I see a free-spirited little gymnast. You see a pole-humping kindergartner.

Who is the sick one?

FTFA: "I just had a baby six months ago and I'm hoping she'll start to learn pole-dancing as soon as she can," says Tammy Morris, owner of Tantra Fitness. "Kids love the pole. If anything, it's hard to get them off it because they're such naturals."

Actually most schools already have a form of stripper training: it's called the cheerleading squad.

Your job is to keep em off the pole.

I am disgusted.

College students these days can actually make their own major studying video games as literature. By the time these kids turn 18 they'll be able to get a Ph.D. in pole dancing studies, burying their parents in a couple hundred grand of debt.

I'm trying really hard to see this as a fun activities for the kiddies but everything I've ever seen about pole dancing has been sexually charged.

Even the pole dancing books, classes, & movies for the adult classes has been oriented along the lines of "Look! You can get healthy AND be sexy at the same time!"

When I hear about a child pole dancing class the first thought in my head is going to be "gee, this over-sexualization of minors is getting really bad now".

2010-07-30 11:35:59 PM
Why not get your kid into hoop, or poi spinning, or something? At least then they can look forward to playing with fire.

Wonder how many of them go to catholic school.

2010-07-30 11:40:58 PM
Why not? We've already got 7-year olds dancing to Beyonce (new window).

I have no problem with this.
First off, I have no kids, so judge as you will.
For a 9 yr old, it's a gymnastic exercise, similar to the parallel bars. It's YOUR mind that makes it dirty. What if it was a 9 yr old boy doing exercises on a vertical pole? What if was part of Marine training to be able to do these kinds of gymnastic maneuvers? What if they had uneven parallel bars in strip clubs? Would that ruin the summer Olympics for you?

Get over it. Tell your own kid not to swing around on a pole. Leave everybody else's kids alone.

It sort of undermines your message of it being an asexual form of excercise when you name the classes "Bellylicious, Sexy Flexy, Pussycat Dawls and Promiscuous Girls". Just saying

2010-07-30 11:43:53 PM
"kids love the pole" that's what Michael Jackson said.

2010-07-30 11:44:20 PM
current bias

do you think dudes went to the ballet back in the 1800's because they enjoyed people prancing about to classical (then contemporary) music?

no

they went to see young slender teenage girls, prance about in tight clothing.

It's a cognitive bias to always think society is getting more liberal, or stupid etc. In reality it comes and goes in waves.

2010-07-30 11:44:26 PM
No, that's not nauseating at all.

*BAAAAAAAARF* What were we talking about again?

A little girl playing on the monkey bars - free-spirited little gymnast.

A little girl on a stripper pole, which was invented purely for sexual titillation - yeah, sorry, that's messed up.

Is this a marketing ploy to sell viagra for kids (new window)?

2010-07-30 11:47:00 PM
I'm not sure how appropriate it is for teen and below, but the exercise style of using the "pole" is being used widely now. Plenty of places and dvds to be bought, that it makes it legitimate.

/I swear, I went to the strip club to check out their exercise discipline.

//But seriously, it is a good way to exercise, (and legitimate now), if not popular from it's origin.

My point is that you can't wipe away years of associating pole dancing with strippers & sex.

Although in the end it really isn't any of my business. If the parents want to put their kids in classes like this then they will have to do the job of educating their children about their bodies, their sexualities, & what is appropriate or inappropriate in life. Regardless of how innocent the class is there's still going to be people who are going to hear "I took pole dancing lessons" & make their assumptions over the class & the girl for taking them. Those kids will need to be able to deal with that.

The only thing that makes me a little worried is that some of those parents might be the "OMG! My kid is sooo trendy & edgy by doing this- they're just kids so I don't have to worry about talking to them about how others might perceive this or the stereotyping surrounding it!" They don't have to graphically explain the history of stripping but they should be prepared to explain all of this.

Well, that & the idea of a kid pole dancing is really icky sounding.

That's fine. Just don't cry at us when your kid tells the teacher at school that she pole dances after school and get bullied for being a slut until she's 19.

Most of the strippers I knew were in med school. It was better than racking up a ton of student loan debt.

You are not up to speed dear. There are a number of DVD exercise oriented videos that are actually... (drum roll) exercise oriented. Buy one. You might actually please yourself without offending you.

I think the real money would be opening up a teen pole dancing class and a bar next door with a two way mirror separating the two places.
/ No girls, that mirror is just so you can see if you are doing it right.

Who gives a shiat? Even if it is sexually suggestive, what business is it of yours, unless you happen to also be nine? Not your kid = not your problem.
