"It's so unusual looking," he said. "At first I thought it was a possum because of the long snout, but then I noticed it had a big, bushy tail, not a thin, rat-like tail. It's a unique creature."

Yes. Very unique. (new window)

lol. Well played, sir. FYI to Raider_dad, they have black squirrels up in Michigan as well. Seem to be fairly common in those parts.

Yep that's the inhumane society for you. Send us money so we can capture beautiful animals and kill them.

/That having been said, we had an albino squirrel living in our yard a few years ago. We dubbed him Freaky.

So, it looks like you linked to a google image search that seems to be a bunch of different pictures of the same 3 possibly 4 albino racoons.

Raider_dad: I was in LaCrosse WI and saw an all black squirrel , not suggesting they are rare but I had never seen one before.

I suppose "rare" is a relative thing. They are pretty common in some areas, but for people not used to seeing them they are surprising. The really bad thing is that when they move into an area, they tend to steal nuts from other squirrels and really drive down property value.

Raccoons and DEER. Trust me though, if there is ever a story about an albino deer in Tennessee, it's either going to be a pet or dead. All of us seem to hate them.

2010-08-01 08:47:03 AM
Yeah. They're really rare. That's why I've got a whole family of albino (or leucistic,I haven't gotten a really good look at the eyes to tell) racoons living under the porch of my neighbors house. I do agree with the article that it was pretty hard to initially identify as a racoon. No stripes or mask.

For those of you that don't know TN is one of the strictest states in the country about what animals you can or can't have and keeping wild ones. so blame the TWRA, not the trapper guy.

This is kinda strange because most of the rest of the south are like very laxed on the laws.

Aw, man. I was all excited to see a cute raccoon. I read the comments before I clicked the link, though, and now I has a sad :(

I grew up in Michigan - you don't have to tell me the only good deer is a dead deer.

Usually, the black ones don't go that far north.

They're heavily concentrated in the south, especially in urban areas.

Raccoons are very cute animals. They're also a rabies vector and tend to have very little fear of humans, which is one of the reasons they get euthanized. It doesn't help them that they're extremely destructive little shiats. The one in the article kind of looks like a cat with long fingers.

Camouflage, I imagine: if the tail is horizontal, the rings will be vertical and can help the creature blend into vegetation (assuming stalks and such are also vertical).

Meh c'mon be serious, guys. They spread disease, get into all sorts of shiat, attack pets, etc. I'd shoot the cute lil' bastards myself if I didn't live within city limits.

There's a coon or two that swing by my place every evening looking for bits of food my dogs missed. They have absolutely no fear of humans. They just move to a safe distance and wait for you to leave.

If you leave a 1st floor window open they absolutely will come inside and ransack the place.

I read "Albino Radscorpion." and freaked out a little. Those things can be a pain to kill when they sneak up on you while you're fighting a group of Super Mutants.

/Needs to player less video games.
//Or get more sleep.
///Probably both.
