The Exorcist is overrated?

Who writes this crap?

2010-07-29 10:59:34 PM
The Wizard of Oz overrated???

2010-07-29 11:02:58 PM
Their reasons for these movies being overrated are less than illuminating.

"I LOATHE Close Encounters. It is the WORST. It makes me want to scratch my eyeballs out of my head. Ugh! - lettergirl

Really?

2010-07-29 11:03:48 PM
2001??? Citizen Kane?? I know both movies has its detractors, but overrated? I can't count the number of times of seen each movie, but they are still great.

2010-07-29 11:04:35 PM
That is a list full of derp.

2010-07-29 11:07:31 PM
-1

Most of those movies are UNDERRATED.

Annie Hall is hysterical. End of discussion.

His Girl Friday? Citizen Kane? Are you farking nuts?

Worst list ever!

2010-07-29 11:12:28 PM
It's shiat like this that makes me glad I canceled my subscription.

Gwendolyn: That is a list full of derp.

Agreed. I cannot believe that they consider "Forrest Gump", "Citizen Kane", "The Exorcist" (which still scares me after all these years), "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", "Singin' in the Rain", and "To Kill a Mockingbird" are on the list.

2010-07-29 11:14:22 PM
Lawrence of Arabia? Come on. Amazing film.

But, I guess if you have the intellectual prowess of a 7 year old, many of these films would seem, well, boring.

2010-07-29 11:14:28 PM
Oh, and their website sucks balls.

It's not Twilight, therefore it is crap!

This.

The Sound of Music?!?! Even if you don't like schmaltzy musicals with predictable plotlines, it's a wonderful story and a great movie.

His Girl Friday, An Affair to Remember, Gone With the Wind, Citizen Kane...you have to wonder if this list wasn't made specifically so it would be linked somewhere like FARK.

2010-07-29 11:17:03 PM
I agree with Gump. But the rest are good movies.

tudorgurl: It's not Twilight, therefore it is crap!

It's Entertainment Weekly. If they can't fellate Joss Whedon or the Sex & the City franchise creators, they can't think positively about something.

People trying to get a reaction.

EW be trollin.

-1, people.

It's only at -4 at the moment.

I also give credibility to a newspaper editor's endorsements of political candidates.

2010-07-29 11:20:03 PM
what. the. fark?

was this written by 12-year-olds? Lawrence of Arabia - i fell asleep! hurrrr!

2010-07-29 11:20:47 PM
Well, I can at least see the angle they're coming from. Some of the movies on the list are seen as significant because they were ahead of their time -- if you took the films out of their historical context and looked at them solely based on their content, they really aren't all that special anymore. Citizen Kane was groundbreaking in its day, but were it to have been made today it certainly wouldn't go down in history as a classic film.

Of course, that raises the whole question of how art should be judged; there's a good case to be made that it's not at all fair to try to judge a work of art without considering the historical context of the work.

2010-07-29 11:21:14 PM
That list was pretty off. They probably have 16 Candles in the top 5 movies of all time as well.

Breakfast at Tiffany's may not be all that great, but Hepburn is hot enough to fark in that one.

2010-07-29 11:21:16 PM
The Wizard of Oz?
Close Encounters of the Third Kind?

I love those movies :/

2010-07-29 11:22:27 PM
Lawrence of Arabia is one of the best films ever.

2010-07-29 11:23:07 PM
dark side of the moon: The Wizard of Oz?

Yeah, I saw that on the list after I posted, and my synapses took a minute to start firing again. Seriously, WHO would say The Wizard of Oz is not a great classic movie??

2010-07-29 11:23:39 PM
Sweet mother of god.

I don't even like 2001: A Space Odyssey, but I think it's amazingly well made and races many, many interesting questions.

His Girl Friday? Forrest Gump? Citizen Kane? Wizard of Oz?

Who are these farktards and why are they watching MY GOD DAMN CINEMA?

2010-07-29 11:25:38 PM
Thank you for linking to a slideshow of this werpaderpderp, subby. You can go to hell, too. :p

Seriously, this is a terrible list. Considering that none of the movies that I have seen deserve to be on it, I'll bet that the movies I haven't seen also don't deserve to be on it.

EW.com be trollin'?

2010-07-29 11:27:25 PM
*raises

Furthermore, why are we giving traffic to this "article" -- it's a slide show of movies with a few comments underneath by random people I don't know. This isn't even one of those things where you can simply "disagree" with it -- this list/article is just farking retarded. Someone else said EW is trolling -- I'm almost inclined to agree.

2010-07-29 11:27:53 PM
RobertBruce: I agree with Gump. But the rest are good movies.

seconded. even if you take Pulp Fiction off the table for the 94 Best Picture Oscar, how the fark can you honestly say that Gump is a better movie than motherfarking Shawshank?

There is Fark Politics Tab Derp, and then there's EW Derp. At least with Fark Politics Tab Derp you figure 7 out of the 10 derpers don't really believe what they say.

Think of the intelligence of the average American. Remember that half of all Americans are dumber than that. Sarah Palin's approval rating is 29%. Yes, it is possible this link is serious.

This article does bring up a good question though -- what films can you legitimately call overrated (whether they are or not)? I think a prime example of such is Crash (2004). It was a very mediocre, melodramatic film that had a tried and true message in it. The acting, the dialogue, the plot -- none of it was "grand." Yet it won an Oscar for Best Picture.

Wizard of Oz (1939) on the other hand is the most highly referenced movie ever made, if IMDb is any source on the matter. It has more movie connections than any other film. Its influence is incredible -- from the technology behind it (such as the design of the tornado), to the use of technicolor. It would play once every Thanksgiving on television for decades, something people would come to look forward to.

You can't call a film "overrated" on the basis that you don't "enjoy" it for reasons that aren't objective. For instance, one could have a useless debate on whether or not Citizen Kane tells a good story -- because that's subjective. But whether or not Citizen Kane inspired other people, other films, inspired camera shots -- those things are objective. In other words, a film's lasting impact, its legacy, is objective. It can be "measured" in a sense.

To dismiss such films then that have those legacies as being overrated, that speaks volumes on a person's view of cinema. If I met someone who actually agreed with this list, I'd probably never speak to them again, because I would assume they are just retarded.

Meh on Exorcist (but then it's a horror movie,) but they need a cockpunch for Forrest Gump.

Barakku: Meh on Exorcist (but then it's a horror movie,) but they need a cockpunch for Forrest Gump.

lol. i feel the opposite. the exorcist is one of the best films of the 70s. it's still shocking even today (and probably wouldn't get made today. can you imagine the furor from the crucifix scene?). forrest gump, however, is an appallingly schmaltzy bit of faux mythology.

2010-07-29 11:41:44 PM
Breakfast at Tiffany's was farking boring. Moon River is a crappy song.

North by Northwest was also pretty lame.

The Best Picture is overrated every other year. The kind of films that get nominated are mostly pretentious crap.

No, they just made a slideshow of movies that regular users think are overrated. These are the same users who think that [insert bad movie title here] is the greatest film ever made.

MeinRS6: They probably have 16 Candles in the top 5 movies of all time as well.

I'd really like to see their top twenty list. Probably includes Cocktail, Battlefield Earth and The Giant Spider Invasion.

I can concede that Forrest Gump is a baby boomer spankoff festival, but it was still a pretty damned good flick regardless.

And there are so many cock/coont punches due for the imbeciles in that article. Some people should just stop watching movies completely.
