So shorty before I die I can get new knees?

2010-07-30 05:03:34 PM
Too late.

I'm going into hospital for a hip replacement in 2-3 weeks.

Yes you can. And maybe the new knees will make you less short too.

Interesting, especially for arthritis suffers like moi.

I would like to place my order for new toes, two thumbs and a knee.

Unfortunately, the new joints will be covered with a soft white fur.

Or fortunately, if you happen to be a furry...

I know! Hospitals are really amazing aren't they!

/It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

Thanks subby. Can't wait to read the fulltext at work.

I love how the article says that it's "giving hope to arthritis sufferes".

I think any arthritis sufferer is old enough to know that no huge medical breakthroughs like this really occur in a timeframe that would benefit the people they are meant to help. It's successive generations that get our wisdom.

So sure, maybe hope, if all arthritics are altruists.

With my level of income and advances in modern science, it's hard to believe I can't live to be 250-300.

Bah this is old stuff. Besides Sonic Hedgehog can grow any new limb you want. I'm waiting for them to just use it on chickens. Imagine a six legged chicken. Makes KFC execs cream I imagine. Now only if we can make them functional and not all hangy like stumpy here.

As someone who has arthritis in his hip at age 39, this makes me very happy to hear.

Dr. says I'll need it replaced in 6 years, finger crossed!

Would take that long to get it through the FDA if they started right NOW, and if the fundies didn't kneejerk react to the words "stem Cells"

Trust me, you are gonna end up with titanium and Teflon, but trust me, you will feel a hell of a lot better.

I dunno, man - I know you can grow joints with seed-cells, but stem-cells? That shiat ain't good for nothing.

Well, if we manage to work around our energy/resource crunch and get rid of people's deathoid prejudice, I see no reason why not.

This study didn't use embryonic stem cells, it used the rabbit's own stem cells. I'm assuming that any fundies who see this would cheer it on loudly, and use it to bash embryonic stem cells as less effective and unnecessary.

/they might be right.

Pluripotent != totipotent...although IPS cells were a HUGE breakthrough, they still can't do everything that embryonic stem cells can. It's possible that technology will proceed such that embryonic stem cells will be obsolete before they even get used, but we're not there yet.

Certainly not, but the drooling deluded fanbois that jizz themselves everytime there's a repeat of yet another kerosene-filled tube doing exactly the same thing as 50 years ago is tiresome.

WHERE ARE THE RESULTS YOU farkERS!? There are people suffering RIGHT NOW because you are too afraid to study the HARD stuff: biology. Too hard for you, Space Nutters?

A few molecules doing a dance too much to understand? Want to launch firecrackers instead? Waste of time.

Where's the will and money to understand how matter becomes life? Where's the focused, nation-wide will to fix this god damn random mess of diseases and genetic abnormalities we call our body?

It's easier to send tin cans into orbit. That's why.

I thought they chose to do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard. Boy was JFK wrong. Space Nutters do the easy stuff over, and over, and over, and over again.

Meanwhile there are people in pain, kids dying, all kinds of crap happening. What's the answer? Oh, let's launch a camera for 8000$!!! yay! we is smert!

That's the problem. We're still stuck at the gadget level. Where's the bio age? Where's the biotech?

Too afraid, geeks? Too much in your comfort zone? Rockets and dying and 10-20 years of useful life followed by a slow decay of your mind and body are enough for you?

How do you expect to see anything the universe contains when you live like a mayfly?

Still waiting for some goddam hair, scientists.

So glad that I kept my sons umbilical cord blood when I had him.. Those stem cells could be priceless to him or possibly myself some day.
