I prefer landscapes myself, but I don't go around vandalising still lifes just because I don't care for them. While the offense may seem trivial, the underlying principle is not. This woman needs to be given a nice unpleasant stint of picking up trash off the side of the highway, about 160 hours worth.

"I told him it was inappropriate to have this on a window," she said of the display.

Well, look at Miss Community Standards, deciding all on her own what is appropriate as art.

At the time, she said she still had the underwear and has painted it to actually look like art.

OOOOHHHH! Underwear must have paint to qualify as "looking like art".

I think this lady has an over-inflated idea of her own talent and her authority to judge art.

the Rowan Arts Council: Our Mission: To provide opportunities for Rowan County organizations, individuals and activities that advocate arts and culture. This will be achieved through the creation of sustainable relationships and partnerships that promote excellence in the community as a whole

seems they don't want a sustainable relationship with the underpants individual. from their really professional website (new window) at blogger.com. oh, and it's complete with annoying music you can't turn off.

this woman is a pretentious twit.

The term 'underwear art' just brought about horrid flashbacks of the swap.avi video. Damn you, subby, I have 8 hours of work ahead of me...

/Off to curl into a ball and whimper in the corner of my room

"I may not know art but I know what I like" isn't a license to go and deface (or outright steal) that which you do not like. This twatwaffle got what she deserved. Do I think this is art? Not really, though my judgement is worth nothing. He wants to call it art, it's art I guess. I do think this whole story is ridiculously hilarious.

Miss Community Standards should be glad that he didn't consider a used condom taped to his window "art". Wait for it, that could be next.

Don't get your panties in a knot over this.

The underwear moved her to obsess about it to the point she stole it. Then she took it home and enjoyed it some more. It made her feel, and not just briefly. I think it's art.

$5 value? This means most paintings are worth a couple bucks for fabric and paint. Jeez, worn socks can go for over $100 on Ebay.

I agree.

"I told him it was inappropriate to have this on a window," she said of the display.

Who deemed her the authority on what is and is not appropriate and further, gave her the power to act upon it?

The American Self-Secure House Owners & Legal Executors Society?.

Well, Ann Caldwell Cave knows art - she's the executive director of the Rowan Arts Council.

HAhahahahahhahahhHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHhahahahAHHhaHAHHAHAHahHAhHAhHAHahHAHAhaHAhA H AHa she knows jack shiat and her position proves it given the fact that ANYONE that actually gets appointed to an executive position on any council got there by being the lowest common denominator.

She also doesn't know anything about personal property law. I like how she hired a lawyer. What will her defense be? "I like to take the law into my own hands after interpreting it based on my own desires rather than the individual rights of all citizens"?

Don't she know? All art is painted on the stomachs of fat guys dese days.

"At the time, she said she still had the underwear and has painted it to actually look like art."

Okay, so we know she's a pretentious biatch who considers herself an art expert. She's executive director of the Rowan Arts Council. That means she almost certainly has pissed off both some artists and some rich art patrons.

I say the next time there is a big auction for charity, he shows up and sells off the underwear she painted, complete with a sign giving her credit for painting the underwear. Some rich art fan who she's pissed off can buy it and display it in a window for all to see, the charity can make some money, and she can be majorly embarrassed for, well, more or less forever.

That's got a lot of win going for it.

There's a certain amount of what is normatively considered "art" that even knowledgeable people might not care for. For example, I don't care for Picasso, but I understand something of what he was trying to do or express and identify it as art. (My tastes run more to Impressionists, Keith Herring, and some of the better anime; but tastes and art should be reckoned as different aspects.)

Can underwear be considered art? I think that it can. Having a few nice panties is affordable to women of excellent taste but modest means, as is handbags, posters, and kitchenware.

It seems that Ms. Cave should have recognized the possibility of art being more inclusive than she apparently thinks it is. Perhaps men's boxers or briefs are mostly plain and unimaginative; but we should be open to the possibility of artistic men's lingerie.

This is the kind of story you'd normally see in Japan, only it'd be a guy stealing some girl's underwear and he'd do it because he DOES like it.

except she'd probably not get the irony and be flattered that her 'work' was so appreciated and become more insufferable in the future.

Seconded. She sounds like a jesus freak. I bet she wears underwear, despite being offended by them for some pseudo-puritannical reasoning.

I'm performing tonight at an art gallery for the closing of a show of my artwork. I'm going to be wearing a kilt. I wonder if the gallery owner would mind if at the start of my show I reached up under my kilt, removed some underwear and taped it to the window of the gallery in homage.

To be honest, the underwear ripped straight from a school girl's body is so much fresher than what you can get from the vending machines.

Read that as underwater art. Thought to myself, "Well that sounds interesting, I wonder if you need to scuba dive to see it, or if it's in a tank with a viewing window."

/disappointed.

I did the same and then googled underwater art to ease the disappointment.

What underwater art might look like. (new window)
