That's almost as bad as "DelMarVa", the uvula-shaped piece of land on the east side of the Chesapeake.

"I've been to hell. I spell it. I spell it D M V"

As being a NoVA resident I can say with absolute certainty that this author can suck a big ol' DMV.

2010-07-30 06:47:36 PM
Calling it just "DC" is too hard?

2010-07-30 06:48:26 PM
It's a Leper colony

2010-07-30 06:49:28 PM
I have the perfect name for it. Alas, the Beetle Bailey strip already has the rights to "Camp Swampy."

2010-07-30 06:51:15 PM
So when you go there, you have to stand in a loooooooooooooooong line to take a number, and wait a looooooooooooooong time for your number to be called, to be told that you are at the wrong window, and to sit your ass back down and wait for your number to be called again (or not) only to then be told that you do not have the right piece of paper so you'll need to come back tomorrow?

Sounds like fun.

2010-07-30 06:51:26 PM
Sounds about right. A bunch of Marion Barry appointees wasting your time and pumping out similarly-minded kids.

2010-07-30 06:52:10 PM
Really? The rest of America just calls it "the asshole".

2010-07-30 06:53:39 PM

I dont associate DC/Maryland/Virginia as fun, hip, or pleasant. Whats the deal here? First Time tooting NYs horn, now Washington post is playing its skin flute. That entire area just loves the smell of its fecal matter

This must be an American thing. The worst lineup I've ever been in was in downtown Toronto. It took me a whole 30 minutes to renew my license. Then I moved to a small town. I was second in line the second I walked in the door, and the woman who served me was friendly, and helpful, and downright chipper.

2010-07-30 07:14:53 PM
Hey! You just leave Maryland out of this!

You can call the rest VD.

2010-07-30 07:19:05 PM
Um that's been the nickname for a while now. What's new about it?

2010-07-30 07:22:06 PM
took me under an hour both times in Alexandria VA, just go to the ones that are slightly off the beaten path.. AND NOT THE ONE IN THE MALL ON SATURDAY MORNING. SERIOUSLY. Springfield Mall is NOT that awesome to wait hours in.

/should know, worked there.
//and Landmark
///wish i'd have had slashies for some customers there...

So.... waiting in ridiculously long lines all day, and dealing with stifling, unsympathetic bureaucracy?

Sounds about right.

No, No it isn't. Because of various organizations I'm in, I've had to rub elbows with damn near every hipster, scene-maker, goth, wannabe, yuppie, buppie, asshole, cletus, sporto, dweeb, geek, slut and motorhead in the tri-state area and never ONCE have I heard this term used

/they all think I'm a righteous dude

Slow news day at the WP?

People have been using this for years. It picked up thanks to twitter and radio.

Trendy new nickname?

The escorts on Craigslist and Backpage have been using this abbreviation for years!

...uh... so I have been told.

Hey, look, over there!

How about 'No, I live in VA, fark you.' instead?

VA may be messed up, but it's a distinctly different variety apart from DC and MD.

A former classmate of mine was always quick to remind people that NOVA had always been occupied by Union forces and therefore it was separate and distinct from the rest of the Commonwealth.

But I will grant you that NOVA is nonetheless neither D.C. nor Maryland.

nicotommer: DC denizens should not be allowed to name things, ever. Make another city vote for a nickname.

But then they'd be whinging about "naming without representation", the farking "taxation without representation" plates are bad enough

2010-07-30 08:45:56 PM
It's just a suburb of the massive metropolis of Bosnywash.

2010-07-30 08:46:28 PM
Back in the day, we called it the Department of Mothervuckers.

2010-07-30 08:51:29 PM
It's familiar to listeners of black-oriented radio stations such as WKYS-FM and WPGC-FM, whose DJs decorate their patter with mentions of it. It also pops up as geographical shorthand ("DMV man seeks woman") on Craigslist, the classified-ad Web site.

Yo, DMV fo' life, homie g.

Representin' in tha hizhouse!

AzDownboy: That's almost as bad as "DelMarVa", the uvula-shaped piece of land on the east side of the Chesapeake.

Except that people actually use the name "DelMarva" to refer to the eastern shore. I've never heard anybody refer to the Washington metro area as "DMV".

2010-07-30 10:02:13 PM
They could've called MVD ... Oh wait; that's 45 miles north in Essex !

I think it's a DC, Maryland, Virginia thing. A couple of months ago, I walked into a branch of the Ohio BMV and was served almost immediately. I was able get new plates, renewed my license and was out the door in 15 minutes.

2010-07-30 10:14:17 PM
Obviously no one here listens to 92Q in Baltimore or WKYS in DC. Both stations have been calling it "The DMV" for years now. I'm pretty sure I even heard 98rock say it once or twice, but I'm sure they were just making fun of the hip-hop stations.
