I trained cattle to show at the fair since like age 6 or so. You train them, raise them, and when it's time to sell them, you sell them because that's what you do with cattle. It's a bummer for all of five minutes. But she's going to learn a lot from these experiences, which I don't think you'd understand.

We numbered animals on the farm but named our show animals (Holsteins). I can tell you the name of every one of my show animals, as well as my brother's. It wasn't a big deal that we named them. It was sad the first time one was sold, but not that big a deal. After that, it was a reality that you sell a dairy cow when it's no longer productive. I would imagine it's hard to keep a farm going if you can't grasp a basic fact that there is a time to sell livestock. A kid raised on a farm accepts that pretty quickly, whether the animal is named Joy, or 613. I've never known a farm girl to go vegetarian from naming an animal or otherwise.

I used to think this, but then I started buying beef at the 4h/ffa auction. The fatty ribs smoked and rendered for about 12 hours gives bacon a run for it's money.

When your father forces you to pull dead pigs out of the barn when you are about 8 or 9, you get over the fact that livestock dies pretty quickly. It was just a fact of life.

And, to be honest, I did name some of my pigs, but like above it was usually bacon or ham or something along those lines. Also, it was a different for us because we had about 20 that we conditioned for fair, and would choose the best one the day we took them in, so it is harder to get attached to a faceless animal out of a herd then something that you work with for months.

/But, losing a dog will always make me cry :(

As I said in an earlier post, I have never known a farm girl to go vegetarian. That's for suburbanites.

And I actually can admire the discipline of vegetarians and vegans if they don't get all self righteous about it. I have met a few that don't. But I can tell you that I did not know a single vegetarian in my home town or the surrounding area. When I go back for weddings, there is never a vegetarian option on the RSVP. I live in a college town, so there are plenty here, but that's unheard of back home.

I've lived in farm country on the East Coast and in several parts of the Midwest, and I've known a whole bunch of people who grew up on farms and went vegetarian in their teens or as adults. Most of them women, in fact, now that I think about it.

Not talking about dilettante vegetarians or people who grew up around soybeans and never saw livestock, either. Some people see farm animals every day and decide they don't want to eat them, whether the animals are treated humanely or not.

I'm not making an argument about vegetarianism. I'm just saying that there's no magical rule that people who grow up around livestock never go vegetarian.

Naming livestock is ok, it's also ok to get attached to them, after all you're caring for them and raising them. Then, you kill them respectfully, and thank them for the sacrifice, the circle of life is complete. That's what irks me about those PETA nuts, eating meat is not a sin, a crime, or abnormal, forgetting to respect and honor your food as a once living being, that's the crime. Sadly, with most people living in urban areas, factory farming has become a reality just to keep people fed.
