Well... as sure as I am sitting here typing this, the DVD will be a relic within 25 years, so I guess we have no choice.

There is a significant portion of the population that simply cannot view 3D, myself included. While this isn't a "big" percent number or even, likely, a full percent, companies will not sacrifice being able to cater to us by completely dispensing with 2D screens.

So, basically, 3D won't be a pervasive content until it can be done without using binocular vision to fool depth perception, and until it can be done without glasses.

And, even then, it's still not cheap to film for. I Seriously doubt it will ever become a pervasive TV content delivery method.

That's great. I've got cassette tapes that I refuse to get rid of for sentimental reasons (*my first independent music release available in stores!) but I haven't had a cassette deck for over 5 years.

Anecdotal/long-tail stories are great, but unlike vinyl (which has djs, purists and a certain romantic cachet) there aren't too many vcr purists and the local "SUPA CHEAP VHS discount" store just shuttered.

yes, but HDDVD and Bluray will both lose to streaming. The studios can fight it but that is the direction things are going. Most people will give up on 5.1/7.1 sound and 1080p for the ability to instantly watch their video while not having to deal with physical media and the added price.

Disney pretty much has every option covered with their deluxe Blu-Ray releases. For a bit more than the regular Blu-Ray version, they typically give you the option of buying a version with with the Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital copy versions, plus a code to stream the movie from their website.

Also, a big portion of the US has broadband that really isn't up to the task of HD video streaming. Not everyone has a 35 Mbps FIOS connection like I do. Also, with a 42" plus sized HD set, it is VERY easy to see compression artifacts on streamed videos. On any big action movie with a lot of fast motion on the screen, you need the higher bitrate Blu-Ray provides. With prices dropping quickly on the movies and players, I think most people will want to keep a Blu-Ray collection of their favorite movies for the best experience.

Cue in either that scene from "Paycheck" or "Wild Palms".

3D will never catch on if they don't come up with a way to do it without glasses or other shenanigans. That technology simply does not exist, so we might as well be arguing about when flying cars will catch on, or something. "Man, in ten years you won't see anyone without a replacement robobrain!"

Trump card: Monocular vision. One eye usable at a time. I can switch back and forth, no "natural" depth perception whatsoever. Happens to a lot of people who are cross-eyed or w/ astigmatism, unfortunately.

Fair enough, but why would it be a win situation for me when I undoubtedly pay more for a TV that does the exact same thing, for me?

I saw my first 3D TV in real life today. It was farking blurry. They had the TV on the floor and no glasses, illustrating how useless the damned technology is.

I was wrong about two-sided LEDs, that's something else. The 3DS is hard to describe. It has motion control built in, so you tilt it and that causes a 3D scene within the usual 2D LED image to rotate. It's an interesting effect, but it's not really any different from rotating an object with an analog stick or a mouse. I'm not saying it's not a good feature, but it isn't "3D without glasses" and it's not applicable to the idea of a 3D TV unless you feel like picking up and rotating your TV while you watch it.

A 3D TV/theatre "without glasses" does not exist in any form.

What am I looking for? I see 3D geometry with some camera panning. You can't even see the 3D effect in that video.

You see double images. The screen is sending one image to the left eye and one image to the right eye. Unlike large tv, It's possible to create 3D this way on the handheld because of the small screen size.

The TV isn't "3D". It's the media that has the encoding and data for the infrared signals that has the "3D". They don't change the screens or the projectors at cinemas when they have 3D movies. The information is in the bluray and then they set up an infrared transmitter on top of the screen that is interpreted by the glasses (try covering the small window between your lenses, you'll see as if you didn't have the glasses).

So, they are just selling the glasses? Those 2kg, bulky, nose bending glasses?

We could all pitch in and buy just one 3D TV, a REALLY big one. Then we could charge those that didn't contribute to pay to come over and watch a movie. But then we are going to need a really big room with lots of seats which we'll have to put at an angle so everyone can see. We are all going to want to have snacks, so maybe we can get some folks to stay out front of the room and make food and stuff. But then we'll have to pay them. While we are paying them for cooking, we might as well pay them to clean the big room and the crapper. This is going to be a big endeavor so we'll need someone to run the place.

The 3DS uses autostereoscopy. It uses a screen with a lenticular-type coating, so that you see one image if you view it slightly from the left, and a different image if you view it slightly from the right. If you hold it straight in front of you, your two eyes see the two different images, creating the illusion of 3D. So it's wrong to say that the motion control in the 3DS is used to generate the 3D effect, or that you need to tilt the unit or move your head to see the effect. In fact, if you want to make a real criticism of the 3DS, it's that two of its features (motion sensing and 3D) probably won't be able to be used at the same time -- since if you're moving the 3DS around significantly, you'll probably be unable to keep your head in the right place, so you'll screw up the 3D effect.

Wow, that's stupid. I wonder why you can't see the 3D effect. In the article's video I couldn't see the 3D effect of those TVs either!

Could you seriously not see how the image viewed off to the side was definitely split up into two images or did you purchase a 3D TV and now have to justify the everliving hell out of your purchase?

I'm an optical tech. I've been making clip-on 3D glasses for those of us who already wear glasses and hate wearing a second, bigger pair on our nose at the same time.

I can't really market them (and I'm surprised the 3D tech companies don't) because I'm taking 3D glasses from the theater and altering them to the purpose. So it's not my tech, nor really my materials. I suppose I could charge people for the service, though.

Unfortunately, the glasses for the 3D-HDTVs require being wired into the system, and I can't figure out any way to streamline those ugly, stupid things.

The main difference is that I can remember people being excited about HD when it was a new technology. The economy was doing well, people had money to burn, and everyone wanted one because the screen was a lot crisper looking.

I have literally never met even a single person who is the least bit interested in 3DTV. These morons are trying to force the technology down our throats, and they are going to be biatchslapped when we refuse to buy it. And by it I mean both the 3D televisions and the continued notion that we have to define our self-worth on how up-to-date our gadgets are during a farking recession.
