And unless you've been living under a rock the only ones you haven't heard of are searching for a range of numbers ('LowerLimit..UpperLimit') and the search related terms operator ('~')

That is funny, I was about to say "Most of these have been around for years, but I did learn about the number ranges and tilde operator, so, guess I did learn something".

So, are those two pretty new, or just well hidden?

Yeah, but you still can't ask google if it's gay, so off to askjeeves.com I go.

Hi subby, welcome to the internet. You're about 15 years late to the party, but the keg's in the kitchen.

2010-07-31 03:32:17 PM
You know, some of these I actually didn't know. However, Google has so many little tools built right in that none of them surprised me. In fact, when doing a simple query, I often fully expect that that Google will provide me the answer directly. And it usually does.

I concur.

Surprised that that the google earth flight simulator hasn't gotten a mention yet.

*Crap, that should have been a quote about the flight simulator.

They forgot about turning filter off and search image for "Uncensored Japanese Lesbians"

2010-07-31 04:37:44 PM
Not only did I know about all of these. I know that they forgot one of the most useful ones.

lets you search for pages by strings contained in their URLs

Did we really need to see pictures of those?

One thing they finally added was a way to get less shopping sites. You try to look up some spec on hardware and you get a million links to places that sell the item or "review" the item which is just another link to a site with no reviews or show you a list of prices for the item or tell you which stores sell the item or tell you where you can order the item... nothing actually useful in any way.

-inurl:htm -inurl:html intitle:"index of" "Last modified" mp3

I'd never use that one myself, but I've heard good things. Also

-inurl:htm -inurl:html intitle:"index of" "Last modified" jpg

Could be an interesting search as well.

2010-07-31 05:00:39 PM
I don't need Google to tell me what the traffic is going to be like at any given moment.

For that, I turn to the word "SHIATTY" what I got written on my wall.

I kind of look at these 3 as the same "kind" of thing.
they are all calculations.
currency is a type of unit conversion ...

not that I am complaining

That's way cool since I've been pondering writing a shell script to let me search from the command line. Being lazy pays off for me again YES!!!.

They forgot to Google "recursion."

2010-07-31 05:45:48 PM
For more Google fun, do a search for "recursion" or "anagram."

Anyone know any others?

Damn you, jgi

Yeah. I found those on my own just typing in things like "3 meters feet" or the like, hoping to use those as keywords to find some dedicated conversion page, but Google just gave me the answer.

Same with the weather, I'd be going on vacation and type in "Toronto weather" or something hoping to just find a page on it, but Google would directly answer.

My own niche "hack" (not that it even amounts to one, really) is, if I'm searching for something in Japanese but the word or topic is far more popular in Chinese, usually I can kill all the Chinese results by just adding は (a Japanese-only grammar bit) to the search string. It's faster than going through the "show me pages in [language] only" dialog thing.

2010-07-31 05:53:02 PM
jgi: They forgot to Google "recursion."

Heh. Took me a moment, that doesn't work on the Japanese site.

I have to say though generally I'm quite impressed with the real "did you mean...?" suggestions I get in both Japanese and English, if I google for something I dimly recall as the right word usually Google prompts me for what turns out to be the "oh yeah duh, of course I did" real thing.

I'm fairly certain there's a perl module to do google searches.

I believe I used it once a few years back when I was writing perl based AIM bots.

Doric: hmmmmm..

Well, that's a paid advertisement.

It looks like they don't honor the -clause in the ads, that's interesting. Still, at least those are limited and just right at the top.

Really? How do you do that?

I did a google search on "search google exclude shopping sites" and the top result was a link to google support saying you can't do that.

I tried using the "Free" GOOG-411 service this week, and it's now asking me to sign up for a monthly fee of ~10 bucks. I am disappoint.

one I discovered today

you can translate text by typing translate: "your text here" to *language*

example

translate: "Once upon a time" to french

2010-07-31 10:01:10 PM
lerry: translate: "Once upon a time" to french

I guess you don't need the colon and quotes, just type it like this.

translate once upon a time to french

actualhuman: And unless you've been living under a rock the only ones you haven't heard of are searching for a range of numbers ('LowerLimit..UpperLimit') and the search related terms operator ('~')

Yeah, those were the only ones new to me.

~ is pretty cool, though.

i don't know why they didn't do the "search for something and put 'index of' in your keywords"

didn't even know the intitle: thing, since if you're finding a page that is an "index of", that's just going to be up there on its results page regardless.

"nds rom index of"

"subby's mom naked index of"
