (oregon and washington are iffy.. dispute with spain and russia about those area)

By the way I'm a history Professor so I know what I'm farking about.

I can appreciate that, and I know that there's a few who aren't. But I spent a summer working in irrigation, and some of those guys are amazing.

perhaps you missed the part where I said that ENGLISH IS VERY DIFFICULT TO LEARN. Look up how many definitions there are for "set" in your dictionary, if you have one. And, particularly in poorer countries, there's simply no opportunity to learn English.
