this. times ten. It is hard to mange your lawyer to want to actually win and not make you broke. One technique is to have another lawyer lined up and ready to go and let your first lawyer know it. Lose and your out, with another loss on your record, and the loss of face to your other lawyer colleagues. You can use their ego against them, and let them know, up front, they do not get you as a client for any appeals. You lose, you move on. You don't work with losers.

People who aren't in the business misunderstand social worker types. It's not really a job, it's more like an addiction. You manage to save that one first kid, get them out of abuse or neglect, and it's like meth. You can't quit. Some kid you've never seen before tells you he's being beaten/raped/whatever, when they've never told anyone else in their lives, it's indescribable. When you can pretty well substantiate it and help the family get help, you've done something that will help that child and their children for generations to come.

I'm just an investigator. I go in and find out if something's happening that shouldn't be, put a band-aid over the bullet wound, and pass it on to someone who can hopefully guide the family into a better situation. It's the ongoing workers (I'm guessing namegoeshere's name goes here) and good foster parents who do the real miracles.

There's two downsides to the business. First, it doesn't pay well for someone who has a bachelor's degree. Second, you have to put up with people saying, "I couldn't do your job, I just love the kids too much to see them suffer that way." I've begun to answer with, "You just don't love them enough to put up with the pain enough to help them. I understand." What you said I can appreciate, and thank you for. It may be a subtle difference in the two wordings, but the meanings are radically different.

On the (admittedly rare) occasion I say that, or something near that, it's meant to make someone stop and think. It can really open up an interesting dialogue if you can make someone look at a subject from a thoroughly different perspective. Sometimes a shock to someone's belief system or thought processes is a good thing. Unfortunately, it's hard to convey tone via message board, and I seem to have failed to do so here. My apologies.

By the way, if you and your wife were just alike, one of you would be redundant. My wife is a teacher. We frequently tell each other how we each like our own jobs better. I'd be a lousy teacher. I don't have the patience for it. She'd be a good investigator, until she burned out in six months. She really couldn't handle the secondary trauma. Since I went through it myself, I can shrug it off. We both help kids in our own ways.

I'm going to bed. It's been a long week. You'd be surprised the percentage of social workers who were abused as kids, though. I'm thinking it's quite a bit higher than the general population.
