So he was 90 when he died.. that seems pretty average to me...

That was the best article I have seen in a while.

everything gets weird in japan...

So when this guy died at about 71, his family's first thoughts were "let's not give him a dignified burial, but instead sit on his corpse for the next thirty plus years until he stands a chance of becoming the nation's oldest man"?

Erm? Try again?

So if he didn't die of old age I wonder what killed him? It is a great way to do a murder...how can it be murder if nobody knows you are dead?

2010-07-29 07:07:12 PM
111 - 30 =/= 90

2010-07-29 07:07:40 PM
81, even.

Well, Step 3 of any plan is profit.

More like "let's sit on his corpse and milk his pension payments as long as we can".

Probably, "we need his pension checks, so let's not tell anyone" and it eventually became that he's Japan's oldest man. It's a lie you can't really dig your way out of, unless you just bury the body somewhere and claim he wandered off.

"His family must have known he has been dead all these years and acted as if nothing happened. It's so eerie," said Yutaka Muroi, a Tokyo metropolitan welfare official.

By this I'm to understand that welfare cheats are not common in Japan? Or is it that officials don't expect it to last for so long?

Didnt read the article, but my guess... Japanese officials went to the home of an 111 year old man. When they rang the doorbell, he came out with a samurai sword and began attacking them. "You'll never take me alive!" They laugh at him and say "The war is over Mr Yamaji!" They sit down and have some tea.

Mr Kato's relatives told police that he had "confined himself in his room more than 30 years ago and became a living Buddha," according to a report by Jiji Press.

Ooooh... bring religion into it. NICE SAVE!
I don't know about "living Buddha", but a naturally mummified corpse could indeed be seen as sacred (and still living, in a sense) in Buddhism.

It would have been better if the family said, "Yes, we're sorry, he's been dead for 30 years," and the bewildered officials packed up and started to leave...

...and then from the back bedroom comes a hoarse whisper: "I'm not dead yet..."

Yes but using a mummified corpse to collect a pension check would not be looked apon as sacred.

This might be passable for weird here in America, however in Japan this is probably the norm.

/Actually afraid to see what weird is in Japan.
//Probably involves animals.

Why not secretly bury him then get an older realtive to impersonate him.

Seriously, can you tell the difference between 85 and 110? I sure as heck can't.
