WikiLeaks = Ultra Attention Whores

2010-07-29 02:53:11 PM
i'm still waiting for them to leak all those classified documents from Iran, Cuba and China. After all, the world would benefit from transparency from those countries too, right? Oh wait, no just documents that make America look bad.

while true, in a war bad things happen. that is why it is called a war. it does seem that wikileaks has no problem with what is happening in china or iran. they have no particular zeal to expose those countries for who they really are.

Heaven forbid an american start a website devoted to freedom of information focus his own country. There is nothing wrong with focusing on america, if they even do.

It could also be that in america we don't execute people who speak out against the government, while in China and Iran, you will disappear forever for speaking ill of great leader.

You'd only make the lions sick. Just throw them on a cross, they're already up on one metaphorically.

I watched an interview with the douche bag the other morning. The guy is a clueless ass clown.

When asked about whether his posting of the stolen documents, some of which reveal the names of individuals providing intel on the Taliban, might endanger the lives of civilians in Afghanistan he had the balls to blame the military for 'misclassifying' some of the documents.

Because I'm sure he knows exactly how each document's classifications is derived.

As it has already been pointed out, they do host documents from other places.

Additionally, wikileaks relies on, amazingly enough, leaks. If people from those countries aren't contributing, what are the people in charge of wikileaks supposed to do?

I hear that Freedom of information requests work really well in Communist dictatorships. Wikileaks should just ask them for their secret documents.

I'm glad you know what you're talking about there dude.

Julian Paul Assange (pronounced /əˈsɑːnʒ/; born 1971) is an Australian internet activist and journalist best known for his involvement with Wikileaks, a whistleblower website.

Two things:

1) Ask Men is part of the Rupert Murdoch empire.
2) The journalists killed in Iraq worked for Reuters, not the Associated Press.

I think he was referring to these tags:

Additionally, wouldn't it make sense for the person who leaked the docs to tell wikileaks how to interpret them?

1. No duh

2. And this is pertinent how?

3. Are you on teh Internets? Guess what. You're "sharing a server" with Pirate Bay.

4. uh, is this a plus, a minus, or both, or neither?

5. Why didn't you put this one first, so I could get a good laugh and not waste any more time on AskMen?

Point still stands. Heaven forbid Americans have access to transparency in the government/military they are paying 10 times over for.

i dont know what the fuss is about

the people that dont care wont read it (american idols)

the people that care but are partisan wont change

the people that live in pak already know about it

hmmmm the only people that might be upset would be those asshats that think that war is a sport, to be cheered at. And only played for mom, and pie rewards. Hmmmmm Pie

When you're stealing gigabytes worth of tiny files from a secret computer, you probably aren't doing the prep work needed to explain everything on there. You're just going elbow-deep in the candy jar while everyone's backs are turned, filling your pockets, and hauling ass.

This "scandal" is basically just further proof that while we love our ultra-violent entertainment, we as a culture are so padded, protected, and coddled that we simply cannot deal with the ugly realities of war.

netweavr: Um, if they were functionally transparent they would be unable to protect the anonymity of their sources....

Ashelth's step by step guide to releasing documents anonymously online:

1) Buy a used $200 netbook for cash from a private person
2) Copy docs to netbook
3) Go to a free wifi hotspot and torrent the files for a few hours
4) Wipe netbook for prints
5) Leave netbook in the front yard of a frat house or leave it in a bad neighborhood

Or

Burn docs to a dvd and mail it to multiple news agencies, they'll host it for you.

That Brad dude does deserve to be tried and given the sentence he deserves. Death maybe, I dont know. The Wikileaks guy is a DB but I dont think he did anything that we can justify killing him over. I wouldnt feel bad if he died.

David should never play by Goliath's rules...so no, Wikileaks will never be 'transparent'. It has no obligation to be so anyway, and its secrecy is key to its continued success.

Funny how askmen.com is a tool of Rupert Murdoch, but that isn't exactly spelled out in their splash page, eh?

Not to defend WikiLeaks bashers, but almost all of the documents in the "Cuba" section are about Guantanamo, and most of the rest are plain ol' CRS articles. There aren't any government documents actually from Cuba in there.

2010-07-29 03:36:17 PM
wikiLeaks credibility went down the drain about the time Colbert dumped on Julian for editing videos and basically made Julian look like an ass.

As for the CIA hit squad on Julian, let me channel Chris Rock here. I'm not saying I'd do it, but I understand.

2010-07-29 03:36:58 PM
I don't see anything wrong with what Wikileaks did-- we're never going to defeat* Afghanistan or Al Quaeda. They could leak a million documents and never change THAT outcome. We need MORE leaks, from America's screw-ups to the tiniest country's foibles. The really important things going on are so secret that we'll never know, anyhow.

/adjusts tin-foil hat

* There is no defeat in modern war, just humiliation at the hands of the mass media until something else gets everyone's attention.

We (the American populace) already know TONS of things that it's illegal for the Chinese, Iranian, and Cuban media to report about in those countries. Our media does a pretty good job of reporting the misdeeds of those nations.

2010-07-29 03:39:09 PM
If Wikileaks hadn't published those documents, we would have won the war in Afghanistan years ago.

2010-07-29 03:39:29 PM
They release details of Afgans that cooperated with US forces without regard to thier saftey and now their worried about protecting thier sources? How about protecting somebody on our side for a change. Idiots.

Are you suggesting that the folks at wikileaks are hoarding internal documents from Cuba in order to protect the good name of the government there?

1 accurate statement (wikiLeaks is not a wiki) and 4 insinuations and whines.

Fantastic.

which is exactly why we should focus on them and why focusing on the US feels more like self-immolation. Iran is so evil, we fear for our lives to go after them, so even though America is great and free and everything, let's take her down anyways because she won't do anything.

yeahhhhh
