Work in a la-z-boy with a built-in toilet, plasma tv and xbox and I'm there.

No, keg beer sucks.

The tap placement seems rather awkward. I'd hit the catch plate or the tap with my leg on a regular basis, resulting in wet pants and wasted beer. Interesting idea, but it needs work.

8 steps to the same result. Total price under $1000

Step 1: Buy a used arcade cabinet

Step 2: Buy a minifridge

Step 3: Build a cheap MAME PC and drop in a decent LCD

Step 4: Buy some buttons, sticks and a USB to arcade controller at Groovy Game Gear, or Ultimarc

Step 5: Acquire ROM images

Step 6: Buy keg tap gear

Step 7: Buy Keg

Step 8: Install!

I'm up to step 5. Need to do some more detail work on my cabinet, add a few more buttons for MAME control options, then get a marquee and some lighting in place. But it games quite nicely, and I already had the computer parts.

stuhayes2010: No, keg beer sucks.

Imagine someone standing at the machine pictured on the site, playing a game.

Now imagine where you have to go to get a beer while that person is playing.

Now calculate the odds that the person playing the game is of the appropriate sex to make getting that beer not suck.

/or just imagine you're about to reach a record-breaking kill screen when your bud cock-punches you for a refill of natty light.

stuhayes2010: No, keg beer sucks.

My homebrewing is on hold while I deal with less-than-ideal living arrangements at present. But when I move again - hopefully soon - I will promptly return to brewing.

I've never used kegs, but thought about getting a small kegging system to try out. They're kind of an investment though, even for a starter kit.

Are you saying the finished quality of the kegged beer is not as good as bottle-conditioned beer?

I've always wanted to build my own MAME cabinet but I always spend any money I wouldn't feel bad about putting into one on one of my other gaming options. I've got the massive ROM library already.

If I had the money I'd buy a pre-built one, honestly this one is spiffy but I don't have any use for a keg holder and a cabinet just as good without the fridge would probably run half the cost, if not less. These guys seem pretty proud of themselves.

It is nice, though.

I'd be pretty damn proud too, if I could charge $3500 for a simple cabinet like that. I got my former SFII cabinet for $200 locally, which was a great price. It needed a repaint, and a lot of the interior needed to be sanded down because it had been repurposed so many times that things were really ragged in there. But, it was cheap, it's authentic, and it works great. Definitely a project I suggest people with any interest take on.

Take it with a grain of salt. His statement is merely an opinion stated as if it were fact. I prefer my beer on tap. I brew my own and prefer to put it in a keg simply because it's SO much easier and in the long run much less expensive.

That's exactly where the urinal/fleshlight should be. Beer needs to go in cooled cup-holders just above the control sticks.

Real beer comes out of a cask, keg or barrel. Not a bottle.

Well it does in soviet UKia anyway. The bottled stuff is a reasonable imitation at best, it never tastes the same as fresh from the tap.

Of course we don't pressurise kegs with CO2 either.

My buddy built a MAME machine with an old cabinet (but used a real Arcade Monitor)... he was talking tonight about selling it and making a new one.. needless to say he got this link : )

Ta-da!

lh4.ggpht.com

It currently has a Core 2 Duo 2.53Ghz machine in it with a couple gigs of RAM and a Radeon 4850 in it, but that's really overkill. I picked up an Asus eeeBox with a dedicated 256M Radeon chip for video, and will be putting that in there sometime in the next couple days when I can bother to set up all the software on it. Then, I'll also be upgrading it to use a 24.5" monitor I have, which is the widest I can fit under the glass.

I'm running GameEx as the frontend, which tends to work pretty well even if configuration can be really obnoxious at times.

No keg in there, and this cabinet might not actually be suitable as it dips in at the back in the 'Tempest Z' style. You'll probably want what they called a 'Tempest' case, which is just like mine only without that dip.

Real arcade monitors are a great idea, but I like the flexibility of an LCD for other purposes. The obnoxious part however, is that you can only typically find inexpensive 4:3 aspect LCD's at 19" or lower, and an arcade monitor will typically be 24". The display shown in the picture above is a 19", and the 24.5" LCD I'm putting in is a widescreen that gives me just about the same amount of vertical screen size.

Plus, the power draw with an LCD and an eeeBox should be low enough that I can keep it running 24/7 without breaking the bank, at least with the monitor sleeping after a couple hours. The one drawback I just realized to switching to the eeeBox is that I'll have a tougher time powering CFL's for the marquee than I would have if I just dropped them off a PC's power supply like I have in there now.

Total price under $20 assuming you have a fridge and a computer.

1. Buy beer
2. Put it in your fridge
3. Get the cold beer out as needed, and play games on your computer

Certainly effective, but not nearly as awesome. Last time I got drunk and played games on my computer, I almost got banned from a TF2 server.

Lots of systems are built with X-Arcade sticks as a base. Fortunately, I was able to get sticks for $8.50 each that work great, and buttons for about $3 apiece. A controller board was... I think around $50 and had to be imported from the UK, but it worked out really well and just plugs into a USB port.

I've watched too many poor people and businesses get screwed by unethical "computer guys" to have any sympathy for someone selling something at -that- kind of markup. An honest job for an honest wage, some of us still believe in that.

Of course, I haven't had a steady job in way too long. Might be part of my problem. That and Nevada's crap employment numbers.

stuhayes2010: No, keg beer sucks.

Yeah, it does. Why is it whenever I drink beer from a keg, I get horribly sick and wake up with the hang over of death? It doesn't have to be a keg at a party, it also happens if I drink draft beer in a bar. I can drink a case of canned or bottled beer and have no problem.

This is a question I've been trying to find an answer to for years. Some people say it's just me, but why me and not my brothers?

I have a keg 'fridge thing, had it for a few years and never use it. I should sell the damn thing, but it was given to me by a friend who has since died, and I just can't part from it.

This is often caused by lines that haven't been cleaned. I homebrew, and keg my own beer, have for years. I have heard this comment a number of times, from a number of people. Talked to them after they have drank my beer, and heard a different story, no headache. Bacteria and molds yeast and beer stone grow in beer lines, they need to be cleaned with

Unless the beer you are drinking is bottle conditioned, IT IS keg beer. Most beer is kegged, and bottled from there. The only difference is the size of the keg.

I've been kegging my beer for a few years now and I'll never go back. There really is no comparison to home brew in a bottle. You can also keg some other interesting brews too. Try this:

Make 5 gallons of Minute Maid lemonaide from frozen concentrate.
Add 5 pounds of sugar
Add champagne yeast.
Ferment to your desired alcohol content, keg and carbonate.

Makes a decent Mike's Hard Lemonaide substitute for about 2 bucks a gallon.

This is good wit any fruit juice without preservatives as well. So far I have done apple and cherry, with strawberry and grapefruit in secondary right now.
