I actually dont see a conflict on the signs in his case.

No standing or parking 7 -9:30 am & 4-6:30 pm M-F
No Parking 6:30 PM - 4 AM Daily
2 hour parking 9:30AM-4:30Pm M-Sat
2 hour parking 7AM-6:30PM M-Sat/No limit 6:30-10PM M-Sat
No Parking to the right in front of entrance

He got a ticket at 12:51 PM so unless he was parked there for more than 2 hours (which would have broken the understandable rule on 2 of the signs), or he parked in front of the entrance (which he probably didnt do or would have been towed) there was no reason for the ticket.

There was nothing saying that he could and couldnt park at that time.

swingerhead: There was nothing saying that he could and couldnt park at that time.

One sign says "No Parking" with an arrow to the right.

Another sign says "2 Hour Parking" with an arrow to the left & right.

Conflict.

Regardless, having five signs with different parking information on one pole is ridiculously stupid.

Unless your goal is to write as many tickets as possible for parking infractions, you make the signs clear, simple, and easily read.

With that said, they've got nothing on Richmond, VA.

In downtown Richmond, they had a private company doing parking enforcement. They'd find streets with lots of cars parked. They'd go around at 0630 and tie signs to trees on those streets saying "No parking after 0900". Then, they'd line up their meter maids and sit there waiting for 0900. Christ, how the money flowed.

That was about 7 years ago, so I have no idea how it is now.

2010-07-30 02:57:28 PM
Under the comments section of the ticket it says "Sign clearly visible. Sure. It's clearly visible, but it's not understandable."

Rose says the city needs to keep it simple.

ha, good luck with that. It is not in DC's interest to make things more convenient. They want that cash and you're going to give it to them. Go on and appeal. Try it.

The ticket says he parked illegally in a building entrance. Under the comments section of the ticket it says "Sign clearly visible. Sure. It's clearly visible, but it's not understandable."

Someone give him a second ticket for being a whiny biatch.

Or he could have just not parked there to be safe.

If you don't understand the rules, you probably shouldn't play the game. Especially when the game might cost you $50 if you break the rules. The rules you don't understand.

And I'm from the rez.
You see a white man's totem pole like that?
Dont' park there.
Don't hang out around there.
It's a bait for the cops.
Kind of like if you see an old lame goat tied up all alone at a water hole. Stay away.
You are in someone's sights if you go near it.
Go somewhere else.

csb:

one time i got a parking ticket for being within the legal distance from a stop sign. i decided to argue it. i took pictures of my vehicle, and for good measure, went around the corner and took a few snaps where i knew there were metered spaces within the legal distance of a stop sign.

i showed the pics to the judge, and he said he couldn't tell exactly how far i was. i said OK: check out these pics where it is clear the meters are well within the legal distance. i then asked if it was ok for the city to break the law as long as they made a buck. he told me he was only a contract judge and reduced the ticket to the court fee.

There's underground parking garages all over DC. Unless you're stepping out of your car for one hour or less, it's less frustrating/risky (but not cheaper unless you get a ticket) to just use the garage.

I had my car booted in college for parking in a handicap spot. The issue was that the "parking spot" was actually the size of three spots, and was not clearly lined. I parked in what should have physically been two spots away from the actual handicap spot. It was obvious that this was a trap, as there were two groups of other college students ahead of me in traffic court fighting the same exact situation. We all commiserated over this stupid situation while waiting for our cases to be called. Both groups ahead of me had their boot costs refunded and their tickets thrown out, which was the common sense verdict in this case.

My problem was that I decided to dress up nicely by wearing a suit (the other groups were dressed down) and take pictures and diagrams with me to show the judge. She was having none of it, and threw out my appeal. She even threatened me with contempt after I respectfully mentioned that I had discussed with the two prior groups that had their cases dismissed and that my case was EXACTLY like the other two. She of course disagreed for no reason.

That was the day I realized I did not trust the critical thinking skills of judges or anyone in authority.

/cool story bro

The signs I can't stand? The NO RIGHT TURN or DO NOT ENTER signs with tiny letters below that say (9:00am - 5:00pm, M-F).

You have to make that just as big as the main sign or I'll have to be right up on the sign to be able to read it, thereby slowing traffic.

If it was shopped it would be the correct color. The fact that it is the wrong color proves that it's not a shop. Unless the shopper knew that we would rule out a shop using this exact logic, in which case it is a shop and the shopper is quite devious. We need to determine if the shopper was devious.

Shoppers are most devious after their morning coffee, usually 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM Mondays through Fridays except Holidays.
Shop is legit if it was done at or after lunch, say 11:30 AM to 2 PM Mon - Fri except Holidays, or 12:30 PM to 3 PM Sat, Sun, and Hol. This applies to lunches 2 hours or less. Lunches greater than 2 hours are suspiciously long and therefore, punishable as devious shops. Shops 1:00 AM to 6:30 AM are devious on school days.

My favorite is when people decide to turn left at 3:58 p.m. when the NO LEFT TURN sign says (in those tiny letters) 4-6 p.m. Come on, if traffic is already backed up for rush hour at that time. Especially if you're parked there for five minutes waiting to turn and there's an alternate turn to get you where you want to go.

I live next to DC so I'm pretty much use to these signs. I've always said that you had to have a certain level of intellect or reading comprehension to be able to live here. That or our bureaucrats are a bunch of morons.

If someone was able to blow up the picture, I could gladly decipher the message that city government is trying to impose.

I have a rule when parking: When signs conflict, don't park there.

Walk to the corner in both directions. Read *ALL* signs. Look for signs high up on street light poles and anywhere else one might fit. Any confusion or conflict, park somewhere else. Failure to do this will eventually result in a ticket.

One more reason to not have the private sector do it.
