I suggest renaming the team "The Fightin' Christs".

2010-07-29 08:19:12 PM
I went to 3 high schools: 3 politically incorrect nicknames

the Vikings
the Warriors
the Black Knights

The Black Knights was an inner city school. At the time I did not think it was a big deal, but apparantly some people do. I think they are changing the name.

DEICIDAL MANIACS!

I didn't realize his son was required to go to Football games. Also, he's more worried about a name than about the violence of the game?

/I personally don't think it's that violent.
//I'm not a preacher, scared by a word.

"I love God to death."

A local middle school in my town was forced to drop the mascot "the Angels" because someone complained it was too religious

the Black Knights

Actually a group of poor, patronless knights, not African ones. They had their armor anodized black because they couldn't afford to take care of it or hire a squire to do it

I've always been on the edge with things like this. On one hand, you're only saying something in jest (in this case, "Go Demons"), and on the other hand, as a Christian, I always want to be aware of how I am presenting myself. Are the words I'm saying glorifying God, or are they things that maybe I don't need to say? It's so easy to find yourself pushing the boundaries a little more. That's what makes things like Halloween really tricky, because although it's supposed to be a fun time, you're also worshiping demons, ghosts, and witches. That's not Christ-like. This guy is looking out for his son, so I commend him on that, because his son might not recognize it as harmful.

FTFY.

also, 8/10. the quality hasn't dropped, but you're getting too well known, and you really should consider mixing it up with an extra dose of derp.

"A demon never has a good connotation. Never," Crosby told the Macon TV station. "If you look it up in Webster's Dictionary, there's nothing good about a demon."

Actually, this is not true. In old English, a "demon" just meant a spirit person, whether good or ill. Muses, brownies, faeries, etc. were all "demons". This is the origin of our English words "demonstrate", "democracy", and several others.

They should go for the Christian approach and change their mascot to a zombie. GO ZOMBIES!

Demonstrate? Democracy? Buh? Demonstrate comes from de-monstrare (to show), which derives from monstrum (portent), Latin. Democracy from demos (common people) and kratos (rule), Greek. Neither come from Demon. You are at least right about what Demon originally meant though.

You sure about that?

demonstrate: from de- "entirely" + monstrare "to point out, show," from monstrum "divine omen, wonder"
democracy: from demos "common people," originally "district"+ kratos "rule, strength"

Etymology kicks ass.

I've seen a few old classmates laughing about this on Facebook. (Graduated from WRHS in '87.) The mascot's been a demon for decades -- what's the occult statute of limitations on how long people can chant "GO DEMONS" before hell breaks loose?

My H.S. mascot/team name was the Titans. This guy would probably object to that as well because the kids would be shouting about deities from Greek mythology. Maybe not.

In any event, if Demons has been the school's mascot/team name since 1946, I believe hell will freeze over before they change it. Pass the potatoes, pastor, and let's change the subject.

Of course if this was a movie, it would turn out that the Warner Robins High School is in fact a Satanist Cult, and the Pastor and his family are next in line to be a blood sacrifice.

I agree wholeheartedly that you have the absolute right to practice your religion whatever it might be.

Right up to the point where it affects another person's life. Whether that be anywhere in the range between murdering them because they have different beliefs or trying to change the school mascot.

Nobody is trying to stop you from practicing your religion. Nobody cares if you are offended. Mind your own business and STFU.

/Also applies to many other groups with fanatical members

Huh, I seem to be wrong. But I seem to remember an old history article by Issac Asimov mentioning the prefix "demon-" meaning 'knowledge'; same place I learned about the rest of that Olde English folktalery. *scratches head* Huh.

Food for thought:

it's been a while since I've seen that episode, but I recall an overhead shot of Homer taking long strides through the desert, and it subsequently being removed from the scene where he's tripping on the insanity peppers.

anyone?
