Seriously? They had to pass a law that made this specific action a crime? "Theft" didn't cut it? Would giving a fake name when you check in with a hooker warrant the same charge?

Years ago I was a server and some guy tried to walk out on three large Long Island Iced Teas. I ran down the street and caught him, but he didn't have any money, so I demanded he give me his drivers license, and he could have it back when he brought the cash.

Then I went to Blockbuster and opened an account in his name and rented a shiatload of Sega Genesis games. hehe, good times.

He came back for his license eventually. I don't think I ever returned those games.

Dude, "Defrauding an innkeeper" has been a crime for about 500 years. It's a separate crime, because it isn't really theft (no force or fear), it doesn't usually meet the intent requirement for burglary, and you can't be charged for shoplifting items consumed on the premises. (I guess you could...but you can't really return them, if you get my drift)

I suppose if they'd had some veal and tipped the waitress, it might have been okay.
