The funniest thing of all is the message that this story revolves around was a text saying "This is it." That's all the text said. But don't let that stop ESPN from doing a one hour special on the subject yesterday. At one point they claimed Favre was having a press conference at 2 PM CST, yesterday.

Brett and his agent Bus Cook have long been suspected of masterminding these retirement rumors, dating back to 2004. The same story keeps playing out every year. Brett keeps quiet all offseason, people close to him leak little bits of news, the media goes nuts, Favre comes out to quell the rumors, then makes an announcement shortly afterwards.

Believe the conspiracy or don't, but if Favre is not the source of these rumors, nobody can deny that he enables them by not coming out to say one way or another until August. He is the one with the power to stop all this from happening each year and yet he continues to not do so.

Maybe he shouldn't have waited until May to have ankle surgery.

And he hasn't made it clear at all. Yesterday Brad Childress said he has no idea what Favre's intentions are. Mere moments ago, he told Ed Werder he doesn't know but will play if healthy.

Listen, if he just came out and said, "I'm going to skip training camp and show up for Week 1" we could all move on with our lives, because you just farking know that's what's going to happen.

Yes, but then ESPN's ratings would hinge on A-ROIDs injection home run total. That's no where near as dramatic as a Green Bay beat writer praying/hoping/needing/leaking made up stories about their former 'chosen one.'

Why do ESPN run every Favre story? Because Favre = ratings. People care.. even if they are sick of it, they care and people watch. Same way with Sports Talk. Phones light up the second Brett Favre is mentioned.

However, I don't see Brett Favre on ESPN saying I quit, no I don't, yes I do, I don't know. This was some "source" telling someone he "texted" he was quitting. It's not Favre's fault when he farts people want to figure out what he had for dinner... Same thing with that Kate plus eight minus one divided by 15 woman. She keeps coming back around because people keep sticking the spotlight on her. They eat it up.

Yes, this drives me insane every year, but it isn't driven as much by Favre as it is by us in the public wanting to know every thing Favre does.

we most stop him. we just need a high power rifle and mode of transport to mississippi. one of those days he heads out to ride the tractor in those jeans or to throw with the high school team and he never comes back. problem solved.

oh wait, then ESPN with a couple of days of coverage about the giant farking hole in favre's head, then the cross-country manhunt, then the arrest, then the first court appearance, then the adoring masses giving thanks to ending favre's indecision, then the trial, then the appeal, the the conversion to islam, then the execution... fark it! even in death one cannot escape the power of ESPN's craving to suck on favre. god damn it so much!

Besides, he almost always does come out and refute/confirm the rumors. The point, again, is that he could stop it all by making a decision. He doesn't, and hasn't since 2004 with one exception (07 I think).

I honestly don't think he's capable of making a firm decision on the matter until he feels he has to. And even then I think he probably continues to go back and forth, but is limited to what he can do by that time.

In all likelihood, sadly you are correct. But, a 41 year old coming off surgery has his share of risks too.

Another year older, another step lost.

Honestly, I didn't think it would work last year, made basically the same argument, and was dead wrong.

That doesn't mean it won't happen this year though...

Well, one reason I think he truly can't decide is that I don't think he's capable of keeping a good secret. If he had decided, I think he'd have let it slip out withing 24 hours of deciding. Not to bring up the cliche, but I get the impression that he's more like a 5 year old than most people realize. A 5 year old can't lie about anything. They also can't make decisions regarding the future.

Nah, he would have. The problem they had was they were both under contract and Rodgers was going to want more than a backups pay. No way GB was going to be paying 2 premium QBs wages since they are broke as a city and franchise. Could have been avoided by not signing a then 33 or 34 year old to a 7 year deal at the highest pay in the league and expecting him to not want to finish the deal, but that's spilt milk.

This.

My biggest problem with the whole damn thing is that I believe that ESPN is literally making this BS up to get ratings. If it's just Farve being Douchey Farve, I expect it from him. If it's Farve juicing the Vikings for another $8 million, the part of me that is slightly a Packer fan likes it.

But really all I care about is the Chargers signing VJ and MM.

What team in their right mind would pay 2 premium QB wages, its just not fiscally responsible from a business standpoint. There was much more upside to the Packers going with Rogers than with Favre. For example..their players don't have to worry about this media circus every year anymore. (As for them being broke, they did make a net profit of ~$5 million last year. (up 20% from previous)
