Hi everyone.

My fiancee and I adopted 2 kittens recently. They are mostly balls of 100% pure energy.

This is Lightning, he's 3 months old. He can move very fast, faster than I've seen any other cat move. He can also catch flies (and eat them....) :

i291.photobucket.com

And this little cutie is Max, he's 2 months old. He can get into any space, and we jokingly call him our "little duster". He does not like vacuums:

One more quick genetics tidbit:

A two color girl can be a SOLID two color girl where the colors are sprinkled throughout her coat. She is a TORTOISESHELL.

A two color girl can be a TABBY two color girl where the colors are sprinkled throughout her coat AND STRIPED (Mackeral) or SWIRLED (Classic). She is a TORTOISESHELL TABBY... often called a TORBIE (condensation of TORTIE-TABBY).

A two color girl can be a SOLID two color girl WITH WHITE, where the "with white" gene forces the red and black colors to stayed corraled together, thus giving clean red and black spots. She is a CALICO.

A two color girl can be a TABBY two color girl WITH WHITE, where the "with white" gene forces the red and black colors to stayed corraled together, and the tabby pattern stripes or swirls the color within the red and black patches. She is a PATCHED TABBY.

If you add the dilute gene to this recipe, you get:
Dilute tortoiseshell AKA blue tortie
Dilute blue tortie tabby AKA blue torbie
Dilute Calico (I have one!)
Blue Patched tabby

Quiz next week... bring #2 pencil.

DesertZephyr: oddmind: DesertZephyr: There are two color genes - RED and BLACK. WHITE is NOT a color but a gene that REMOVES color.

I bow to your mastery over cat genetics!

And I curtsey in return...10 years breeding Maine Coons gave me a pretty solid footing in traditonal cat color genetics...the mega recessives still mess with me...to have a lllac pointed Himalayan, you need FIVE sets of reinforced recessive genes:
Longhair, Point, Solid, Black, and Lilac...

I've seen pics of cats on here that are genetic marvels without their owners knowing it... is pretty cool when Mother Natures gets out her BIG box of crayons!!!

Oh I love the genetic marvels, the more unusual the better. What I've always wanted to find is a blue eyed black cat. Never seen one in real life.

I also love Maine Coon cats, I have a Maine Coon mix now who's a huge goofy boy, at the age of five still thinks he's a kitten.

You forgot blue/cream!

Torties have always been my favs. I've had a variety of torties and torbies of unusual coloration. I had a beautiful red tortie Persian when I was younger and a smoke tortie that was mostly black. Now we have a orange torbie and white, black tortie with a few splotches of orange, a dilute tortie, a blue/cream polydactl, two medium hair tortie kittens. We have a "silver classic torbie" with white too.

Most people I run into think the torties are calicos.

What color would you say this one is?

Amazing!... I 'saw' the *you know you want to* photo as a full page glossy magazine AD for Fat Squirrel beer. Heck, you could put limberger cheese in the paws and I might think of getting some. (Jess 'cuz I never have) Very inviting "ad". Vivid coloring. Nice font. Seductive fade. Quite nice.

I call the blue/creams blue tortiea...like in the toroiseshell, the red(cream) color is implied.

Your girls is a cutie, that's what I call her!!

She is a brown(black) patched tabby with white. Even though the white is low it still forced her brown (black) and red patches to "congeal" as opposed to having the two color sprinkled together.

My dilute calico girl is called "Bug", as in "Cute as a...." Her registered name is TabbyTown's Firefly. What else would you expect from a Sci-Fi geekette mom??

You mean like Rigby, shown her with her ordinary grey/white littermate? I confess that I didn't know what she was when I picked her. The rest of the litter was solid grey. I picked her brother because of his cute toes, and her because she was "different." It took me months to figure out that she was Lilac. I'd heard of it, but never seen it, and thought it only came as "Lilac Point."

Happy Caturday! Special thanks to Spinach Gunk, Lar Jorgen and QJ for cleaning up my new kid's pic last week. New Kid is a girl, her official name is Ollie O (O is for my government last name) but if you ask jaynleng, her name is Corm. She passed her FIV/leukemia test. The vet found 5 ticks on her and she had worms. Once the worms are cleared up, she will meet her big brother and big sister. I anticipate a lot of hissing. I have some new pics to upload. Catching up on the thread now.

I'll leave this in the meantime. Mr. Fia and I found them when we were weeding our garden.

A week or two ago I was scrolling through Caturday when my husband caught a glimpse of Lucy and said "Whoa! What kind of cat is THAT?" After having a good look at her photo, he concluded that she looks like "three cats in one".

farm5.static.flickr.com

Maybe I'm a bad kitteh mom, but I just figured Lars was a common barn kitteh. Lucy I wasn't sure of. I have no clue what breeds they are, but they both have neat coloring and goofy personalities :) Oh, as an update, Lucy's tummy has been fine since last week, so it must have been just a tummy bug.

This is the best pic I have right now to show Lar's interesting stripes - there's the sideways ones and then the black skunk stripe down his back. His "solid" fur is a mix of colors when you get him in better lighting. Does that make him a specific type of tabby?

farm3.static.flickr.com

Here's a close-up of Lucy's ear tufts:

farm5.static.flickr.com

Until you get her under good lighting, she looks like a typical long-haired grey & white fuzzy... but when you get her under a light, you can see that each strand of fuzz is banded (like my fur! In humans it's apparently very rare. Not sure about in kittehs. I know there's a name for the condition/genetics related to it, but can't find it. I first heard about others having it when watching Forensic Files a few years ago...) Anyway... any help with my cats' genetics? Thanks!!

2010-07-30 08:44:20 PM
Lars is a mackeral tabby...and the spine stripe is part of that pattern.

Anybody have a cat with a "butterfly" pattern across it's shoulder girdle? That's characteristic of the classic tabby.

When the individual hairs are banded, that the ticked tabby pattern rearing it's head... she may be carrying a single copy of the gene as a recessive.

Thanks DZ! It's fun to know more about my critters. I have to go back up and read about how common that pattern is for Lars. The future Mr. thinks Lucy and I get along well because we both have the banded hair look going on :) Our Lucy doesn't like many people, including his daughter. She'll tolerate other people, but she seems to actually LIKE me for some reason.
