FTA: "In addition to organic matter and disinfectants, pool waters contain sweat, hair, skin, urine, and consumer products such as cosmetics and sunscreens from swimmers."

And that is why I refuse to go into a public pool. Every time I see someone in a public pool come up to the surface and spit water out...ick.

Didn't EVEN bother to read the article in the search for a catchy headline, eh?

You know they put that chemical in pools that turns purple if you urinate in the water.

Great, first sunscreen is dangerous and can cause cancer, and now pools!

Good thing I'm a nerd that sits inside all day, or I might be at risk.

Personally I love peeing in pools and will fight any ban that Obama tries to enforce.

Yeah, I doubt very many pool-urinaters are under the mistaken impression that the act is allowable as specifically stated in the rule book.

Negative health outcomes can occur when disinfection byproducts form reactions with organic matter in swimming pool water

Um, duh. Isn't that the reason we put it there in the first place?

Just wanted to point out that the article should include hot tubs.... same chemicals if not more. Good thing I couldn't spend that much time in one until the kids grew up. My only issue was at a Holiday Inn where I once stayed that gave me one hell of a rash after a 30 minute dip. I'm guessing they needed more chlorine, or needed to change the water more often.

/Haven't used a hot tub I haven't maintained myself since.

I like the way you think. On the other hand, 10 years from now they will probably be saying that a pool full of urine and sun screen actually kills cancer. Go figure.

We have a lot of nice lakes around here, my company has a great private cove and stand of cabins about 45 mins from my house that I can rent for $5 per night. My wife and I use that a lot, but I would still sell out everything and move to Jax Beach if I could just find a job there...

Don't worry. The moment these pools make enough people sick that insurance companies notice it's taking a toll on their coffers, law makers will go to work on the problem.

As a pool inspector, getting a kick... Seriously, each pool just depends on the maintenance person. Is there an onsite guy who works on the pool every day, or is a company there twice a week to dump some sodium hypochlorite in the pool and leave? I wouldn't get in most of the pools I see, and under no circumstances would I get in a public spa. Listen to one talk on recreational water illnesses and you will feel the same way.

We were in Oklahoma City at a LaQuinta last Saturday. It was freaking hot and I wanted to hit the pool. No dice...there were at LEAST fifteen teenagers swimming in the tiny puddle they called a pool. I don't like swimming in any public pool if there is more than a couple of other people in it. Those little shiatheads were there for the rest of the day.

/Hubby had to sit on me to keep from throwing a box of soap in it from our third floor balcony.

//FWIW, we got half off the room thanks to an unplanned 3am wake up call. "Yeah, I'll go find Joe...HEY, JOE!!! WHERE THE FARK ARE YOU!!!"

Since it's considered acceptable unless stated otherwise. o_0

Chemicals!? Oh noes!

You might want to use a term that's a little more specific. Everything you touch, breathe, consume, and are composed of are chemicals.

I know what you mean my friend... the rural way is for me, but my job skills tend to be elsewhere. Can't make a living these days skinning Beaver pelts.

Even with the current state of the economics I'm not starving, but I sure would have liked a different lifestyle.

Yeah but he only means the BAD chemicals, you know, the BAD ones. That are bad no matter what. There's no such thing as a safe exposure, because all chemicals are BAD. BAD BAD BAD

Could be different ones if you use other methods of disinfecting, like ozone. Now I'm just waiting for research on the chemical byproducts of this stuff.

Like that deadly Di-hydrogen monoxide. It has killed more people than any other chemical in history.
