I don't understand why you have to give up part of your culture to blend in. Are these 2 things mutually exclusive? You don't have to give up speaking your native language in order to learn English. I love seeing someone get all upset because other people are speaking Spanish within her earshot, even though they're not speaking to or about her. I can only assume that she's upset because either A. she's paranoid that they're talking about her; or B. she's a nosy biatch who wants to eavesdrop on strangers' conversations.

FTR, I don't become annoyed by people speaking other languages just out and about. But if you expect to do business & participate in government programs, at least know enough to have a conversation. I'm not asking for fluency. Just give it a shot.

Oh, I agree - if you expect to get by in mainly English speaking country, you're gonna have to learn English. But when I worked at a restaurant, I would see dining room staff get pissed that kitchen staff was speaking Spanish amongst themselves in the break room. And in thrift stores, I've seen a woman get mad about a Mexican family speaking Spanish amongst themselves. The only logical reasons I can think of that it would upset someone paint the person getting upset in a pretty poor light.

When your "culture" is extremely primitive, and you want to move somewhere that is actually civilized, why shouldn't you assimilate?

What I don't understand is why we don't capitalize on the illegal alien problem. Let them work, tax their pay, and set up massive factories down south pumping out all the crap we currently outsource to China. We could have our very own foxconn right here in America. Set up rules where anyone can work their, but you can't get promoted past "assembly line worker" without a green card or natural US citizenship.

We wouldn't be sending billions to China, and it would save us a ton on shipping charges and engineering costs when you don't have to coordinate with someone half way across the globe.

there are parts in L.A. where english is not even needed. its more productive to speak korean/spanish than english to do business. within those communities english would be detrimental. Outside those communities is a different story.

Im guessing you've never had a customer get pissed at you because you don't understand them when they don't speak any English. If I were to move to Japan I damn sure would learn Japanese. They expect to live and work here then they damn well need to learn English.

And since illegal immigrants cause a financial burden in government services that they do not share in the cost of by paying taxes they ARE freeloaders. That is fact, not a perception. I've never heard anyone characterize them as lazy though.

yeah, I for one think Americans need to embrace some of the ideas that foreign cultures embrace. I'm speaking specifically of women driving. The Saudis got it right. Women shouldn't be allowed to drive. Also the Pakistani cultural tradition of dodging taxes might be a good one to look into too.

My girlfriend worked as a waitress in a sushi restaurant. They kept hiring Guatemalans for the kitchen with *very* few English skills. The owner, a Japanese woman, had a tenuous grasp of English to begin with, and her husband, the chef, had barely any English at all. Neither knew a word of Spanish.
It was odd to watch the multiple language barrier as both of these groups tried to use English to get the point across and a statement traveled through four different people.
My girlfriend is fluent in Spanish, and though that would be a boon. She was wrong. The owner treated it like an usurpation of power and the Guatemalans were saying some nasty shiat about how much they hated the owner. Hard to cover it up when the owner asked what they were saying, the owner thought the gf was keeping secrets and holding out for more money. Fired the gf to bring in a Japanese nephew.
As far as I know, there's still a bunch of Japanese people trying to figure out how to communicate with the Guatemalans with "Where's the bathroom?" level English.

It's Funny, I've been around Hispanics most of my life, they were my friends growing up and I've worked with hundreds in the Construction and Food service industries that I'm in, and I would have to say more that 90% of them spoke a little to fluent English but would never admit it, or just keep it to themselves. They sure do got a sense of humor, I'll give them that.

HarrisonBergeron: most of the time it's the menial or drone-like positions that get filled by cheaper labor. you, as an apparently "entitled" american, should be in a supervisory position or something. if you didn't get an education, don't have the work ethic, whatever it is, means you won't get paid $15/hr. for that job that an equally capable immigrant will do for $7.50.

I would like to add that most of the people I know who fit this description of entitlement to higher pay also shop at Wal-Mart, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Merchandise Outlet and any of the other places that sell the cheapest of cheap shiat from China. They don't realize that they're actually supporting the global business model that makes their jobs less and less valuable.
